It depends not on human will or exertion Ultimately God chooses whomever He will, "according to the good pleasure of His will" (Eph. 1:5); "according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself" (Eph. 1:9). God's choosing is in harmony with His sovereignty. Romans 9:10-16 (ESV) And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, [11] though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of his call— [12] she was told, "The older will serve the younger." [13] As it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." [14] What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! [15] For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." [16] So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. NOT OF HUMAN DECISION Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God -- children born not of natural descent, NOR OF HUMAN DECISION or a husband's will, but born of God. John 1:12-13 :: New International Version (NIV) (Emphasis added.) "nor of human decision...but born of God." 'The divine side of salvation: ultimately it is not a man's will that produces salvation but God's will.' (John MacArthur, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997) |
