1 Judges 19:29 When he entered his house, Judg 19:29 greenc 131996
  Hi,
Why did he cut his concubine's body in twelve pieces and sent her throughout the territory of Israel? What was the purpose?
Judges 19:29
2 Judges 19:29 When he entered his house, Judg 19:29 james210 131997
The Levite explains that the reason for sending parts of his concubine out is because of the crime that was committed It seems he wanted all of Israel to know what happened.

Judges 20:6 says, "I took my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel, for they have committed abomination and [wicked] folly in Israel."

It also seems to be a call to arms for Israel to inact justice on those who committed this act. The act wasn't just against the concubine, but against all of Israel. This may be why he sent out twelve pieces - one for each tribe (although, the Benjamites would not cooperate and turn over the criminals).

Judges 20:8-10 explains...
"And all the people arose as one man, saying, Not any of us will go to his tent, and none of us will return to his home. But now this we will do to Gibeah: we will go up by lot against it, And we will take ten men of 100 throughout all the tribes of Israel, and 100 of 1,000, and 1,000 out of 10,000, to bring provisions for the men, that when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin they may do to them according to all the [wicked] folly which they have committed in Israel."
