1 | Job 1:7 "in" verses "on" | Job 1:7 | BMR47 | 154795
In the Darby, Bishops, KJV the verse Job 1:7 reads thus: Job 1:7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. You will notice that Satan replied: going to and fro "in" the earth, and from walking up and down "in" it. I wonder if there is significance in the use of "in" instead of "on". See the newer translations? Bob |

2 | Job 1:7 "in" verses "on" | Job 1:7 | DocTrinsograce | 154860
Hi, Bob... Brother Tim replied to my request. I don't think He'll mind if I post what he sent to me via e-mail. Thank you, Brother Tim! In Him, Doc ----------------------------- I would concur with your assessment of the meaning of the preposition in Job 1:7. The Greek can sometimes have a real distinction based upon a preposition, but I don't think Hebrew does as much with them. The LXX of Job 1:7 only includes one preposition. It reads, "...Answering, the devil said to the Lord, 'Going around the earth and walking about the under heaven (exists)'" I'm think the last verb is used for all that exists under the heaven, but I'm not sure. :-) Either way, the only preposition in the LXX is 'under' for what is under heaven. ---------------------- |

3 | LXX | Job 1:7 | BMR47 | 154862
Being a novice, I do not undersand the "Lxx", but walking under heaven would be "in" or "on" as the two of you have explained. My question came about from my suspious nature. I am using the Amplified version to help me understand the KJV. If the LXX is what I believe it is then my question is answered. Thank both of you. Bob |

4 | LXX | Job 1:7 | DocTrinsograce | 154863
Hi, Bob... LXX is Roman Numerals for seventy. That's because the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible) was performed by seventy-two Jewish scholars. Weird, I know, it should be LXXII... but history is funny that way. The Septuagint dates to around 250 BC. At least, that is what I recall. Hope that helps. In Him, Doc |
