1 | NT canon in 1st century or 350 AD? | Ps 119:89 | srbaegon | 204364
Hi Tamara, 1. Marcion compiled a canon with his own edited version of Luke and Paul's writings--none others. 2. The Muratorian Fragment is the earliest known list of the canonical NT and dates to about A.D. 170. 3. Yes, there was some disagreement (certainly not "ongoing argumentation") among the church fathers. The material written by apostles was readily accepted. And nobody disagreed that the questioned material was important and beneficial for church life and Christian conduct. Hope this helps. Sorry I was unavailable until now. My wife and I went camping. 2 | NT canon in 1st century or 350 AD? | Ps 119:89 | Tamara Brewington | 204391
Wow, camping, great! Haven't gone since I lived in Washington state as a kid! Thanks a whole buch for getting back to me on this. I was required to go give my pastor an explanation of what my theology class was taught like and this came up. I did go on line trying to study and found out there was a letter from Athanasius that had a complete list of our present NT canon by 365 AD. What I was being taught in class was way off. I was being taught that all, every, book we now have in the NT was accepted as canon in the first century and that there was no contention on any level that they all belonged in the canon, which is clearly incorrect. It helps, thanks again. God Bless, the hat lady |
