Dear acdaniel55, Welcome to the forum! Anxiety is not inherently sinful. On the contrary, it is a blessing. Imagine how poorly we would care for our families, were it not for our continuing concern for their well-being. Paul even tells us that if a person will not work, they should not eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10). Thus, the stress of hunger will properly drive a person away from being slothful. The problem is that the world says that no one ought to suffer. The reality, from a Biblical perspective, is that suffering often has many benefits. Our emotions are often a good indicator of issues that need our attention. When we feel fear, it tells us that we are not rightly trusting God. When we feel guilt, it tells us that there is sin that must be excised. When we feel discouragement, it tells us that we are thinking too much about ourselves. Etc. I would say that the real problem with any emotion is a failure to rightly discern its cause, and to take appropriate action. When that happens, then it can be sinful. All emotions should, ultimately, drive us toward the God in the Word. Nevertheless, perhaps this might be helpful, from the book "Running Scared: Fear, Worry and the Rest of God." "At this point, we know that worry and fear are more about us than about the things outside us. They reveal what is valuable to us, and what is valuable to us in turn reveals our kingdom allegiances. We also know that God is patient and compassionate with us, and he gives grace upon grace. Though alert to our divided allegiances, He persists in calling us away from fear and worry, persuades us of the beauty of the kingdom, and gives more than we can imagine. "With this in mind, his words should sound attractive, and we should be more and more inclined to listen. We should still like to abolish anxieties quickly, but we are learning that God values strong foundations and gradual growth, and such foundations are established as we feed on Him and His words. As we meditate on Scripture and make it our own, we should anticipate slow but steady change. Worriers should be experts in a handful of passages." --Edward T. Welch In Him, Doc |
