1 | do you have to be baptized? | Acts 4:12 | weezach | 11389
There actually is NO scriptiure in the bible, where it specifically tells you that you must be baptized. However, many people give the response that, "that is what Jesus did and we are to follow his example." See Matthew 3:13-15. The bible DOES specically say that we are to acknowledge our sinfulness and to seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ John 3:16; Romans 10: 9-10, 13. for example and that it is only through Jesus Christ that we can be accepted into heaven. Whether you are baptized or not. Your well-intentioned friend has taken what is considered doctrine and made it into scripture. Ask your friend politely to find and quote to you the scripture where it says that if you are not baptized you will not go to heaven, saved or not. Then post it everywhere on this message board. I would love to see it. Because it just isn't there. There is only one name under heaven by which we may be saved and it isn't baptism (see Acts 4:12. You don't have to be mean or rude, but do ask your friend to show you where it says that. Good question! I hope you will begin to question many things you are told about your salvation. I believe that is what Paul was referring to when he said to "work out your salvation." (See Phillipians 2:12. We are not to take for granted anything that anyone says to us, according to John in I John 4:1 "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they be of God: because many false prophets ar gone out into the world." (not even what I am saying) but, to check what is said against the Bible and see how it stacks up against the bible. That is our plumb line. I wish you well in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ upon whom we are saved. never be afraid to question what someone tells you about the bible. Do check it out! It is your duty. Well done for you today. |

2 | divorced pastors as overseers | 1 Tim 3:2 | weezach | 7071
Hank, It is ridiculous to ask whether a divorced pastor should remain in the minitry. It is ridiculous to say that one is casting stones at a godly man because he is divorced. It is riduculous to say that Moses was NOT a godly man because he could not go into the promised land-- because he "got angry" Moses was a very godly man. Your preacher friend is a very godly man (on your word). God instituted marriage as a covenant that should not be broken until death. Based on that premise, it is very logical to say that the "husband of one wife" indicates not divorced. Divorce was allowed by the PERMISSIVE will of God. It is (still today) not his DIVINE will that mankind choose and then divorce a mate. Because an individual is divorced does not make them less of a godly person. Any sin does not make a person less of a godly person. Was Peter godly? What about David? You and I have just been talking "little sins" (I realize there are no little sins) David not only committed adultry, but he murdered as well. Was he any less of a godly person? NO. Whether or not a person's sins justify them as not godly or whether their life's testimony justifies them as godly is NOT the question. The verse is putting forth its job qaulifications. Because one falls short of one prerequisite does not mean the person is ineligible to be an overseer. It means they have fallen short (ohh where have we heard THAT one before)? Perhaps one has a bit of a temper, that would be in direct conflict with temperate. Does that make them ineligible? No. It means they fall short of the qualifications set forth in the bible of what an overseer SHOULD be... not necessarily WHAT they ARE. David, the one with the murderous heart, and lust in his veins is called "the man after God's own heart. That's quite a contradiction don't you think? What makes the difference? A person can be all of those things listed and still be ineligible for the job. You can be all of those things and not be a child of God, a sin-filled, blood redeemed, heir-to-the-throne, kin to David, grafted in child of God. and without that, you ain't nothing. Jim Bakker can be an overseer, don't you think? your pastor friend can be an overseer. The thief on the cross can be an overseer. You could be an overseer; however, since I can't be the husband of one wife, I guess that means I'm out... |

3 | Elder must be 'the husband of one wife'? | 1 Tim 3:2 | weezach | 6997
How about "none of the above", I have always taken this verse to mean that he should not be divorced. That being divorced would indicate that he could not manage his own affairs, and if he can't handle his own affairs, how can he handle God's affairs? Don't you think someone in the church body would have a hard time looking to this individual for counseling, guidence, etc, if he presents a picture of chaos in his own life?
