1 | Which church to get baptized in? | Acts 2:38 | christianmom22 | 184758
The more we read His Word the better our relationship becomes. A note on Acts 2:38 - Peter is answering the question of what the people should do Now that they Believe. Read the verses that lead up to it and it isn't so misleading. It is definitely true that Jesus is our only way to salvation, but we are also instructed to be baptized. We Believe, then we Repent of our sins, Confess Jesus is the Christ, and get Baptised. When we go down into the water we are dying to our old self (our old life of sin) and come up again as Jesus did when he rose from the dead. So we start a new life In Christ. And that is just the beginning! We continue to repent of sins the rest of our lives, but thats ok as long as we are truly repentant. As for the baptism: Not all churches can do an immersion baptism, and I actually don't know of any Methodist around me that do. So if that ends up being what you believe in you may need to go somewhere else to get baptized. I did. And with my Methodist Pastor's blessing too. He didn't mind at all that I would go somewhere else to be baptized and then return to attend at his church. Convictions are very personal things and we are to follow the Holy Spirit and do what we believe he is asking us to do. Do check Scripture, He will never ask us to do anything that is against God. Only Satan will try to deceive us that way. Just be careful, when I was researching it for myself there were some churches that if they baptized you, they automatically made you a member and that may not be for you if you intend to continue going to the same church you are now. But there are churches that believe that baptism is between you and God and that denominational membership is separate, I found one and was baptized in a lake and it was a wonderful experience that I'll never forget. By the way check out Psalm 119 it's long but beautiful. And remember, you don't have to read the whole Bible in order like a novel although you may want to at some point. But the first time through I'd recommend reading through the NT to get a better understanding of Jesus and the example He has left for us to follow. PS: I attended a United Methodist Church in the US for years and the only members who voted were the church council members. So don't worry about the voting just concentrate on your new relationship with God. If you decide to become a member and join the council later Great. Sorry for being so long winded! God Bless |

2 | Is the headcovering literal? (1Cor 11) | 1 Cor 11:5 | christianmom22 | 184719
I realize this is an old thread and maybe no one will even see this but here goes: Arnold noted:"What I've told you is what the custom of the churches is.' But in our day, most churches no longer have this custom, and it is not within our ability to change the customs which are followed. So, you can't be expected to be the only woman to wear a head covering in your church. If you want to, that's fine. But I would say you, personally, are not required to do so because the church is not following the custom." Its true that most christian churches no longer use headcoverings for women. But there are several church groups that still do, although they may be hard to find in some areas. I became convicted in the spring of 2006 that if God inspired Paul to say the things he said, and he said that a covering was important, and that it was a separate covering besides the hair (by studing the two different words translated into 'covering' in this chapter) and also that Paul begins 1 Cor by addressing "2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, WITH ALL WHO IN EVERY PLACE CALL ON THE NAME OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, their Lord and ours" because of those reasons I believed that it was to all believers in all times, and because I've been told that God never changes. I then believed that I needed to wear a covering too. At that time I was attending a denomination that did not believe it was necessary but I wore it anyway. And I was still accepted and loved and no one ever questioned by right to wear it. My family has since moved on, and has been blessed by finding MANY other families and congregations who still hold to this belief. And no I do not think poorly of women who cut their hair or don't wear a covering. God listened to my prayers before and he hears them now also. But I've also seen for myself that it is a clear and very noticable 'symbol' not only for angels but also for mankind, because when I'm out in public people automatically treat me different now. They see the covering and show respect, NOT for me but for God. |

I'm not sure if this will help but www.BibleGateway.com has an online searchable Bible available in 35 languages, maybe they will have one you can use. As for the number of books in a Bible: The Catholic Bibles have more books than the Protestant Bibles because they contain the books considered as Apocrypha. You can look up a basic explanation of it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_apocrypha |

4 | Which church to get baptized in? | Acts 2:38 | christianmom22 | 184698
Praise God that you have the desire to be Baptized. Although I would be careful where you chose to be baptized. The Scripture I really wanted to highlight was: Acts 2:37-39 37Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" 38Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39"For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself." Some denominations consider baptism as automatically making you a member of their church and not just as becoming part of Christ's Church and His body of believers. Some will baptize you and then it's up to you if you just want to attend or become a member. Also, different denominations have different beliefs as to what baptism is. Such as if infants should be baptized and why or why not, or if a person should be old enough (called the age of accountability) to actually believe in Christ themselves and repent of their sins and then be baptized. Some believe in immersion, some in pouring and some sprinkling with water. BibleGateway.com is an excellent site for looking up a word in different Bible translations to find all the occurances and study the Scriptures. Just go to their site and type in Baptize in the keyword search area and specifically read through the verses in the Book of Acts. See what you believe Baptism is, then find a church that believes what you do. But please make this a decision based on what God is leading you to believe and not just a quick thing to do because your dating someone. It's much more than that. And if you end up getting married later you can still decide as a couple where you will attend church. Your new friends should be happy for you no matter where you decide to get Baptized. |
