The 2 Kings 9:29 passage says (in the NASB) that he became king in the 11th year of Joram. The 2 Kings 8:25 says he "began to rule" in the 12th year. There is a difference in time here - just like our US Presidents are elected in one year but don't "begin their term" till the next. I would guess that there was some period of time between when the king "became" king by title and the time he actually began to rule. It could also be that he became king right at the end of a year and began to rule the next day or week which was the next year. | ||||||

Thank you for an excellent answer f860th! Yes, I see where the text would make sense in light of your explanation. The MacArthur Study Bible agrees with you also! :) "In 2 Kings 8:25, the non-accession-year system of dating was used, so that Joram's accession year was counted as the first year of his reign. Here, (2 Kings 9:29) the accession-year dating system was used, where Joram's accension year and his second year were counted as the first year of his reign." Blessings, and welcome to the Study Bible Forum! Nolan |
