elohim7, Greetings and welcome to the forum. The answer that bianca0517 gave you was pretty close. The numbers do get smaller or as you say go backwards. The calender used during during this period of time was based on the time Christ was born. Thus when yousee, for example the year 500BC is fivehundred years before Christ was born. I also believe we are refering to a Hebrew calender during this time. The calender we use today is based on the Roman calender that became more prevelant with the growth of the Roman empire.
