Hi Lorna, Welcome to the forum. I don't know of any version of the Scriptures that says, "In the beginning god..." (even with corrected spelling) We have compared Genesis 1:1 with John 1:1, "In the beginning was the Word..." What do you think? |

Hi Kalos, I'm still trying to get people to capitalize pronouns of Deity. A lot of people here lately seem to have broken shift keys. I would have wanted Ioma here to capitalize God. But you also, when you put GOD in all caps for emphasis it doesn't tell us how you look at it; it could be god or God. When I was looking for a verse to show why it is important to differentiate I came upon two verses for comparison. Exodus 20:3, "You shall have NO OTHER gods before Me." It can't be typed Gods because there is only one God. As verse 23 says, "You shall not make other gods besides Me; gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not make for yourselves." Exodus 34:14, "---for you shall not worship ANY OTHER god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God---" In passing I have a question for you. Do you think that God's name is Jealous? Or do you think that this word should be lower case as in "My name is holy". I know you have more important questions to work on, but it's good talking to you. From the heart, Ray |

Question: Do you think that God's name is Jealous? Or do you think that this word should be lower case as in "My name is holy". Reply: Exodus 34:14 NAS. --for you shall not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God -- Amplified. For you shall worship no other god; for the Lord, Whose name is Jealous, is a jealous (impassioned) God, New English Translation. "For you must not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name[8] is Jealous, is a jealous God. "[8]Here, too, the emphasis on God's being a jealous God is repeated (see Exod 20:5). The use of 'name' here is to stress that this is his nature, his character." The Hebrew word "Shem" (Strong's #08034) here translated "name" has more than one meaning. It can be translated "name; reputation; memory; renown" (Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1984). Actually, God's name is not God. It is Yahweh, which appears nearly 7,000 times in the Hebrew text of the OT. "Yahweh/Yah (or Jehovah). yhwh (or JHVH), the tetragrammaton because of its four letters, is, strictly speaking, the only proper name for God. It is also the most frequent name, occurring in the Old Testament 6,828 times (almost 700 times in the Psalms alone). Yah is a shortened form that appears fifty times in the Old Testament, including forty-three occurrences in the Psalms, often in the admonition "hallelu-jah" (lit. praise Jah). English Bibles represent the name yhwh by the title "LORD" (written in capitals to distinguish it from "lord" [adonai]. The Septuagint rendered yhwh as kyrios (Lord). The line from yhwh to adonai to kyrios is significant for the Pauline statement: "And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" (Php 2:11)" (Baker's Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology, (http://bible.crosswalk.com/Dictionaries/BakersEvangelicalDictionary/bed.cgi) |
