Hank Since the Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity, is guidance or instruction from the Holy Spirit considered revelation from God. Or is revelation focused more in some other manner or topic(s). Since both are God communicating with us, why the difference in terminology. Thanks Learn |

Mommapbs Thanks for the encouragement and support. Not to be disrespective to you, but I think I have to disagree with your comment that we don't need to do Christ-like things. I think if I truly believe in Christ, my not doing Christ-like things, is disrespectful to God. One thing I have learned in the past two years is that Jesus came to earth as a man - 100 percent man. And He proved that we can reject sin. I'm not talking about Jesus being born without sin - He did not accept sin, He rejected it. Maybe just accepting Jesus is enough to meet the minimum standard for entry into heaven, but I think God wants a closer relationship with us than a "just enough" relationship. I asked another question about why Catholics believe in Good Works. The response I received by someone named Emmaus (I am assuming is a Catholic) made a lot of sense to me. Thanks and I hope we have a chance to talk again Learn |

My family never was very religious and as a result, I never was. I'm not a drug user, or an alcoholic or an abuser of people. I'm just what I think is a regular guy. I enjoy my brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews and so on. About two years ago, I went to a Baptist Easter service with my brother and sister-in-law (my brother was like me until he met his wife, she had a positive influence on him. It was during that weekend at my brothers that I noticed how much more enriched his life seemed to be than when he was living back home. Even more enriched than our parents lives seem to be. It obviously is a combination of his being a husband and, then a new father and I believe that part of his enrichment is also from his faith. His life/attitude seems more complete and fulfilled. Since then, I have been more receptive to Christianity than I had been previously and I feel as though I am becoming a more complete person. I have not turned into a fantatical Jesus-freak but I'm taking it one step at a time. I read, study - I've monitored this forum and others, again just taking my time. Every once in a while, like here, I dig in a little deeper and then try to apply a thought or an idea to the big picture. In answer to your question as to what was missing - God was missing from my life. I'm not sure as to what you mean when you say I'm getting hung up. I never was completely sure what the full scope of good works included - through your help and Hanks, I now know - and then I applied it to other thoughts I've had over the past two years. Learn |

Hank I think you may have over-simplified my question in that if we die on Tuesday will our eternity be different than if we died on Friday. Refocus the timeframe to years instead of days. If I accept Jesus when 20 years old, but by age fifty, I say "who knows if there is a God" and then act accordingly. But, nonetheless, you have been helpful to me in understanding the concept of Good Works and for that, I thank you. I would like to summarize where I am at and then we can both move on to other things. Some people make a blanket statement and say, yes I believe Jesus is my Savior. They mark the date on the calendar and then they move on.I do believe they are sincere. And no, I don't believe every Christian produces Good Works just because they are a Christian. Other people, in accepting Jesus as Savior, also seek a relationship with Jesus. And I believe that the value either person puts on Good Works, is based upon what type of relationship the person is seeking. A person seeking a more intimate relationship with Jesus will be more focused on using Jesus as a role model as to how a good Christian should live their life, and they will want to live like a Christian should - aka Good Works. If someone has truly achieved holiness with God, then their actions will reflect it. I don't know if Good Works is really needed for salvation, I think if you accept Jesus, then yes you get to go to heaven. You've met the minimum standard for getting in heaven. But I also believe that the true relationship which God seeks with us, is one of intimacy - a very close personal relationship - a oneness as Jesus prayed for in John 17:21. And I believe that God holds that relationship in higher esteem than the relationship of the person who met the minimum standard for getting into heaven. I believe that people like Moses, Abraham, the Apostles to name a few have reached that level of intimacy with God and we know how highly they are regarded by God. So, is Good Works needed - it depends on what you want. Minimum entry or intimacy with God. As I said before, I'm still learning so in six months or a year I may understand things a bit differently and hopefully more clearly. Thank you for your help. Learn |

Hank I read all of the passages which you listed and I understand what you are saying. In another part of this thread I asked Mommapbs the following question: "As long as I am sorry for committing this sin, it will be forgiven, again and again and again - because I am human and I am going to make the same mistakes over and over (sometimes). If the time ever comes in which, for whatever reason and whatever type, I sin and I refuse to feel remorse for committing this sin. Over and over again - will God ever refuse to grant me salvation." Now, this question ties in with one of the references you gave me to read James 2:17-18. If you continue this passage, in v.19, James notes that even demons believe Jesus is God. But in V.20, James says that faith without works is useless. My original question here was, what exactly is Good Works. I'm understanding the answer to be, just living and acting like Christ. Then, based upon James, first and foremost, I need to accept Jesus as my Savior, but I can't just continue on acting as I did before I was saved, I need to act like a Christian. And, if I don't, then I am making a mockery of my salvation and it can be lost, or possible it still wasn't mine until I made a total commitment to Jesus by committing to act like Him (or at least, try to). I need to believe in Jesus and then act as Jesus, or as James put it, I'm no different than the demons. My good works and my faith in Jesus completes my total commitment as a Christian. I apologize if I'm making this more complicated than it is, and I do greatly appreciate your help. But I am a little bit confused. Learn |

Hank Thank you for your help. Could you explain what you mean in the last line that - We are saved unto good works, but in no sense by them. Do you mean that by our relationship with Jesus, we want to do good works? But, the relationship and accepting of Jesus must be first. Thank You Learn |

Mommapbs Thank you so much for your time, it truly has been very helpful to me. If I accept Jesus as my Savior, I have salvation. If I sin afterwords, God may discipline me either here on earth or in heaven. As long as I am sorry for committing this sin, it will be forgiven, again and again and again - because I am human and I am going to make the same mistakes over and over (sometimes). If the time ever comes in which, for whatever reason and whatever type, I sin and I refuse to feel remorse for committing this sin. Over and over again - will God ever refuse to grant me salvation. Thank you so much for working with me. Learn |

Mommapbs I understand that our faith in God must be first. If a person believes they are saved and they see an old lady who needs help getting across the street: If they help the lady because they believe it is acting as a Christian should - does that have any meaning to God. Or the other way around it, if they chose not to help the lady, even though a Christian should - does that hurt their chances of getting into heaven. Is it even wrong for a Christian not to help.
