Thanks brother John. I have never actually read the full story of Martin Luther so if anyone can advise a good short version I'll have to read it. I remember the first time I studied Romans and the stability (and as you say "peace of mind and spirit")it gives to realise that all of Gods dealings are righteous. He righteously judges, and He righteously justifies. Is it any wonder that Paul writes "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen." (Rom 11v33-36) David |

Hi, David... The story of the first toddling steps of the Reformation is a wonderful one. I think you will thoroughly enjoy reading about how God used men like Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, and others. Great men of the faith are rare (Hebrews 11:38a), but when our Lord elects these unlikely fellows for His purposes (Ephesians 4:11-14), invading history at just the right moment (Ephesians 1:10; Isaiah 49:8), it is amazing what He accomplishes (Psalm 107:8). I was looking at www.monergism.com to see if John Hendryx had a good biography of Luther. I was rather surprised to see that he did not, although he has many of the others. However, as I thought about it, it occurred to me that one of the best places to get an overview of the lives of some of these believers, is from John Piper. My pastor regularly attends conferences hosted by Piper's church. Piper often discussed great believers of the faith. You can particularly find these talks here: http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/Biographies/ I download MP3's from here and elsewhere. Right now my Blackberry has about 75 hours of them. I can listen to sermons and lectures anywhere I go. Alternatively, if you prefer to read, Piper has text copies of his messages as well. Of course, this year marks John Calvin's 500th birthday, so you will see at Piper's website references to Calvin. In Him, Doc |
