1 | 2 Cor. 5:8 taken out of context | 2 Corinthians | Bible Sleuth | 155610
The statement "to be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD" may have been taken out of context by many in the christian community thinking that this is a confirmation of consciousness upon physical death awaiting resurrection. On the contrary, it speaks of the relationship between the body in the flesh and the presence of the LORD that we should strive to be in. Paul earlier dicussed this in another letter about the war between new and old natures. It is not Paul's standard operating procedure to confuse his readers by jumping from one thought to another. If one is looking for scriptural proof that a saint does not sleep until judgement, he cannot use this text. In doing so, he would be using this text wrongly. We have got to stop taking the Word of God out of context to fit our doctrinal beliefs.

Hi, Bible Sleuth... I cannot find any scholarly commentators in the last four centuries who agree with you. Furthermore, a rexamination of the text does not warrant your interpretation. Are you an advocate of soul sleep? In Him, Doc |

3 | 2 Cor. 5:8 taken out of context | 2 Corinthians | Bible Sleuth | 156363
Thank you for responding to my post. Thousands of scholars will not agree with me. And that's okay. One thing is for sure: we all are going to find out. It is appointed man once to die, then there is a judgement. Whether we sleep as Jesus calls it, or we are awake before our judgement, it is for certain we all will know by and by! I was brought up learning that when a saint is taken from this world in death, he is ushered to his just award. But, that would make the verse that refers to our dieing and going to judgement false. God's Word is not false anywhere. No contradictions anywhere. So I must be wrong. I don't mind sleep. Sleep is good. If it is called soul sleep, I guess I believe in soul sleep now. Whether I sleep or am awake I am in the presence of the LORD and under His Provision and Protection. And there ain't nothing wrong with that! |

Hi Bible Sleuth, Look at 1 Thess 5:10, speaking of Jesus, which says "who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him." Love in Christ, Mark |
