3 In Memory of Johnny Farese (1956-2014) 1 Cor 9:26 DocTrinsograce 239783
"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do, I should do. And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do." --Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909)

6 Prayer Request Bible general Archive 4 DocTrinsograce 228727
  Prayer request from a friend:

"Gwen is a CDH baby. Her diaphragm did not close properly and her intestines and stomach are in her chest cavity, impeded proper development of heart and lungs. One lung was developed fine but it has collapsed twice (the other lung is virtually useless). The machine she is on (in a specialty hospital 300 miles away from us [her grandparents]) was beating her heart, breathing for her and circulating her blood, taking out the used blood, removing the carbon dioxide, oxygenating it and warming it and recirculating it. This began when she was born 6/25/11. These babies only have a 50/50 chance of survival. Today, she is beating her own heart and she is down to 70 percent O2. but she still needs to gain strength to survive corrective surgery."

Thank you.

8 Doing for Others Bible general Archive 4 DocTrinsograce 216082
Recently I heard someone on a radio program asked if he was religious. He said that he was not religious at all. However, he said he believed in karma. When asked to expand on that, he said that he believed that the greatest rewards in life were achieved when doing things for others. "In fact, the more selfless the act, the great the reward."

Now, let me ask this: Thinking Biblically, what is the fundamental error revealed by this statement?

Note to all Forum users - When you write a post, whether a question, answer or note, press the submit button ONLY ONCE. Otherwise you will create multiple entries of the same post. This is particularly confusing when you ask a question, because it usually results in more than one thread being created for the same question. This makes it difficult for even seasoned users to follow the sequence of answers and notes involving your question and well nigh impossible for newcomers to follow. So please remember, press the submit button only once and be patient while your submission is being processed. ...... 11 Theological Term: Theotokos Luke 1:31 DocTrinsograce 155937
The term "Theotokos" is a Greek word which means "God bearer" or "Mother of God." It refers to a point of doctrine affirmed in the Council of Calcedon in 451 AD.

As a point of discussion, tell me what you think of Mary, the mother of Jesus, being designated as "the Mother of God." Please explain your answer.

Thank you!

12 Please Pray for Lionheart 1 Thess 5:25 DocTrinsograce 149139
  Dear brothers and sisters,

Please pray for Lionheart. He was released from the hospital today. However, he phases a battery of tests over the next few weeks. Over the last couple of years, he has suffered from very serious heart ailments. Please join me in prayer that Lionheart will strongly sense the presence of the Lord, and that God will be greatly glorified during this time of affliction. Thank you!

13 National Day of Prayer 2 Chr 7:1 DocTrinsograce 147461
Having posted this about a fortnight ago, and receiving now responses, I will post it again as a question. Thank you.

"The grand object in prayer is to be, that the Holy Spirit may be poured down on our ministers and churches, that sinners may be converted, the saints edified, the interest of religion revived, and the name of God glorified. At the same time remember, we trust you will not confine your requests to your own societies (i.e. churches) or to your own immediate connection (i.e. denomination); let the whole interest of Redeemer be affectionately remembered, and the spread of the gospel to the most distant parts of the habitable globe be the object of your most fervent requests. We shall rejoice if any other Christian societies of our own or other denomination will unite with us, and do now invite them most cordially to join heart and hand in the attempt.

"Who can tell what the consequences of such an united effort in prayer may be! Let us plead with God the many gracious promises of His word, which relate to the future success of His gospel. He has said, 'I will yet for this be inquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them, I will increase them with men like a flock' (Ezek. 36:37). Surely we have love enough for Zion to set apart one hour at a time, twelve times in a year, to seek her welfare." --John Sutcliff 1784

Dear Friends,

There are many obstacles this year to the National Day of Prayer preparations that take place in our community. Clearly there are challanges brought by the Enemy, and many other contributing factors. To date, we have managed to keep it a soldily Christian time of prayer. Would you -- brothers and sisters in the Lord -- please pray with us and for us that God will provide, strength, leadership, laborers, and opportunities to continue this year to His glory.

14 Falling to Temptation is Being Deceived James 1:14 DocTrinsograce 147042
Kris Lundgaard writes, "The essence of temptation is deceit - to be tempted and to be deceived are the same thing." What do you think of this statement?
15 "Law" is a Metaphor? Rom 7:23 DocTrinsograce 146949
I just finished reading the very short work entitled "The Enemy Within" by Kris Lundgaard. (It is a very good read, and reads quite easily. (Well, easily in the sense of the language... difficult in the sense of how it made me look squarely into the face of my Adamic nature.) I recommend it to anyone.)

Lundgaard argues that Paul is using the word "law" (translated as "principle" in verse 21) in this verse and following as a metaphor. This gave me pause. Checking various commentators, I find general -- though not explicit -- agreement.

I'm interested in the various opinions of my fellow forum members regarding how Paul uses this word in this context. Thank you.

16 Alms Giving, Fasting, and Praying Matt 6:1 DocTrinsograce 145540
In the teaching of chapter six of Matthew, Christ discusses three activities: Alms giving, fasting, and prayer. It seems to me that Alms giving is focusing on others, fasting is focusing (not in a bad way) on one's self, and prayer is focusing on God. Was there any other particular reason that Christ might have chosen these three activites? Are they intended to be of equal importance in some way? Please let me know if you have any insights into these questions on this particular passage. Thank you!
17 Psalms Targum Psalm DocTrinsograce 145544
Has anyone ever used the Psalms Targum in a study of the Psalms? If anyone is familiar with targumic sources, I'd be interested in hearing their opinions. Thank you!
18 Is music amoral? Is 5:20 DocTrinsograce 143110
Thank you, brother Ed for the music reference passages.

How do these passages weigh in on the question: "Is sound capable of moral influence? Does music alone, with or without lyrics, carry and communicate moral value? Is music amoral (i.e., does God have no opinion about music)?"

In Him, Doc
19 Does the Word say anything about music? Is 5:20 DocTrinsograce 143095
Recent comments in the forum have me curious about the opinions of others on the subject of music.

Is sound capable of moral influence? Does music alone, with or without lyrics, carry and communicate moral value? Is music amoral (i.e., does God have no opinion about music)? Is there scripture that weighs in on this issue one way or another?

Please note that the questions have nothing to do with worship music. I'd appreciate scriptural input on the narrow subject of the questions themselves.

20 Is there intelligent life on earth? John 17:17 DocTrinsograce 142915
Oh my goodness... I've never seen anything as utterly dumb as this. Zondervan has a new paraphrase. And I thought all the other paraphrases were dumb! It is called "The Word on the Street."

Look how Genesis 2:23-24 is "paraphrased"

“Whoa! Now we’re talking!” says Adam. “She’s like me . . . only not.
Same bones, same skin, same shape . . . only not. She’s . . . uh . . . sexy.
If I’m ‘man’, she’s . . . uh . . . ‘woman’.”
