3521 | Walk in the Light | 1 John 1:6 | Makarios | 24940
Walk in the Light *********************** Genuine salvation produces a change in those who accept Jesus into their hearts. We are no longer slaves to the desires of the sinful nature that we are born with, and we bear the fruit of a changed life! John writes this knowing that the false teachers claimed to have fellowship with God, yet they did not recognize their own sin. An unbeliever who sins is a creature sinning against his Creator. A Christian who sins is a child sinning against his Father. The unbeliever sins against the law; the believer sins against love. If God shows you sin in your life, then you must confess that sin, asking for God's help to overcome it. Christians should become more like Christ and our actions should prove that we unite in love as the church of God. Verses 6-10 contain three contrasts between words and works, or saying one thing and doing another. Following each contrast is the result of the action. "If we say:" The first false claim is to have fellowship with God while failing to reflect His moral character. Walk refers to a way of life or daily practice. To walk in darkness means to live contrary to the moral character of God, to live a sinful life. To claim fellowship with God without living a moral life or practicing the truth is to live a lie, since God cannot compromise His holiness to accommodate sin. - Nolan |

Greetings Mommapbs! Thank you for your response. It is very likely that walking in darkness would be a result of an erring belief that is contrary to the Word of God, since the Word of God points us to the Light. Many of the beliefs in today's religious cults are examples of walking in darkness because they lead people to hold to non-scriptural and anti-scriptural beliefs. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3524 | True fellowship through our walk | 1 John 1:7 | Makarios | 26156
True fellowship through our walk *********************************************** 1 John 1:7 was written as a response to its preceding verse, which describes walking in darkness. These two verses show the contrast in the two lifestyles that are described. A genuine Christian does not walk in darkness but only in the light (2 Cor. 6:14; Eph. 5:8; Col. 1:12,13), and cleansing from sin continually occurs! (v.9) We live in obedience to God's commands when we walk in the light! And we have fellowship with other believers, with God Himself, and continual cleansing from sin (since walking in the light brings to light other sins that need cleansing). We live in such a way that one is enlightened by the truth of who God is. When our conduct reflects God's character, then real fellowship with other Christians and with God is possible. Our fellowship with God is dependent upon walking in God's light! Only the blood of Jesus Christ can cleanse us from all sin, making it possible for imperfect believers to have fellowship with a holy God. Since those walking in the light share in the character of God, they will be habitually characterized by God's holiness (3 John 11), which indicates their true fellowship with Him (James 1:27). This contrast of light and darkness continues through 1 John 1:5-2:17.. - Nolan |

3526 | Confession of Sin | 1 John 1:8 | Makarios | 26161
Confession of Sin ************************** "If we say that we have no sin.." This is the second false claim (the first was in verse 6)- that we have no sin. This claim contends that our sin nature does not exist! If we say this, then we deceive ourselves (2 Chr. 6:36; Eccl. 7:20; Rom. 3:23; John 9:41). If someone never admits to being a sinner, then salvation cannot result (Matt. 19:16-22). To have no sin is to have no need of a Savior, which would make the coming of Jesus unnecessary. The truth is in God's revelation, which says just the opposite! "Jesus said to them, 'If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.'" (John 9:41) Therefore, a believer in Christ who has true fellowship with God (walking in the light), will acknowledge and repent of the sinful nature that dwells within them, which is revealed by the light. - Nolan |

3530 | He is Faithful in Forgiveness! | 1 John 1:9 | Makarios | 28450
He is Faithful in Forgiveness ************************************** God has made a commitment to His people, and He is faithful! All throughout the Old Testament He directed His people continually through the prophets to come back to Him and to worship Him. When we truly confess our sins to Him, we are saying the same thing about sin that God does, and we are seeing sin, in a sense, from His point of view. The Lord is just and faithful and He will respond to those who confess their sins in a way that is in accordance with his nature and faithfulness. He has promised to forgive us and to restore our communion with God by cleansing us of our sin (Heb. 10:22-23). Forgiveness and fellowship within the family of God is restored when we confess. The false teachers that John is referring to would not admit their sin, but the genuine Christian would not only admit their sin, they forsook it (Psalm 32:3-5; Proverbs 28:13). Confession of sin characterizes a genuine Christian, and God is faithful to cleanse us of our sins (Isaiah 1:18), making us whiter than snow! - Nolan |

3532 | All have sinned | 1 John 1:10 | Makarios | 28462
All have sinned ************************* John again confronts the Gnostic's denial that their immoral actions were sinful. Even believers sin. If we deny past sin and present guilt, we are deceiving ourselves, mocking God, and not walking in the light. There was only one Man who knew no sin (2 Cor. 5:21). Since God has said that all people are sinners (Psalm 14:3; 51:5; Isaiah 53:6; Jeremiah 17:5,6; Romans 3:10-19,23; 6:23), to deny that fact is to blaspheme God with a slander that defames His name. - Nolan |

Greetings Serenetime, Thank you for responding to my note. If there is one thing in your response that I agree with, it is that we are saved by grace alone, and I most certainly agree with that! (Ephesians 2:8-10) Blessings to you, Nolan |

3535 | We have an Advocate! | 1 John 2:1 | Makarios | 32282
We have an Advocate! ******************************** Jesus Christ is our Advocate! The Father's one and only Son, who speaks in our behalf! Jesus will be our Helper as we seek justification before God, and He and the Holy Spirit will never leave us (John 14:16). Satan, of course, is our accuser (Zech. 3; Rev. 12:10), making our need for the Son of God, the Advocate, all that much greater! In Him alone is salvation, since there is no other name by which we can be saved (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). And the Lord, our Advocate, not only represents us and is sympathetic to our concerns, but He also guarantees our acquittal (Heb. 4:14-16), even in light of all of our accusations! And all we need to do is to trust in Him. Praise the Lord! Makarios |

3537 | The 'Kosmos' in 1 John | 1 John 2:2 | Makarios | 26117
Greetings Brother Tim! I have recently been studying 1 John 2:2 and here is a bit of commentary about this verse from a few sources.. "2:2 ...Christ died for the sins of the whole world, the entire human race." [Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible] "for those of the whole world. Forgiveness through Christ's atoning sacrifice is not limited to one particular group only; it has worldwide application (see John 1:29). It must, however, be received by faith (see John 3:16). Thus this verse does not teach universalism (that all people ultimately will be saved), but that God is an impartial God." [Zondervan's NASB Study Bible] "...The sacrifice of Jesus' sinless life is so effective that it can supply forgiveness for the whole world (see 2 Cor. 5:14,15,19; Heb. 2:9). Christ's death is sufficient for all, but efficient only for those who believe in Christ. Not everyone will be saved, but Jesus offers salvation to all (see Rev. 22:17)." [The Nelson NKJV Study Bible] "for the whole world. This is a generic term, referring not to every single individual, but to mankind in general. Christ actually paid the penalty only for those who would repent and believe. A number of Scriptures indicate that Christ died for the world (John 1:29; 3:16; 6:51; 1 Tim. 2:6; Heb. 2:9). Most of the world will be eternally condemned to hell to pay for their own sins, so they could not have been paid for by Christ. The passages which speak of Christ's dying for the whole world must be understood to refer to mankind in general (as in Titus 2:11). "World" indicates the sphere, the beings toward whom God seeks reconciliation and has provided propitiation. God has mitigated His wrath on sinners temporarily, by letting them live and enjoy earthly life (see note on 1 Tim. 4:10). In that sense, Christ has provided a brief, temporal propitiation for the whole world. But He actually satisfied fully the wrath of God eternally only for the elect who believe. Christ's death in itself had unlimited and infinite value because He is Holy God. Thus His sacrifice was sufficient to pay the penalty for all the sins of all whom God brings to faith. But the actual satisfaction and atonement was made only for those who believe (cf. John 10:11,15; 17:9,20; Acts 20:28; Rom. 8:32,37; Eph. 5:25). The pardon for sin is offered to the whole world, but received only by those who believe (cf. 4:9,14; John 5:24). There is no other way to be reconciled to God." [MacArthur Study Bible] I thought that it would be interesting to present the different theological stances on this verse that each of the Study Bibles represented takes.. I believe that every stance is represented here, but I like Ryrie myself.. :-) Blessings to you, Nolan |

3539 | The Substitute! | 1 John 2:2 | Makarios | 34112
The Substitute ******************************* God's righteous wrath against the sinfulness of humanity is appeased by the sacrifice of His one and only Son! Jesus Christ, the Son, has taken our place by accepting the penalty for our sins (Isaiah 53:6), and by enduring public disgrace in the process, even though He Himself was completely without sin! The forgiveness of sins through Christ's atoning sacrifice is not limited to one particular group, and the invitation of Christ is open to all! (Rev. 22:17) Christ's atoning sacrifice has worldwide application (John 1:29, Hebrews 2:9, 2 Cor. 5:14-15,19), but it is only efficient for those who believe in Christ! You have to believe that Jesus is Lord, repent of your sins, and confess Him as Lord of your life, and you will be saved! - Makarios (A Continuing Study through 1 John by Makarios) |
