Dear Lenpaul, You impose your own values on God. Start with the Biblical presupposition that all that God does is good, righteous, holy, perfect, and wise. You and I are none of these things. Consequently, we are not in a position to impute anything negative to His actions. To do so is not only presumptuous -- rooted in incredible hubris -- but is also a grave sin (James 1:13; Ezekiel 18:29-30; Proverbs 19:3). In Him, Doc |

hello doc, i try to say things more clearly. you say i impose my own values on god as if to mean i must not question why god orders such cruelty to horses. but god tells me test all things, 1 thess 5:21. god also tells me in pro 16:9, a man plans his course, but the lord determines his steps. you imply i must not question, yet this is what god is directing me to do. maybe this is god's way of testing you as a bible scholar. you say i must start with the presupposition that all that god does is good, righteous, holy, perfect and wise. this is exactly what i am doing and why i am asking these questions. on the other hand it is you and all the churches along with my past sda religon that have not applied this principle. the bible is filled with passages of the perfection, justice and immutability of god. deut 32:4, his work is perfect 2 sam 22:31, his way is perfect prov 30:5, every word of god is pure ps 33:4, his word is right, all work is truth is 40:8, the word of god stands forever you are correct in saying that you and i are none of these things and are not in position to impute anything negative to his actions. yet you and the rest of the church leadership have done that very thing. the entire chapter of psalm 119 expounds on the facts that god's commandments, precepts, statutes, judgements, laws, testimonies and word are righteous, faithful, just, good, pure and endure forever to all generations. num 23:19-20, a command from the lord cannot be reversed ecc 3:14, whatever god does shall be forever, nothing can be added or taken from it. mal 3:6, "for i am the lord, i do not change." matt 5:18, it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for any part of the law to fail. 1 pe 1:25, but the word of the lord endures forever. james 1 :17, in everything that comes from god there is no variableness nor shadow of turning. here are some of the many teachings of god that your church and many others altered and changed over the years: Leviticus 21:16-23, Any physically handicapped person may not approach the sanctuary, lest he profane it. Exodus 20:8-11, Remember the seventh day sabbath to keep it holy, for the Lord blessed the seventh day. Exodus 21:7, A father may sell his daughter into slavery. Leviticus 20:10, Whoever commits adultry shall be put to death. Deuteronomy 21:15-17, A man can have two wives, but guidelines do exist if one is loved more than the other. Deuteronomy 22:5, A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man. Deuteronomy 22:28-29, A virgin who is raped must marry her rapist. 2 Samuel 5:13, David being a man after God's own heart (Acts 13:22) is blessed with more wives and concubines revealing God's support of polygamy. Proverbs 31:6-7, Let he who is with a heavy heart drink wine to forget his miseries. Ecclesiastes 8:15, God commended the enjoyment of life for there is nothing better under the sun than for man to eat, drink and be merry. Ecclesiastes 9:5, The dead know nothing and have no further reward. Isaiah 66:17, Eating pork is an abomination to the Lord. Matthew 5:5-13, Prayer should be simple and in private and not as the hypocrites do standing in the synagogues. Matthew 5:39-42, Do not resist an evil person, retaliate or turn away someone who wants to borrow from you. Luke 6:30, If anyone steals from you do not demand anything back. Luke 6:37, Do not judge or condemm anyone. Luke 14:26, To be a disciple of Christ, you must hate your mother, father, wife and children, brothers and sisters. Luke 14:33, To be a disciple of Christ one must forsake all that he has. Luke 16:18, Whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery. Luke 18:22, To inherit eternal life you must sell all that you have and give to the poor. 1 Corinthians 7:29, Since time is short, married men should live as though they had no wife. 1 Corinthians 14:34, Women are not permitted to speak in the churches. 1 Timothy 2:11-12, Women are to learn in silence and are not permitted to teach or have authority over a man. 1 Peter 3:1, Wives must be submissive to their husbands even when the husband is a non-believer. Titus 2:9, Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything. Colossians 3:22, Salves are to obey their masters with sincerity of heart. you see doc, by not testing all things you have been a part of many changes. if you find bible passages that prove the changes, then you have discovered contradictions to god's perfection and immutability. you are guilty of your own charge, that of imputing the negative to god's actions. god is not the author of confusion, but man has changed so much of god's original work that we are all confused. but no needs to worry, we will not be held accountable if we don't understand. lenpaul |

hi hank, i am a former devout adventist. i was raised believing eg white was god's messenger for the remnant of the last days. i stayed away from church many years until recently. i went back and began reading the bible for my self, i mean really reading it only to find that churches, and i have been to many, only tell you what they want you to hear, just so they can scare you into parting with your hard earned dollar. they are like many bible scholars, their explanations are more confusing than what the authors of the bible are actually saying. many scholars simply resort to "context" as an explanation. but no one has ever answered properly according to the context of the bible which should be "god's word," perfect without confusion. |

Hi, lenpaul, and thanks for your prompt response. Not knowing in what part of the country you live or what sorts of churches you've visited, or even what sorts of churches you're looking for, it is impossible for any of us on the Forum to offer you advice beyond the general advice that we give all seekers for a church home, which is to find a church that holds a high view of Scripture and consistently teaches sound doctrine. Of course, one has to search the Scriptures diligently in order to be able to distinguish between sound doctrine and false doctrine. ..... Some churches may have as their aim to "scare you into parting with your hard-earned dollar," as you phrased it, but by no means all do. You don't want to associate yourself with those kinds of churches you have described, so shake the dust off your feet, friend, and continue your search. If indeed you are a regenerate believer, take your burden to the Lord and petition Him to help you find a Christ-centered orthodox church. I read your long list of "problem" passages you brought before Doc. My simple solution to your complex problems is to put your trust in God, who alone is Sovereign, who alone is Holy, who alone is Omnipotent, who alone is Omniscient, who alone is Transcendent, who alone is Perfect. Let God be God. In your life, in your soul, in your whole being. Bow down to Him in humble submission. Trust in the Lord and lean not to your own understanding, dear soul. Let Him direct your paths. Presume not God to have your ways or to think your thoughts. That's hubris, and hubris is an evil thing that militates against having a right relationship with God. --Hank | ||||||
