1 | Not about gambling: about God's will. | Prov 16:33 | 46102
This verse isn't about gambling, I don't believe. Consider the following commentary quoted from Zondervan's NIV "Life Application Sutdy Bible." "The lot was almost always used in ceremonial settings and was the common method for determining God's will. Several important events occurred by lot, including the identification of Achan as the man who had sinned (Joshua 7:14), the division of the promised land among the tribes (Joshua 14:2), and the selection of the first king for the nation (1 Samuel 10:16-26)." I'm also thinking about what we read in the Amplified: "...the decision is wholly of the Lord [even the events that seem accidental are really ordered by Him]." Even though it can seem like casting a lot is just leaving something to chance, I believe that the practice of the time was prayerful, ceremonial, and intended to discover the will of God. Check out Acts 1:23-26, when Peter and the apostles used lots to discover the Lord's choice for a new apostle to replace Judas: they prayed first. We see from this that the practice was still used during New Testament times, before the Holy Spirit was given on the Day of Pentecost. However, I have not yet studied further to determine whether it was still in use after the Gift of the Holy Ghost was given. |

2 | Not about gambling: about God's will. | Prov 16:33 | Makarios | 46378
Greetings MomPete! So true, so true! Here is a little more commentary to back up what you have stated from the "Life Application Study Bible." "Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap; but its whole disposing [is] (p) from the LORD. (p) So that there is nothing that ought to be attributed to fortune: for all things are determined in the counsel of God which will come to pass." (1) "Proverbs 16:33 The lot - As the ancient practice was in deciding doubtful things. The event of which though casual to men, is directed by God's providence." (2) "..Note, 1. The divine Providence orders and directs those things which to us are perfectly casual and fortuitous. Nothing comes to pass by chance, nor is an event determined by a blind fortune, but every thing by the will and counsel of God. What man has neither eye nor hand in God is intimately concerned in."
