1 | Significance of animals? | Gen 15:9 | Mommapbs | 136619
What is the significance of the kinds of animals? Why three years old for the heifer, goat and ram? Why a heifer, a female goat and a male sheep? (2 girls and a guy!?) |

2 | Significance of animals? | Gen 15:9 | Emmaus | 136642
Mommapbs, I have nothing to offer on the gender divisions. Howevere it is worthnoting that most of the animals sacrificed by the Israelites were worshiped as gods in Egypt. When Moses wanted to lead the Israelites into the desert to offer scrifice, Pharoah refused and suggested they sacrifice where they were in Egypt. Moses responded that the sacrifice the Israelites would make would be an abomination to the Egyptians. Why? Because they would be scrificing their gods. See Exodus 8:21-28 Ex 8:26 But Moses said, "It is not right to do so, for we will sacrifice to the LORD our God what is an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what is an abomination to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not then stone us? Emmaus |

3 | Significance of animals? | Gen 15:9 | Mommapbs | 136648
Greetings Emmaus - an interesting reference to be sure! Somehow I am wondering if these animals represented something else though. As we examine the Law and see the sacrifices God required I see the peace, burnt, and sin offerings represented here. Perhaps the heifer represents the the peace offering, the ram as the burnt offering and the goat as the sin offering. A picture of the sacrifice of Christ. I'm still pondering the whole birds. (These were only slain by the priest as a sin offering - I'm reminded that the Holy Spirit descended as a "dove" and Christ willingly laid down His life . . .Christ is our High Priest,) I suspect there is much to be mined from this passage of Scripture. But I'm also thinking about the greatest commandment: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. In this covenant, the animals were divided (representing our divided heart?)perhaps they also represented what God demanded and presented a picture of how short we fall in our devotion to Him. Since it was He alone who walked between the animals, it demonstrated that He would keep the covenant to restore what was divided? A foreshadowing of the cross of Christ. The smoking pot or oven (an all consuming fire - where there is smoke, something is burning, something is being consumed - sin?)And the torch, not that we would see the effect of the light, but The Light. God is the Source of our restoration and unity IN Him. (Titus 3:3-7 comes to mind here.) Please forgive my ramblings, but this is mostly how I meditate on God's Word - pondering and searching out - going down "rabbit trails" to be sure, but learning a lot along the way . . . now the application . . . Blessings, mommapbs |
