1 | Walking before Him; "Hear Thou..." | 2 Chr 6:39 | Makarios | 105315
Greetings Ray, I do not believe that anyone short of the NASB translators themselves could adequately answer this question. Perhaps you could send an email to the Lockman Foundation regarding how the old 1977 NASB translates 2 Chronicles 6:39. However, in the NASB's defense, the NKJV does not include "thou", even though the KJV and the 1977 NASB's predecessor, 1901 American Standard Version, does. "then hear thou from heaven, even from thy dwelling-place, their prayer and their supplicatons, and maintain their cause, and forgive thy people who have sinned against thee." [2 Chronicles 6:39, ASV] Blessings to you, Makarios |

2 | Walking before Him; "Hear Thou..." | 2 Chr 6:39 | Ray | 105358
Hi Makarios, We can picture in our minds a skit or a movie portrayal of a preacher pontificating a prayer using Thee's and Thou's in a loud voice. Is there a time and place for such a prayer? (Outside of a skit) Can such a prayer be glorifying to God? I believe that it can. I believe that we can balance a prayer that uses the Thee and Thou pronouns which are meant to glorify and honor Him with the prayer that uses the You and Your which show the closeness and familiarity that we can have with Him. We can use and we need that balance, I believe. With that in mind, I am not against using the "hear Thou" phrases of 2 Chronicles in Solomon's prayer. Certainly a "then hear You from heaven" would not be appropriate. :)) A "then hear from heaven" is certainly appropriate for a translation as is in the NKJ for the seven occasions of the phrase. But I wonder if a better interpretation would have it translated as the NKJ does in verses 20 and 21. 2 Chronicles 6:20c, "...that You may hear the prayer which Your servant makes toward this place. 21 And may You hear the supplications of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and when You hear, forgive." So my suggested rendering for verses 23, 25, 27, 30, 33, 35, and 39 would be, "then may You hear". Seven is a nice complete number also is it not? We pray to a perfect God. May He hear us. From the heart, Ray |
