1 | Boasting: Blowing or tooting...? | Ps 75:10 | Ray | 118728
Psalm 75:10, NKJ, "All the horns of the wicked I will also cut off, But the horns of the righteous shall be exalted." Of whom is the pronoun "I" speaking of here? I am interested in this verse as one who counts pronouns of Deity. Should I count it or not? The verse of reference in our Study Bibles is Psalm 101:8. From the heart, Ray |

2 | Boasting: Blowing or tooting...? | Ps 75:10 | Emmaus | 118729
Ray, Here is the NAB version of Psalm 75 with footnotes. Psalms Chapter 75 1 For the leader. Do not destroy! A psalm of Asaph; a song. 2 We thank you, God, we give thanks; we call upon your name, declare your wonderful deeds. You said: 3 "I will choose the time; I will judge fairly. 4 The earth and all its inhabitants will quake, but I have firmly set its pillars." Selah 5 So I say to the boastful: "Do not boast!" to the wicked: "Do not raise your horns! 6 Do not raise your horns against heaven! Do not speak arrogantly against the Rock!" 7 For judgment comes not from east or from west, not from the desert or from the mountains, 8 But from God who decides, who brings some low and raises others high. 9 4 Yes, a cup is in the LORD'S hand, foaming wine, fully spiced. When God pours it out, they will drain it even to the dregs; all the wicked of the earth must drink. 10 But I will rejoice forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob, 11 Who has said: "I will break off all the horns of the wicked, but the horns of the just shall be lifted up." Footnotes 1 [Psalm 75] The psalmist gives thanks and rejoices (Psalm 75:2, 10) for the direct intervention of God, which is promised in two oracles (3-4,11). Expecting that divine intervention, the psalmist warns evildoers to repent (Psalm 75:5-9). 2 [2] You said: supplied for clarity here and in Psalm 75:11. The translation assumes in both places that the psalmist is citing an oracle of God. 3 [5] Do not raise your horns!: the horn is the symbol of strength; to raise one's horn is to exalt one's own power as Psalm 75:5 explains. 4 A cup: "the cup of God's wrath" is the punishment inflicted on the wicked. Cf Isaiah 51:17; Jeremiah 25:15-29; 49:12; Ezekiel 23:31-33. Spiced: literally, "a mixed drink"; spices or drugs were added to wine. Cf Proverb 9:2,5 Emmaus |

3 | Boasting: Blowing or tooting...? | Ps 75:10 | Ray | 118778
Hi Emmaus, Thank you for your post. The question I would ask of the NAB is similar to the one I ask here of the NKJ in Psalm 75:10. The question has simply moved to verse 5 of your post (verse 4 of the NKJ, NASB). That is, "who is the pronoun "I" speaking of here in the NAB?" The footnotes of your post say that it is the Psalmist speaking, NAB, verse 5, "So I say to the boastful: "Do not boast!" to the wicked: "Do not raise your horns!"" The NKJ and the NASB, however, have verses 3 through 5 all determined as being God speaking. (Through verse 6 for your post of the NAB). I agree with the NASB: that God is telling us not to boast and toot our own horn. I believe that Psalm 75:7 and 10 are telling us that it is God who puts down one, and exalts another. It is He who silences one (the wicked) and lifts up the other (the righteous). Psalm 148:13, NASB, "Let them praise the name of the Lord, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven. 14 And He has lifted up a horn for His people, Praise for all His godly ones; Even for the sons of Israel, a people near to Him. Praise the Lord!" We don't need or want to toot our own horns do we, people of God? 2 Cor 10:17, "But he who boasts, let him boast in the Lord. 18 For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends." 4 | Boasting: Blowing or tooting...? | Ps 75:10 | Emmaus | 118781
Ray, I was answering your first question which asked who the "I" in Psalm 45:10 was. Now you are asking who the "I " in verse 5 was. I think verse 5 may be more ambiguous about whether it is the Psalmist or God, but the message is the same, just as it is in 2 Cor 10:17 , which you quoted, where Paul is speaking, although his message is the word of God. Hi Emmaus, Even though the message is the same I believe that it is important to determine who is speaking in Psalm 75:4, NASB. And even though Paul was speaking the word of God in 2 Cor 10:17 and God used him to get the message across, it is still God who is the Judge and He puts down one, and exalts another and it is the Lord who commends. Psalm 75:7, NASB, "But God is the **Judge; He/ puts down one, and exalts another." 2 Cor 10:17, "But HE WHO BOASTS, LET HIM BOAST IN THE **LORD. For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord/ commends." Stars ** and slashes are mine for comparison. Luke 1:51b, "...**He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart. 52 He/ has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble." See Psalm 75:7 above: God judges the thoughts of our hearts. Are we boasting in the Lord? 1 Samuel 2:9b, "But the wicked ones are silenced in darkness; for not by might shall a man prevail. 10 Those who contend with the Lord will be shattered; Against them **He will thunder in the heavens, The Lord/ will judge the ends of the earth;..." Jeremiah 9:23, "Thus says the **Lord, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24 but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me,/..." That is how I see it. From the heart, Ray |
