1 | Is tithe 3.33 or ten percent? | Prov 3:9 | T'oma | 142532
Don't forget - the tithe was always based upon the INCREASE. If one planted 10 bushels of wheat seed and the harvest yielded 100 bushels, the “increase” would be 90 bushels, so the tithe would 9 bushels of wheat. In today’s world, if you make 50,000 a year and it costs you ex-amount of dollars to yield that 50,000, (say, for instance, you MUST wear dress clothes in your job) the cost of buying and upkeeping them, the costs of transportation, etc. And don't forget income taxes, etc. are part of the "costs" that effect the increase. The difference is the increase and that is what you figure the tithe from. Anything over and above that amount is an “offering”. One verse, concerning tithing (each year), that is frequently ignored, is Deuteronomy 14:22ff. Today, that is God’s means of offering everyone the opportunity to "save up for whatever their hearts desire". T’oma |

2 | ten percent once every three years? | Prov 3:9 | greentwiga | 142537
You are right, it is ten percent of the increase. In The Deut 14:22 verse you quoted it says in 2 years out of three, the person who offered the tithe ate it. Only one year out of three did thay give it away. Then they gave it to the poor, widows, aliens, and some to the levites. Am I reading that right? Is there some other verse that says we are to give ten percent each year and all of it to the church or religious authorities?
3 | ten percent once every three years? | Prov 3:9 | T'oma | 142542
To answer your question, "Is there some other verse that says we are to give ten percent each year and all of it to the church or religious authorities?" - NO. Remember the story of the widow's mite? Jesus was hanging around the temple treasury and He watched this widow drop in a couple of coins. The "temple treasury" is interesting. The 13 different "trumpets" for receiving money allowed people to decide for themselves where the money was going to go. It was centuries after Christ that "offering plates" were passed around for "tithes" to support the work of the church. T'oma |

4 | ten percent once every three years? | Prov 3:9 | greentwiga | 142546
Interesting. The average giving is 3.33 percent (10 percent once every three years.) and maybe 2 percent goes to the church. Hmmm. Thanks
5 | ten percent once every three years? | Prov 3:9 | Searcher56 | 142548
The average OT tithe was 22 percent per year .... There were three OT tithes 1) The general tithe paid to the Levites (Num 18:21), who even tithed to the preists (vs 26). 2) The sacred meal tithe, eaten before the Lord (Deu 12:6,7,17-19; 14:22-27) 3) The tri-annual tithe to the poor (Deu 14:28-29, 26:12-15) So that was 19 percent per year for two years and 27 percent every three years, average 22 percent. |
