Upon thinking about this discussion and all of its import, I also have to say the following. This first ocassion of disobedience of God's strict instructions is certainly a reflection of the sinful nature of human kind. You might say, it's basic in our nature to "set our own course" or "have our own way." I realize this might sound like a reversal of my previous statement but I guess it's a little confusing like when a parent first starts slaps a two year old's hand for touching things that the parent doesn't want touched. The child has no clue as to why. All he/she knows if he touches it, he experiences pain. So slowly but surely, the child learns right and wrong. I hope this helps and doesn't confuse the issue. The Hebrew word for evil means useless because it is broken. Other words mean useless because worn out etc. The word for evil is translated wicked when used of breaking the marriage covenant and temple prostitution. It is translated evil when breaking a covenant with God or a business contract. The sin was learning to break covenants, specifically the covenant with God not to eat of the fruit of the tree. | ||||||
