Hi, jholler... As I recall, scholars have suggested that this statement was intended to be a form of assurance to quell the fears of his wives. From this perspective it is thought that the murders were some kind of self-defense. The reasoning was that if Cain killed his brother and received divine protection, then Lamech's unintentional killing would warrant even greater protection.
