181 | World Peace | Ps 2:1 | Rowdy | 122800
I tend to agree with you. As confirmation of your thought, Jesus stated as follows in Matt 24:3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?" 4And Jesus answered and said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in My name, saying, "I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. 6And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all[1] these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of sorrows. 9"Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. 10And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. Personally, I don't think it's within the capacity of mankind to know true peace for very long. Only God and His Son could possibly effect peace on this earth and of course that's not going to happen until His 2nd coming. God bless all who look forward to His coming again. --Rowdy |

182 | An Admission of an Atheist | Ps 53:1 | Rowdy | 132145
I guess almost everybody has heard the joke about the man who waits to be saved after he gets stuck on his porch when a flood invades his yard. He turns down neighbors driving by and offering him a means of escape. He claims God will rescue him. Finally he goes to the rooftop where he declines both a boat and a helicopter saying the same thing. Then he dies and asks God why did he not rescue him. God's famous reply: "I sent your neighbors in a car and then a boat and a helicoptor. Why did you turn them away?" Just because an atheist turns a blind eye to all the wonderful evidence in the world proving the existance of God, that doesn't mean that the evidence disappears or negate the fact that God is alive and well. 184 | Shout to the (r)Rock of our salvation? | Ps 95:3 | Rowdy | 122933
From your post: But in "working out" my salvation and my faith system, I know that there was no strange god that came to earth. This Jesus was not just a man. He came as light but was the Light of the world. He is our rock, our refuge, our stronghold; but He is also our Rock. Which version do you go with? Does it matter? Are not both of them correct, rock and Rock? My answer: As I've stated a couple of times, anytime we (in my opinion) refer to one of the Godhead as you've done, I would suggest capitalizing so I would not only capitalize Rock. I would've included "our Refuge, our Stronghold." I'm afraid I can't recall a specific verse commanding this practice. Indeed apparently the Hebrew and Greek language didn't even allow for such practice as capitalizing but it's an English language thing. But in accordance with our understanding the reverence due to our Father, I do it whenever possible. If in doubt, I'd suggest going ahead and capitalizing it, just to be safe. God bless. --Rowdy |

185 | where is the holy spirit | Ps 139:7 | Rowdy | 116319
I guess I have to agree with both of you. Like it's been cited in the discussion, there are verses that clearly depict these 3 beings as separate and distinct. Then there are other verses throughout the Bible like as in the creation of man in "our image." So the bottom-line conclusion is the very quandry that befuddles all mankind. The Godhead, Father, Son and Holy Ghost ARE very definitely distinct and separate from each other. AND they are just as definitely one, a complete whole with each other. There is no perfect understanding of this as there's no one passage that I could cite to support this conclusion. It's just fact as far as I'm concerned. The actual "how" and "why," we will have to wait until we get to Heaven to find out the answers to those questions. God bless you both for bringing a fine job of proving this point. |

I'm just in agreement with you. None of us know for certain how this Trinity thing works both ways. Our earthly mathematics just don't add up but we'll get re-educated in Heaven. Hope to see ya there. God bless.
187 | Practical Application Skill | Ps 141:3 | Rowdy | 120321
My only response would be to quote from James 3. James is a very practical book and especially useful to modern christians in this day and age. Here he warns about the very dangerous tongue and encourages us to seek after Godly wisdom to control it. More or less the same kind of guidance from your verse above. God bless. --Rowdy
188 | Might it be fear? | Prov 1:29 | Rowdy | 120786
Just to give this thread some balance, I would offer the following verses: Col 1:10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 1 Tim 1:6 For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, Titus 3:14 Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful. Heb 12:11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. So, we must conclude our God and Father does expect us to restrain ourselves from judging one another as we can't know what goes on in a person's heart and mind, but we are expected "to be our brother's keeper." From the verses above, we can conclude we should love one another to take notice when a fellow christian is NOT producing fruit and talk to him, trying to find out if we can assist him in this area. We should remember Ja 5:13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

189 | Can you explain this phenomenon? | Prov 1:29 | Rowdy | 120878
I can only guess that almost everyone has heard the analogy about the glass filled with a portion of water. Some looking at the glass say it's half empty while others say it's half full. Basically, it boils down to a matter of perspective. Do we plan to consume or deplete that balance of water or do we anticipate filling the vacant portion of the glass with our potential? Two men in prison, one looks out the window, sees the mud, the dirty conditions of the ground below and wonders just how long is he going to be kept there. The other looks up into the sky and dreams of plans he hopes to pursue upon getting out. So many times throughout our lives the altitude of that life is dependent on our attitude. Do we let our difficulties get us down like that of poor Judas and give up or do we take a quick self-inspection like Peter, dust ourselves off and become one of the greatest leaders of men of all time? The freedom of choice is given to all of us by God AND He promises He'll help us IF we'll knock, He'll open; if we'll ask, He'll answer; if we'll seek, He'll help us find. Hope this is helpful and God bless. I really appreciate your starting and wrapping up a good thread of discussion. --Rowdy |

190 | parenting | Prov 22:6 | Rowdy | 111460
I like the christian slant as reflected in most of Dr. James Dobson's books. He and his staff have some very practical and Bible based strategies for dealing with today's kids in a very, very difficult world. My two boys are grown now and on their own but we had our struggles. The single bit of advice that I would offer is the tremendous strength that comes from a united couple, husband and wife, father and mother. They must be united first of all with alligence to the same God and worship together in the same precious faith. Second, they must agree to appear completely united in front of their kids and disagree in love and out of earshot of those kids. Finally, never stop praying and seeking after God's advice from His Word AND His earthly appointed spiritual leaders, the elders in your church. It pays to show your spouse and your kids that you have an open mind AND an open heart. It does wonders when you mess up and make a mistake with your kids, for you as a parent to make a sincere apology to that child. That's all I can think of at this moment. God bless. |

191 | Can unbelievers pray to God? | Prov 28:9 | Rowdy | 133210
I would have to say in Cain's situation, he did emphatically believe in God. How could anyone deny such a thing? He held personal, one-on-one conversations with him. And apparently, it looks like Cain had learned his lesson and had decided to change his ways. He may have led a Godly life after receiving his sentence. None of us can possibly know. When a sinner "reaches the bottom" of his addiction to sin, then he has two choices continue his dreary path to Hell or look up to God, repent and pray to God and ask for mercy. I'd like to think God hears such a prayer. BUT God "is not mocked." If he knows in our heart(s) that we really have no intention of changing our sinful ways, the scriptures clearly depict the fact that he won't listen. Once again, this kind of attitude shows a lack of belief. Remember even "the devil believes in God and trembles." Hope this helps. God bless. Rowdy |

192 | Personification seen in Judas | Prov 28:17 | Rowdy | 113878
That's one of the wonderful things we marvel at in the Bible: the number of contrasts. Judas vs Peter. Both had their weaknesses and stumbled. One killed himself after betraying the Son of God and the other is given the keys to the Kingdom of God and preaches the first Gospel sermon. Saul vs David. Both had a special appointment from the Holy Spirit. Saul gave into temptation and followed his own judgment, violating God's. David did the same, give into lust, committed murder but repents and became "a man after God's heart" and became one of Israel's greatest kings. Yes, we have a similar contrast going on in all of us. The same struggle as reflected by Paul in Rom 7. We all face the struggles of life and all the temptations that go with it. The big question for us every day is "How do we deal with these struggles, with or without God's help?" I'm glad you saw the movie. It's great. I'm looking forward to adding the DVD to our library. God bless. |

193 | Where was Ecclesiastes written | Ecclesiastes | Rowdy | 118764
Eccl 1:1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. If we use deductive reasoning, it appears pretty clear that this Book of Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon since he was the only son of David who was also a King of Jerusalem. But I will agree with you about the book itself. It does seem to wander from topic to topic without a whole lot of organization. The book seems to be filled with a tremendous amount of wisdom and on the assumption that Solomon was the author, we might begin to see why his life was cut short in spite of having God on his side early in life. I'm thinking that Solomon had so much wisdom that it was too much for him and his life of Godliness got away from him. He let all his wives and concubines draw him away from his God. To have such a wonderful start and end up such a tragedy. But then again, we know that God shows us all... even when it means recording the bad along with the good on the heros of the Bible. Just thought I'd throw this in. God bless. --Rowdy |

194 | Purpose in Ecclesiastes and Jeremiah | Eccl 3:1 | Rowdy | 117528
I like to think of all the lives that live on this planet now, as well as the past and present as God's mosaic. Each one of us has a very specific purpose in this mosaic. Our lives might be rather quiet and reserve or they might be loud and haughty. We might not have a relationship with God at all or hopefully we allow God's light to shine through our lives, our words and our ever action. It's all up to us just as in our Lord's parable about men with various talents. We all have great potential and can be whatever we choose to be. To benefit most from this perspective, we must allow the Lord be the Potter and we the clay. We should study His Word every day and be in a constant state of mind given to prayer. All we do must be seen to hold up our small portion of that mosaic and all the worries and burdens of the world should be given over to Him instead of our "obsessing" with them. Thank God for His Grace and love...He's even anxious to forgive if we'll just ask. Good question and God bless. |

195 | How I first came to Christ | Eccl 3:14 | Rowdy | 108237
I'd like to add my two cents worth. Yes, I agree with you all christians need to see ourselves as advancing the cause of Christ but the most important aspect of Christianity is love, God's kind of love, Agape love, described in 1 Cor 13. Then when we add the fruits of the spirit which is so desparetly needed in this world, God's light will shine through us and His Son's kingdom will be advanced. Remember, we need to see things as God sees them. He's the One we got to please on Judgement Day. Finally, when you get to be my age, you begin to appreciate those individuals in the world who foster an atmosphere of tolerance and patience, especially with God's family members are concerned. Let me know what you think. Thanks for sharing. |

196 | Would someone explain Isaiah 6. | Is 6:1 | Rowdy | 110348
I would agree with most everything in your answer except for the portion about the stump of tree. I would refer you to Paul's Letter to the Romans, Chap 15. Here Paul concludes that the remnant from that tree is God's very own Son, Jesus Christ. This is consistent with most of the OT. Throughout the history of the Israelite nation, God kept helping and blessing a remnant of His family so His Son could be born in accordance with the promise He made to Abraham. It was this remnant or root of Jesse, His Son who came to earth to die for the sins of everyone and provide the utlimate sacrifice, taking our place in God's perfect world of justice and redemption. I don't really believe the Jewish nation has anything to do with any special recognition or any other function in this Christian age. Jews should be treated just like they were in the first century; they can become christians just like you and me. God turned His back forever on the Isrealites as a nation. No one nation, not even the USA can claim any special relationship with him, only His children through the blood of His Son can claim that special relationship of fatherhood with God as Father and Jesus Christ as the saviour. Remember our God is a Spirit and we as His children must look forward to giving up this physical world and graduate to the next world, hopfully covered by the blood of Christ. Otherwise we fall into the hand of God, woefully unprepared. God bless. |

197 | Is it sin to smoke a cigarette? | Is 44:1 | Rowdy | 114084
I realize Paul's instructions to the Corinthians is about sexual immorality but it sets a basic principle about our bodes in general. 1 Cor 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. If you'll check with any reformed ex-smoker or ex-drug user, they'll all tell you the same thing. That "stuff" in the human body becomes a monster, controlling your every waking moment. Indeed to most, it becomes a god so it most CERTAINLY IS a sin in our Father's eyes. I know this subject so well, not through experience as I have taken a few puffs of a cirgaret once in my life, many decades ago but my father was addicted and he's told me many times about how bad it got and the after affects to this day. If this is not enough, read again the scriptures below and tell me you can all in good conscience tell us that you'll be able to meet God at Judgment Day with a cirgaret in your hands or in your mouth. Yes, I know these verses are about eating but don't you see the folks in the 1st century didn't know anything about smoking tobacco. They did know about drinking alcohol to excess and that is also condemned so again the principle is quite clear. Rom 14:22 The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin. Please, I would beg you, DON'T give encouragement to anyone who is hooked on this junk and let him think God won't hold them accountable. We need to help educate people like this and love their souls enough to tell them the truth. I do hope you'll reconsider. There are far more damaging, long term effects than just the image you mentioned. God bless you in your study. |

Naturally, I'm assuming your post is directed to me instead of Gratefully Dead, as it contains most of the words from my post. (For future reference, it helps if you click on the post of whom you are directing your reply. But no harm done.) I realize that the Bible doesn't come out clearly and specifically condemn smoking per sae. But it is very clear that it is condemned by God so you see it's not I that is condemning this act, it's God. I'm merely allowing God's true light of truth shine through me just Peter and John when they were told by city officials to hush their preaching; what did they say? "Who are we to obey men or God?" We can and should do no more and no less. In reference to the other points of your message, I don't agree. God certainly does NOT condemn the consumption of alcohol IF it's not abused to excess. Same for any drug. The key here is moderation and what is it being used for. If for healing, good; if for an escape, not good at all. As I mentioned in my post, we should do all with complete faith as if we're doing a particular act in the actual physical prescence of God as that's the standard He'll be judging us. And of course no one can possibly defend any of these kind of abusive activities under such a standard. Now, please don't misunderstand. I know several members in my own congregation who are battling that awful monster of tobacco as you are. Their prayer is to get away from it but they slip up and give in ocassionally. That's where God's grace kicks in and covers us as His children. As long as we're sincerely trying our best to stay in God's good graces and beg forgiveness from Him through prayer when we fall short, His grace covers for our sins. I hope this is clear and God richest blessings on you. |

I provide scriptures to support my statement and you criticize. I make statements w/o scriptures and you criticize. I'm confused. Why don't you take a second look at my posts on this subject and present a logical statement that clearly OPPOSES the overall sentiment of my post. I do hope you're going to be a little more objective to my participation on this Forum. But as always I pray God blesses you with patience and tolerance for your fellow man and our weaknesses. Let me "hear" from you. Thanks. |

I agree it's a conclusion that is drawn from God's Word on my part. But I do think it is a solid conclusion, one that is in agreement with the vast majority of christians, especially those who know their Bibles. BUT I don't want to cause a large controversy over this. I'm satisfied that those on the Forum who needed these words of encouragement and truth will get them from the few posts as cited. Believe it or not, I'm not striving to add or take anything away from God's Word. I'm just like you and the rest of those participating on this Forum. Yes, I too have my weaknesses and they're probably too many for a christian of my age and my background. But I think we all have to recognize the tremendous gift of grace from God above. But in order to qualify for that gift on a daily basis, we have to maintain a constant relationship with God and let him know through prayer that we really do intend to reform or repent from our sins every day. Now, don't get me wrong. When and if we give up on God for a period of time, it's easy to get back in His family and ask God's family for forgiveness, encouragement and support. This tenuious relationship with God is fragile only because we as humans have a difficult time being truly faithful. Again, we need to keep uppermost in our minds it's only by the Grace of God that any of us make it to Heaven. I hope this makes my position clear and God bless. Thanks for your post. |
