AUTOSOTERISM is the doctrine that each human being has the power to merit salvation by stint of effort, works, practice, or penance. A few advocates include: Pelagius, John Cassian, Faustus of Riez, Desiderius Erasmus, Hans Kung, Jeffrey L. Morrow. SYNERGISM is the doctrine that there are two efficient agents in regeneration, namely the human will and the Holy Spirit, which, in the strict sense of the term, cooperate. This theory accordingly holds that the soul has not lost in the fall all inclination toward holiness, nor all power to seek for it under the influence of ordinary motives.* A few advocates include: Jacob Harmensen, Hugo Grotius, John Wesley, Charles Finney, Clark Pinnock, North Whitehead, Kenneth Copeland, Oral Roberts, Robert Schuller. MONERGISM is the doctrine that the Holy Spirit is the only efficient agent in regeneration -- that the human will possesses no inclination to holiness until regenerated, and therefore cannot cooperate in regeneration.* A few advocates include: Augustine, John Chrysostom, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Thomas Manton, Charles Spurgeon, Martyn-Lloyd Jones, R. C. Sproul, John MacArthur. *These definitions are from the Century Dictionary. |

If the sinful man cannot respond to God's calling unless the Holy Spirit regenerates him then the opposite must also be true. A sinless man cannot sin unless he is un-generated by the Holy Spirit, namely Adam. For it must then also be true that Adam was unable to sin by himself. Therefore God made him sin, because Adam had no sinful nature in him until after the disobedience. eklektos I hope and pray that everyone knows that there are only two religions in the world, God's and Satan's. |

Dear Eklektos, Not quite. When comparing the moral abilities and inclination of man there are three states: (1) The State of Innocency (Pre-Fall) (2) The State of Bondage (Post-Fall) (3) The State of Grace (Regenerate Man) (4) The State of Glory (In the Presence of God) Man's moral ability and his inclination to good and evil vary depending on his particular state. These observations are part of a branch of theology called anthropology. They are called the fourfold state of man. Augustine was the first to articulate these Scriptural distinctions. You can use Google to find much discussion of them. Wading through Augustine's Enchiridion, however, takes quite a bit of effort. In Him, Doc |

Doctrinograce, Not true. When comparing the moral state of man there are only two, sinless and sinful. Can you give me an example of each of the fourfold states of man with Scripture since you brought it up? (1) The State of Innocency (Pre-Fall) - sinless (2) The State of Bondage (Post-Fall) - sinful (3) The State of Grace (Regenerate Man) - sinless (4) The State of Glory (In the Presence of God) - sinless And, no we can't change the subject. The Scriptures are worthy for instruction. eklektos |

Dear Eklektos, Change the subject? Has anyone told you you are difficult to follow, my dear fellow? You wrote, "Can you give me an example of each of the fourfold states of man with Scripture since you brought it up?" Yes, I can... and, although you didn't ask, I will. :-) (1) The State of Innocency (Genesis 1:27 through 3:6a) (2) The State of Bondage (Genesis 3:6b Revelation 21:9) (3) The State of Grace (Genesis 3:15 (protoevangelium) through Revelation 21:9) (4) The State of Glory (Revelation 21:10 through eternity) Again, I'd urge you to study up on the subject. Much more has been discussed from the Scriptures by the men gifted to the church by Christ. Much more than I can convey in short little posts. Thank you! In Him, Doc |
