Dear Biblicalman, Although we do need to be careful about imposing contemporary Western thinking on the peoples of the Scriptures, we also need to be especially careful of what I call reverse chronological chauvinism. The ancient peoples were much more sophisticated in their thinking than what we are willing to given them credit. Indeed, there is significant evidence for a very high order of intellectual exchange between people groups -- in such areas as jurisprudence, political/economic sciences, and philosophy. Indeed, many of our own presuppositions are built firmly on foundations laid in their day rather than our own. Although it may be true that the sequential historical narrative of Thucydides may not have been practiced by the ancient Hebrews, it is also clear that Moses was probably one of the best educated people of his day. That would have included the use of fairly complex mathematics. Indeed, Josephus argues that Abraham was responsible for introducing the Egyptians to much more advanced mathematics and physics than they had garnered on their own. In Him, Doc |
