1 | Will we know our loved ones in heaven? | 2 Sam 12:23 | Makarios | 26173
Hello rapturedon! Yes, I believe that humans do not lose their consciousness after death. In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17, Paul deals with the "dead in Christ" and assures the Thessalonian Christians that there will be a reunion of loved ones and that they will recognize their loved ones in the eternal state. This sounds very much like consciousness to me! Also, David knew (in 2 Samuel 12:23) that he would be reunited with his deceased son in heaven. He had no doubt about recognizing him. As well, Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matt. 17:1-8), and they were recognized by all who were present. And, in the example that you have already cited in Luke 16:19-31, the rich man, Lazarus, and Abraham were all recognizant of each other in the intermediate state. The consciousness of a believer immediately following death is a blissful experience (Philippians 1:21) since we will be with the Lord Jesus! And the consciousness of an unbeliever is not so pleasant (Luke 16:19-31). Blessings to you, Nolan |

2 | Will we know our loved ones in heaven? | 2 Sam 12:23 | danieln | 26177
Hi Nolan, 1 Thessalonians 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. this is telling us that the Dead in Christ will be resurrected at the second comming is it not? Indeed if we are already in heaven after we die what is the need for the second resurrection As for the Parable of the Rich man and Lazarus, this is a parable and i beleive it is symbolic, not literal. Most parables are symbolic (ie Matthew 13:24 Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.) I dont believe that we have consiousness once dead: Psalm 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.(this clearly says the dead do not experience any 'reward' or bliss after death - and how could they if their thoughts have perished) but of course i believe that we will see our loved ones once in heaven (so long as they are saved too), but after the 2nd comming and resurrection. daniel |

3 | Will we know our loved ones in heaven? | 2 Sam 12:23 | There | 26179
Hello Daniel, In 1Cor. 15:35-58 Paul explains that the it is our physical, flesh bodies that will be changed and resurrected at Christ's return if we are saved, not our consciousness. It would seem that since our minds/soul/spirit have already been renewed to a state of communion with God, there is no need for them to remain separated from Him. I believe the scripture you've mentioned from Ecclesiates 9 explains that after physical death, no one will have part in anything "under the sun". So the dead will not participate in any way with those still physically alive, and eventually memory of them will be forgotten by those who are physically alive. And Psalms 146... I believe is a good reference for Ecclesiates, and is saying the same thing. At death, man will no longer give any thought to what is going on here on the earth, i.e. thoughts of things happening "under the sun" will perish at a person's death. Hope this helps. God bless. |
