Cherlday I'm not sure what you want explained. In Matt 22:34-40 The Pharisees are trying to trick Jesus into a wrong answer by asking which is the great command. Jesus gives them the perfect answer, which we now call the two great commandments. In Matt 22: 41-46 Jesus gives the Pharisees a scripture logic test. The Pharisees have been expecting a “son of David” to arise tot he throne as the Messiah and Jesus asks them if that man that arises is merely mortal man why does David can him Lord. Jesus is once again proving His divinity and silencing his critics. EdB |

3 | Explain Matthew 22: 34-46 | Matthew | Ray | 75787
Hi Edb, This is a passage that brings up my old question of whether we need to think of Jesus as "merely mortal man" as you wrote. Do our translations need to put Him in lower case at any time? Is it not confusing to do so? Why do you, Ed, call the Lord "him"? Do you need to know Him as divinity and also as a man with critics? The passage revolves around whose Son is He. I agree with and go with the NKJ in this passage. That version capitalizes Son throughout. All through our translations we hear the people calling out to the "Son of David", even in the King James version. I believe that the Pharisees and religious leaders should have been expecting "God with us" and not a "son". I go with the NKJ right now for John 7:46 also. "The officers answered, 'No man ever spoke like this Man!'" Is it any wonder that the people enjoyed listening to Him? 1) I also would like to express my belief that David "in the Spirit" spoke by inspiration as the NASB margin offers. So the "in the Holy Spirit" of Mark 12:36 I also see as by inspiration, or by holy spirit. From the heart, Ray |

4 | Explain Matthew 22: 34-46 | Matthew | EdB | 75792
Ray To me Jesus is never merely mortal man. The use of small h in him was a mistype rather than a statement of theology. I always try to capitalize any and all references to the person of Jesus. To me Jesus was divine, in an "earth suit". I go with the NKJV also on this. Jesus had to be the most interesting Person in the world and I imagine the scriptures fall way short of be able to express His ability to capture and electrify the audience when He spoke. How are you my brother? EdB |
