1 | Tithe vs Debts | 2 Corinthians | MLB | 189470
As a new Christian I'm confused on tithing. I want to tithe and give my 10 percent and even more. I also want to pay all my debts as scripture states. My problem is my debts exceed my income. What do I do? If I don't tithe I feel I'm stealing from God, but if I tithe I'm not paying my debts. I need guideance and not finding much in the New Testament.

Hi MLB, I would offer this suggestion. Praying for guidance, read 2 Corinthians 8-9 carefully, slowly, and several times over the next couple of weeks. Meditate on these chapters. Take small sections, and think about them, prayfully, considering what each verse is saying, what it actually means about giving. There is our part, there is God's part, there is how we are to go about it. Look at other passages on giving, such as the Sermon on the Mount. "Stealing from God" in not tithing comes from a failing to obey the Old Covenant, and is not found within the New Covenant. God will lead you individually, according to His special plan for you. All you have is His, you gave it to Him when you gave Him your life. Now its up to Him to decide whether to pay the banker more quickly, or more slowly, whether to give all you have to others, or to give a tithe to your church. Commit within yourself to serve Him however He leads you, and to trust Him for your needs. I have seen God use a variety of means to straighten out my financial house, and He continues to use this area of my life to mold me, conform me to the image of Christ. Seek His leading for you, and He will lead you where you need to go. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
