A question to ponder: Where the midwives referred to in the first chapter of Exodus Egyptian or where they Hebrews/Isrealites?
982 | HEROD AND JOHN THE BAPTIST | NT general Archive 1 | prayon | 19145
The bible tells us (I can't find the scripture sorry) to verify everything we hear by checking it out to see if it lines up with the word of God. Hollywood uses a story (or bible incident) for a movie and then they add to it or take away from it to make it more interesting (they think). This is what happened here. I do not know of anywhere in the bible where it says that Jesus visited John the Baptist when he was in jail.
983 | discuss meaning of Nazirite vow | OT general | prayon | 19140
Greetings easyoke! The only reference to your question I can find comes from the Harpers Bible Dictionary. Nazorites (dedicated or consecrated ones)were men or women who entered a consecrated state upon their own or a parents vow. Both Samuel and Samson were consecrated by vows while still in their mothers wombs. In the NT is is likely that one of the significances attached to Jesus' being called a "Nazarene" is that he too should be viewed as a "Nazirite" in the sense of being consecatated to God from the womb. prayon
984 | shiphra and puah midwifery for today | Exodus | prayon | 19134
At that time Pharaoh was very worried about the Isrealites multiplying in miraclous numbers because he was worried that in any future war since the Isrealites numbered more than the Egyptians they would join the other side and fight against Egypt. His first plan was to put slave masters over them to oppress them. This did not work. So he decided that he would have all the male children killed. He told the Hebrew midwives to kill all the male babies at birth. These 2 women risked their lives going against Pharaohs orders and not killing the babies. That must of taken great courage! Pharaoh was a mighty man. They risked their lives by blantantly lying to Pharaoh about the babies being born before they could get there. They were motivated by the fear of God. Because of their great motivation God rewarded them. Shiphra and Puah can be an example to us today. We can use their example of courage. We should stand for right and go against that which is wrong even if it means giving we might loose our lives. We can also remember that when we do God will bless us abundently as he did Shiphra and Puah. prayon |

985 | does God turn away from anyone? | Heb 13:5 | prayon | 18812
Greetings Little Helper and welcome to the forum! No God never turns His back on anyone. He is always there for anyone who asks Him to be. We can choose to turn our back on Him. I believe that when someone does turn their back on Him, he sheds a tear and then continues to put His messages in their pathway hoping to call them back into his flock. prayon |

987 | Moses prepared for his family how? | Exodus | prayon | 18658
Nolan, my guess is because that Moses was near death and was unable to do it himself. Verse 24 (Exo 4) states that the Lord met him and tried to kill him. Also it could be that Moses did not circumcise his son because Zipporah was against it. However, this could not fit either since the Medianites belonged to the same Abrahamic stock as Isreal, having descended from Abraham's second wife, Keturah. One would assume that they had retained some of the knowledge of the Words of God from Abraham.
988 | Moses prepared for his family how? | Exodus | prayon | 18656
Greetings ronscarpet! I am guessing where you got these questions and if I am correct the forum would be considered a "commentary" which are not supposed to be used until after the lecture. The bible says seek and you will find. The idea behind BSF is to teach us to seek for ourselves and to really study the word of God. I do know just how great the temptation to peek can be though! prayon
989 | The kingdom in Nebuchadnezzars dream? | Dan 2:36 | prayon | 18654
Greetings Alex, His dream symbolized different periods in history. The gold head symbolized the Empire of Babylonian of which Nebuchadnezzar was ruler from 606 BC until 539 BC. The chest and arms which were made of silver represented the Medo-Persian empire which ruled from 539 BC until 331 BC. This kingdom belonged to Nebuchadnezzar's grandson. The Bronze body and thighs represented Alexander the Great who ruled the Grecian Empire from 331 BC to 146 BC. The fourth kingdom represented by the legs of iron was the Roman Empire. Being strong as iron was referring to the great military of the Romans. The times of this Empire are 146 BC until AD 476. As the feet and toes are made of both iron and clay it was to be a divided kingdom. The kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. The stone that was carved out that smashed the clay and iron symbolizes the rock of Jesus Christ. Hope this helps. prayon |

990 | How can i keep my faith running on high? | Rom 10:17 | prayon | 18616
Dear Kent, I am sure that all of us have been through that at one time or another. It helps me, when I feel like that, to meditate or list all the awesome things God has done for unworthy people in the bible. For example Paul (or Saul). He was definetly lacking in the love of Christ category but yet look what God did for him and how God used him. Think about (or list) all the blessings God has heaped on you. How can we loose our faith in a God that has done so much for us? God has brought all of us a mighty long way! Also see Ps. 40:2,3. As for putting the devil under your feet, Resist the devil and he will flee, (James 4:7) Remember also Eph. 6:12-13 - "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood....". prayon |

991 | What's going on? | Revelation | prayon | 18591
Welcome to the forum Eschatoncc, You have every right to be here. We welcome any questions that you may have. This is a forum of God's word, which you seem to know and believe. From your letter I can see that in your heart you are neither agnostic nor an atheist. Your mind just needs to give in to what your heart already knows to be the truth. Proverbs 22:6 says that when you "raise up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it". You were raised in the Catholic faith...... There is nothing we can do to prevent Revelations from coming to pass. The Lord said it would happen and it will, although we know not when. I will refer you to 2Chron 7:14 in answer to your question of what can we do. "If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear them from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land". Pray, my friend, that more people of this world will wake up and see the truth. prayon |

992 | what are latter days and In-Times? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 18589
The latter days are the same as the end times. It is the period just before Christ returns to claim his people and Armegeddon - which ever comes first based on your belief of whether the rapture is pre-trib, trib, or post-trib. (I am assuming you mean End-times instead of IN-times). prayon
993 | What did they do? | Exodus | prayon | 18588
Greetings Nolan, So does that mean that we can suffer hardships by not doing anything to deserve it. And remember that most of our consequences we have to go through are because we chose to do the thing that the consequences are for, the Isrealites did not make any wrong choice. prayon
994 | What did they do? | Exodus | prayon | 18435

998 | Jesus' temptation | John 1:32 | prayon | 17518
Each of the gospels is told by a different person and each of these persons stressed a different aspect of Jesus. Matthew presents Jesus as the mighty king. It emphasizes on the Power of Christ and is presented in a teaching style. Mark presents Jesus as the obedient servant. It emphasizes the service of Christ and is the narrative gospel and is full of action. Luke, who was a doctor, wrote about the Son of Man. His gospel is carefully documented and emphasizes the sympathy of Christ. John's gospel is considered the spiritual gospel and emphasizes the wisdom of Christ. Some did go into the temptation because of these differences and some didn't. prayon |

999 | Where in Bible are verses about Rapture? | 1 Thess 4:13 | prayon | 17516
Greetings Sannon! Matthew 25:3-13 also talks about the rapture in the form of the parable of the 10 bridesmaids.
1000 | Is sex between singles a sin? | 1 Corinthians | prayon | 17515
I would like to refer you to this question asked by "forrest" and answered on Apr 4th: What unmarried sexual acts are sinful? The question reveals a frequent misunderstanding of the role and use of laws, rule, and instructions. You are seeking a rule, so it is helpful to look at the role of rules. 1 Timothy 1:9 says that the law is not made for a righteous person but rather for the lawless and rebellious. While such instruction is still useful to guide and instruct (see 2 Timothy 3:16 and Matthew 5:17-19), it is intended to guide and instruct us into recognizing our sin, the need of a savior, and the offer of grace of Christ. Such instruction leads us to a personal encounter with a living God and a real relationship with that God in the person of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is tasked with guiding us in all truth and being our counselor and helper. See John 14.15ff, 15.26-16.15. When this relationship is established between created and creator, we are no longer under the law of stone but rather under the law of the Spirit and of grace. See Romans 6:14ff, Romans 7:4-6. Now this law of grace and law of the Spirit is much more demanding than the law of stone and its righteousnoess is greater than the righteousness of the law (pharisees). As God dwells within us He transforms us so that His desire becomes our desire, His longing our longing, His heart our heart. We learn of Him and hear Him through His word and hungry and expectant reading and "chewing" or meditation on His word (scripture) and through prayer (speaking and listening), worship (admiration of who He is and expressing our love for Him), and fellowship (He works through His people to reveal Himself). All this being said your question still has very practical aspects. As in ," My boyfriend/girlfriend and I are getting serious and are considering marriage but have not yet decided. There is tremendous pressure to move into areas of physical intimacy which I am not sure are pleasing to God. What guidance is there in scripture as to how far is too far?" But once the question is phrased this way you see that the real issue is not what you can do, but rather what is pleasing to God. If you are asking this question, the answers are much more apparent. Scripture clearly shows that God intended and created our sexuality as a means of establishing and maintaining a committed life long realtionship between a man and woman as a type/example of His desire to have eternal realtionship with us. God even uses the image of the returning Christ as a bridegroom and the church as His bride. Why would you involve yourself in any physical activity which creates a physiological yearning which can not righteously be satisfied (i.e. sexual intercourse outside of marriage). Even other sexual acts involve such intimacy and personal contact as to be violative of the other person (and God's intention) absent a committed life-long relationship (marriage). If I had to carve an answer in stone (God desires to do so in your heart) any intimate sexual contact is violative of God's intention of sexual (and thus spiritual--see 1 Corinthians 6.15-20)realtions. This would include, but not be limited to oral sex, manual sex, masturbation, and "feeling" or petting of the body parts of another. If the relationship is ready for these things, why is not ready for commitment. Do not buy the lie that you need to test before you buy. It is God who makes a proper spouse and it is a lifelong process. |
