'Nowhere does Scripture state...' The notion that people can order Satan about when they can't even get their kids to do what they tell them is truly astonishing. OVERSTATING THE BELIEVER’S AUTHORITY ____________________ 'Nowhere does Scripture state that believers have authority over Satan himself.' ____________________ 'The biblical evidence suggesting that believers have been given direct authority over the demonic realm is scantier than is usually supposed. [Neil T.] Anderson applies Matthew 12:29 ("first binds the strong man") to believers, when it is obvious from the preceding seven verses that Jesus was referring to Himself alone. Matthew 18:18 ("bind" and "loose") refers to church discipline, not spiritual warfare, as the larger context makes entirely clear. Anderson uses Ephesians 1:18-21 (Christ is seated above all authorities and powers) combined with Ephesians 2:5-6 (believers are seated with Him) as proof of the believer’s authority over the devil. But rather than dealing with spiritual warfare, these passages speak of Christ’s exaltation by the Father and the believer’s acceptance and exaltation before the Father in Christ." One should therefore be careful not to infer too much from them. 'Nowhere does Scripture state that believers have authority over Satan himself. Those biblical passages that do speak of believers’ authority over the demonic realm apply strictly to driving demons out of lost human beings (Matt. 10:1; Mark 6:7; Luke 10:19; Acts 8:7). They are never applied to pastoral counseling or the believer’s personal battle with the devil. 'This does not mean Christians must accept defeat in spiritual warfare. Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus has won the victory over the devil and all authority has been given to Him (Matt. 28:18; Eph. 1:20-22; Col. 2:15; 1 Pet. 3:22; etc.). While believers do not have the prerogative to say, "I command you, Satan (to do this or not do that)," Jesus does. Believers are indeed positionally seated with Him in heavenly places and are thus made partakers in His victory. They therefore can be confident that if they resist the devil, he will flee from them (James 4:7)." ____________________ (http://www.equip.org/search/) STATEMENT DA082 The Bondage Maker: Examining the Message and Method of Neil T. Radioman 2,All In The Name of Jesus, Matthew, 16:18-19, whosoever thou shall bind on earth shall be bound in heavan...and these things ye shall do and greater.... How many times does scripture hafe to say something before its true?,In my opinion 1. Mth 18:18, this is two, scriptures saying the same thing. Satan is a defeated foe, Its all in the name of Jesus where we have power over defeated enemies including Satan. If we as Christians cant controll our children ,how can we controll the house of God.? But those of us who do, and I am 1, can rebuke, bind and resist the devil. GOD said I could, If you or others dont believe again thats your opinion, I talk to those who want to learn how to conduct spiritual warfare on Jessus terms, the whole armour of God.Resist the devil and he will flee from you. AND bind him and order him to get behind you all in the name of Jesus. DL5.

DL5, First let me say I admire your testimony and perserverence expressed in your personal history posted recently. On the subject of binding and loosing in Matt 16:198-19 and 18:18: I think it is very clear from the context that these verses refer to binding authority in the governance of the Church by Peter and the other Apostles and they are not in this context referring to the binding of demons. The terms "binding" and "loosing" were already in use among the Rabbis of Jesus' time and can be seen in the Talmud. It referred to the authority to make binding decisions within the religious community. Citing these passages in reference to the resistance or "binding" of demons is, I believe, reading something into these particular passages something that is not there. Emmaus |

Emmaus, in this context we are probably both right, for church and for satan. Jesus said they these things we can do and greater..., can we not assume that Jesus defeated satan and paraded him before God, with his fallen angels. I believe so. So in my opinion would we not have power over a defeated foe. Just as in my military career when a enemy is defeated or captured we told him what to do. So why cant we tell satan, a defeated foe what to do? In Christ DL5.Ps. I have a copy of the talmud and have read it. Thanks.

DL5, Jesus defeated the enemy, not us. Jesus can bind him. Scripture written to Christians by the very Peter whom you say had the power to bind demons warns us not to be overconfident in dealing with the devil ourselves but rather to rely on God while resisting, without reference to us binding: 1 Pet 5:7-11 "casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen." I say this as one who believes in exorcism. But even for an Exorcist the first intruction is not to match wits or strength with the demon, but to rely conmpletely on the power of God with and through "prayer and fasting" as Jesus told his disciples. It may seem a fine distinction, but I believe an important one. Not every Christian is an exorcist, nor would most want to be, I suspect. It is spiritual warfare at a high level and there are sometimes real casualties. Emmaus |

Emmaus, I do believe we are still agreeing, just as I said, Only by using the Name of Jesus can we bind satan or anything else. Remember the pharasees .sp. who after seeing the deciples cast out deamens, especially Paul, The evil spirit said, Jesus, I know, and Paul, I know, but who are ye.?, Not only in the name of Jesus but faith in the name.I see no difference in what were saying just a slight misunderstanding. I also believe in excorsism, casting out of deamons, jesus said we could. Like I said we can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me.I believe in that Scripture especially when he said all things.I still agree with you, we hafe to know what were doing and rely on the name of Jesus.
