1 | further question on "Sons of God" | Gen 6:2 | bandit | 198376
Jim, A question. I know that many interpret the "Sons of God" in Genesis 6:2 as the godly line of Seth with the daughters of man being from Cain's line. This was the opinion of Augustine and the Reformers as well. But can you provide any insight on how that would match with the "Sons of God" in Job 38:7 being angels? I think 2 Peter 2:4 is also taken as a reference to the incident in Genesis 6:2. I've heard the major objection to the "Sons of God" being angels is Christ's comment in Matthew 22 that angels do not procreate. But Jude 1:6-7 speaks of angels leaving their first estate and going after strange flesh and fornication. I'm not trying to cause confusion but wanted to reconcile what I'm reading in some of my studies with the different viewpoints. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks! |

2 | further question on "Sons of God" | Gen 6:2 | Jim Estes | 198394
Hi Bandit, We know that when a son was born to Seth, men began to call upon the name of the Lord (Gen 4:26). Did this line of Seth remain righteous? Obviously not, because later all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth (Gen 6:12). What happened between these two events? The “Sons of God” were taking the daughters of men as wives. Angels are at times referred to as “sons of God” (Job 1:6, 38:7). The term is also applied to Christians (John 1:12, Romans 8:14, 19, Philippians 2:15 and 1 John 3:1-2). It is also used to refer to mankind in general, because all were created by God (Psalms 82:6-7). What are the “sons of God” in this verse? The very next verse says, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever . . .” (Gen 6:3) When we are resurrected, we “neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like Angels in heaven.” (Matthew 22:30, Mark 12:25) Therefore, Angels do not take wives. Angels are spirit and women are human and therefore cannot combine to reproduce, since they are different types of beings. Each being must reproduce after its own kind (Genesis 1:11-12, 21, 24-25). I do not know if Angels reproduce or not, but if they do, they reproduce Angels and not humans. If Angels were able to reproduce with women, what would their children be like? Would they be half-angel and half-human? Would they be little demons? Man-made interpretations can quickly border on the bizarre. God was not going to strive with “man” forever, Angels do not marry, and Angels cannot mate and reproduce with a different type of being. The meaning of scripture may not be initially clear, but God’s Holy Word will interpret itself. Jim |

3 | further question on "Sons of God" | Gen 6:2 | skccab | 198396
Shalom Jim, I have to apologize. I answered your first post far too quickly. I used to use, way back in the '70s and 80's, a Dake Annotated and sometimes old beliefs find their way back in my mind. I'm still not too sure about how "righteous" these men were (you're note of "all men began to call upon the name of the Lord" is one I had just sort of skirted over and will have to re-read and ponder on), but they were indeed men. I had forgotten that this was before Moses and Sinai and also I had forgotten about "everything after its own kind" from Gen. 1 and 2. Wouldn't the mixture of angel and human woman be much like the donkey and horse? a mule that cannot reproduce. So, even if the "sons of god" had been angels and they did manage to produce offspring with human women, I imagine that God would have similar non-reproduction built in, and we wouldn't have the narrative in Genesis that we do have. Once again, I'm at fault here. I should not have answered so quickly. still learning Cheri |
