God's chosen people is Israel. Israel was disobedient, and God cut them off in many ways-the exile to Assyria of the ten tribes, and the exile to Babylon of Judah. The picture here is of Israel, as an oak tree that has been cut off. The stump, which includes the root, the lifegiving portion of the tree, is what is left of Israel after God has purified it. | ||||||
