1 | Carpenter or rabbi? | Matthew | strts5 | 204353
I'm sure this has been discussed before but could not find any posts dealing directly with it. Was Jesus a carpenter or a rabbi? Typically Rabbi's didn't have jobs (I think) and also Jesus was doing the will of the Father. Joseph wasn't his father. Joseph did raise him though. I don't know if this has a diffinitive answere, maybe just two schools of thought. |

2 | Carpenter or rabbi? | Matthew | DocTrinsograce | 204640
Dear Mike, Rabbi was a title granted a Jewish teacher whose knowledge in the law was recognized by his peers. It wasn't earned through schooling in a formal way, as is done today. Most often, Rabbinic teachers took on disciples, who would learn from them. The Sanhedrin consisted of men who had studied under Rabbis who were considered especially knowledgeable and intelligent (cf Acts 22:3). Most Rabbis provisioned themselves, their wives and children, through some sort of family trade or craft. I suppose that some -- a very few -- had sufficient means to allow them to devote it to full time study. It is said that all Talmudic Rabbis had occupations from which they earned a living. We know that Jesus' family were poor (Luke 2:24). It was the duty of every father to train his sons in a trade or craft. We know that Jesus was called a carpenter by His neighbors of Nazareth (Mark 6:3). Therefore, Christ was both Carpenter and Rabbi (John 3:2) -- something that would not have been unusual at all.
