You need a refresher on your binary! xxxxxxxx is one byte, xxxx IS a bit. Y2K compliant computers ARE still for the most part binary, You got some weird info. 00010000 IS 16, and 11111111 is 255 (in binary.) decimal system is 0-9. hex for 11111111 (binary) is 00FF, i think, but definately not 255. | ||||||

Dude4christ You absolutely right I was wrong but so are you. xxxx is called a half byte not a byte or a bit. xxxx xxxx is a byte. A half byte is made of up 4 binary positions (called bits)which cover the numbers from 0-15 a byte is 8 binary positions and covers 0 - 255. 0000 1111 is 0F or decimal 15 and 0001 0000 is 10 or decimal 16. 1111 1111 is FF or decimal 255 not hex 255. The point I was making is all computers use binary and they did before and after Y2K. While I use to work almost exclusively in machine language and hex, I haven’t done it for 10 years and I stand red faced that I made this basic of a mistake. EdB |
