1 | Circumcision reduces HIV rates by half | Gen 17:11 | Parable | 181258 | ||
The following research results were reported at http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/health/july-dec06/malaria_12-14.html "Results of two studies conducted in Africa show that circumcision can cut the rate of HIV infection in heterosexual men by 50 percent." "The evidence has been growing for about 10 years that male circumcision is protective against HIV infection, not only to the man, but also to the partner of the man, if the man is HIV positive and his partner is not." "...male circumcision is highly protective, and it helps to explain the pattern of HIV-AIDS that we see around the world." Makes one wonder what health benefits might have been realized at the time of Abraham.... |

Hello Parable, Before I would assign any validity to the studies, I would have to know the statistics, if any, relating to circumcision and socioeconomic status. I already know that socioeconomic status does have correlations with education and lifestyle. Furthmore, education and lifestyle have direct correlations to HIV infection. In any case, an interesting thing about Abraham's time, as I understand it, is that free-for-all, anything goes, if it makes you feel good sexual relationships were not the norm. Unfortunately, it is the norm in many cultures today, including the US. The best HIV prevention is God's plan for sexual relationship exlusively between a man and a woman after they are married. Circumcision, in Abraham's time, was a matter of covenant. God bless, Jeff |

Apparently, there are medical reasons, not just behavioral. One cited was that the foreskin is like a sponge for viral particles, and uncircumsized men are generally less hygienic. Even in a monogamous marital relationship, if one partner has HIV, the rate of transmission to the other is reduced by half, in either direction, man to woman or woman to man. Also, I'm not sure that your belief about the sexual ethics during Abraham's time is supported. Indeed, I expect it was not all that much different from today, perhaps due to cultural/religious factors. |

It's hard to imagine the ethics were that different from then to now when you take into consideration Sodom and Gomorrha. However, when you state "Even in a monogamous marital relationship, if one partner has HIV, the rate of transmission to the other is reduced by half, in either direction, man to woman or woman to man."… Please elaborate on how one contracts the virus if this is the nature of their relationship. God had it right. See my previous post on this subject. Rather than sending doctors, maybe we should concentrate on sending the Gospel. Stand in His Grace, WOS |

Sure. Sharing of needles for IV drug delivery (by resource-limited health care providers or by illicit drug users), transfusions of infected blood or clotting factors, during birth as a child passes through the birth canal, after birth through breast milk, accidentally when health care workers are stuck by infected needles or are otherwise exposed to infected fluids at open wounds or mucous membranes. It is possible to get HIV without being sexually immoral. My point about circumcision was that perhaps modern science is finally catching up with at least part of God's wisdom imparted so long ago. |

You mention many ways in which the virus is transmitted (some of which are still directly related to sinful lifestyles), but by your topic of discussion, you imply the spread of the virus through fornication and science's attempt to remedy that with circumcision, otherwise, why the concern? Whether or not one is circumcised has no ramifications on spreading the virus through other means. Sorry if I missed your point, but so long as modern science seeks an attempt to remedy a situation in part, to still allowing sinful lifestyles without the consequences, they are far from God's wisdom. Psalm 111:10 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all they that do his commandments: His praise endureth for ever. That’s just my opinion though. Good responses, Brothers Hank, Jeff, and WOS... It is interesting when the secular world discovers benefits associated with the directives of Scripture. However, we greatly err when our focus shifts to those benefits. That kind of thinking is called pragmatism. We do well to always remember that pragmatism was one of the things at the roots of the deception of Eve (Genesis 3:6). So much for human wisdom! As you know, we do not submit to the command of our God for the benefits that we derive -- even when He graciously pours out His many blessings! We submit to His command because He is our Sovereign Lord, alone deserving the complete and unquestioned obedience of all His creation. In Him, Doc |
