1 | To seek God must we also seek ourselves? | Prov 3:5 | DocTrinsograce | 155521
Dear Ngkh... It is good to see you posting again! I often think of you and the many other believers around the world. We generally have so little contact, yet we are united through Christ and by His Spirit! What Hughs is trying to say is two fold: First, most theological errors are rooted in a misunderstanding of who God is and a misunderstanding of who man is. Consequently, its important that we learn both! The former discipline is called theology proper, the latter is called theological anthropology. Now, certainly, the most blessed of these is the study of the attributes of God. The more we know Him, the more the brightness of His glory "rubs off" on us. Second, as we have discussed in the forum before, we are in the process of progressive sanctification. We are growing in holiness, obedience, and Christ-likeness. In order to do these things, we must thoroughly understand ourselves. Remember, the study of the Word is looking into a mirror. It helps us see our imperfections which we'd ignore in ignorance if they weren't visible. Also, each time I fail, I must study what took place. By understanding what happened, I can seek to eliminate that wickedness from my life, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Remember, when God created man He said it was good! God is now in the business of restoring what was lost in the fall. As believers, He has graciously made us part of that process. If it was important enough for Him to give a clear explanation of man in Scripture, then it is important for us to learn! :-) In Him, Doc |

2 | Thank you, Doc | Prov 3:5 | ngkh | 155553
Thank you, Doc for your thoughts and your explanation. Never did I thought the way you did. Perhaps I had been wrong all this while for in the past 2 over years, I never did once try to understand myself. It was always the Word and after I went thru Romans thru Hebrews, I believed that my old self should have died with Christ and my new is being crafted by our Lord in his own ways and time. That's how I see it in my growth. He had always eqquipped me with brothers and sisters like yourself to guide me. I have always relied on Him to move me and I can feel that I am moving. I do confess however that it makes me arrogant and prideful at times and God do rebuke with scriptures to tow me back to line. It is ironic that before my rebirth, I was always fighting the Word, looking for contradictions and doubts with my carnal mind but then God convicted me via the Word and now I am fighting for the Word telling others not to use their carnal mind to understand God's will which includes understanding ourselves and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us or take charge as we go along. Just seek, obey and receive, I believe. Isaiah 55:8-9 8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. 9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Thus, if I try to understand ourselves, I might understand wrongly. After all I am still human and might follow on the wrong path cos I cannot determine if what my thoughts is God's will. I am still very much how people would say "heart hardened" about how I feel. I would need time to digest what you wrote and am very thankful for your thoughts. Perhaps, if its not too much trouble, I would appreciate your prayer to allow me to see the light. God Bless ps. Incidently, I do read the postings almost everyday. Just that I felt a bit inadequate to contribute. |

3 | Thank you, Doc | Prov 3:5 | DocTrinsograce | 155556
Dear ngkh, We all struggle with pride. But we have the Holy Spirit to help us. It helps to remember that any victory we have in life belongs to the Lord. In fact, a pastor once told me when I was rejoicing in victory over sin, "Do not rejoice over victory, instead be grateful for forgiveness." It took me a while to understand. One focuses on me, the other focuses on God. Please do not misunderstand what I have said, sir. I am not talking about being self absorbed. I am talking about wisdom from the Word. Recently I read where a theologian wrote, "Man was never created to be autonomous, but dependent on God." Every moment, every day, in every thought, in every deed, we must be dependent on our Lord. It is not about a lot of things to do or not do, it about a relationship, a deeply loving relationship. Also, keep in mind that God has created us with faculties. Those include spiritual, cognitive, and emotive faculties. We are to worship Him in ALL of these things. Do not imagine that it is improper to reason and think deeply. On the contrary, we were created to think. (False religions try to argue otherwise, but Christianity does not do this!) However, our minds are to be renewed by the Word. Reason, think deeply, meditate, contemplate, consider, deliberate, discuss, contend, delight, desire, and love the Word. (Sorry, poor English, but perhaps you get my point.) All that we are has be effected by sin, and we must always remember that... but all that we are is also what God has created. Again, I emphasize this important fact: If God has taken the time to speak to us about a thing, than we must and should take time to study it. But our study should always be in the light of the Word, depending on God's Holy Spirit to guide our understanding. Also, don't hesitate to contribute on the forum, sir. Frankly, we need your thoughts and insights. We are a people dominated by Euro-American thinking. Sometimes we mistake this for Scriptural truth. I have found that often my foreign friends see things that we miss. God has given us these great gifts to help us: Regeneration, the Word, the Holy Spirit, and one another. We need ALL of these to walk as we should. In Him, Doc |
