1 | Hades shall not overpower the church? | Matthew | Truth31 | 123159
KJV Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. We see that Jesus is planning on building his church (singular denoting one). It is quite possible that the "it" is not the church at all but the promise of it being built. Example: Upon this stove I will bake this cake and the people outside will not prevail against it. Meaning the cake is going to get baked and no one will stop it from happening. With this text the church would be built and the gates of hell would not be able to stop it from happening. Just something to think about.

Thank you for responding Truth31. I can see the point you are making. I have never heard this particular interpretation of this verse. But I believe the principle is sound nothing can stop God from building His church, however I will have to think about this idea a bit more.

Perhaps this will aid: Notice Mat.16:18 "I will build.." letting us know that it had not happened yet. It wasn't until the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 that it went from going to exist to actually existing see Acts 2:38-47. Jesus spent a lot of his time specifically preparing his twelve Apostle's for the kingdom to come which is the church. There are many that believe that they are separate, but wisdom reveals otherwise, see Mat. 16:28. Here is one instance of what I mean by preparing them see Lk 24:47(to happen) compared to Acts 2:38,41(happened). The church could not come to pass until Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Look at Jesus’ response regarding Peter’s statement after he told them of his impeding death see Mat.16:23. Jesus knew who was behind this statement and knew he was trying to prevent it from happening. P.S. Please see 2Pet.1:20.
