41 | Did our first baptism 'not take'? | NT general Archive 1 | newoldstock | 183431
Did our first baptism 'not take'? Should we be baptised more than once? We have many denominations. Some emerse, which I believe is the best way. Some drip, drizzle, wet hand, or pour. If we were originally not emersed, and we change to a denomination that dunks, must we be baptised again by dunking to be qualified to join the church? Jim
42 | Why should I talk to my local congrega? | NT general Archive 1 | newoldstock | 183439
Let me change the question slightly then to why should a person be rebaptised? Why should I talk to my local congregation? Perhaps they are wrong. I see nothing in the bible, which is my authority, that says anyone should be baptised twice. The only case that I can find is Acts 19:1-7 and the first baptism was that of John.
43 | Why should I talk to my local congrega? | NT general Archive 1 | newoldstock | 183455
Hi Doc, Your question of why do I want to be a member there is a good one. The church, pastor, sermons, deeds are wonderful. The only problem that I have is the rebaptizm. Assuming that our first baptism was for real and was a 'believer's baptism', why should we be baptized again because the church does not accept the method by which we were baptized? Is not this causing your brother to stumble? Is this not arguing over the more minor points and missing the Main Thing? It isn't just this church that feels that way. Many baptist churches share this view. My stepson and I have gone through the new member class and I am now a member because I have been immersed. My stepson is being baptized by me in 2 weeks. My wife did not join with us. She loves the church but has a couple of reservations. The #1 probably being immersed when she has already been baptized via sprinkling in the Methodist church. She has accepted Jesus as saviour and lord and is definitly saved. She feels that her first baptism was sincere and sees no need to be now immersed because this church requires it for membership, therefore unless God can change her mind, she will continue to be an attendee while her adult son and I are members. Have all Methodists, Presbyterians, Catholics, Lutherins, etc. been baptized incorrectly? Are they really saved? I hope that this sheds some new light on my question. God bless, Jim.

Hi Kalos, It is nice to be back here and visit with folks like you and Doc again. Your answer is good and so is Doc's (accept for maybe the Ethiopian bible part :-))I will go over your answers with my wife. I agree most with this answer of yours. I will also discuss it with an elder or the pastor as Doc has suggested. God Bless, newoldstock. |

45 | Did Adam and Eve go to heaven? | Gen 1:1 | newoldstock | 93759
I don't think that we can know for sure. I don't recall any bible verse evidence of this, but they sinned and died prior to the Law and to the New Covenant in Christ Jesus. So by what standard were they judged. God punished them, but then clothed them. I think that God forgave them and they are most likely in heaven waiting to greet your class of girls when they eventually go to heaven. God Bless, Jim.

I am sorry that I did not give you verse backup earlier. I posted the answers quickly before dinner and did not have time to look them up for you. They are: Ex 2:3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.(AND) 2 Cor 11:33 and I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and so escaped his hands. God Bless, Jim |

48 | Is Seth really the third child? | Gen 5:4 | newoldstock | 96286
Nephilim means giants, the Hebrew word left untranslated by the Revisers, the name of one of the Canaanitish tribes.
49 | Is Seth really the third child? | Gen 5:4 | newoldstock | 96287
The bible only mentions these three boys by name. The girls were not mentioned. Seth could have been the third boy, but there could have been many daughters between these 3 sons that God did not choose to mention.
50 | tunic of many colors | Gen 37:3 | newoldstock | 101735
The tunic of many colors signified a position of favor, princehood, and birthright - a dramatic way of saying that he was the son to get the birthright. The real idea behind the Hebrew phrase for tunic of many colors is that it was a tunic that extended all the way down to the wrists and ankles, as opposed to one that was shorter. This was not what a working man wore; it was a garment of privilege and status. God Bless, Jim.
51 | Can one who commits suicide be saved? | Ex 20:13 | newoldstock | 106163
This has been a very interesting sub-thread. The UMC that I left after 20 years of membership had 2 pastors that believed that all people would have a chance after death to accept Christ. They believed that all would be saved. It is called Christian Universalism and is the main reason that I left that church.
52 | Why can't I have several wives? | Ex 21:10 | newoldstock | 102387
Headdoc, I dislike assumptions, but indulge me with a couple: 1. With the "handle" of headdoc, I assume that you are the psychological field. 2. I would bet that it is not you, but a patient or two that has raised this question. 3. I believe that your real question is when and why did people change back to monogamy views from polygamy views and is there a biblical reference? I do not know the answer to this question. 4. If your question is "why can't I" and "is God changeble" (which I believe you used to elicit and trigger more "Hits") that question was well answered by Makarios, JustMe, and Hank. |

53 | Pologomy Allowed? | Ex 21:10 | newoldstock | 102448
Please also note that the guy who brought it up-headdoc, also dropped it right after he proposed it! Strings live on even after the originator drops them. Monogamy is God's best for us, but selfish humans had to "muddy the water".
54 | ESV Bible evaluations? | Leviticus | newoldstock | 146020
Now that everyone has had a chance to really use and study the ESV Bible, what is your conclusion? Back in 2002 there were some long threads on it discussing it's quality, long term use and survival as an alternative to the NIV,NKJV, and NASB. What are your more recent thoughts?

Steve, it is interesting to see that you have stayed with the ESV, as you were one of the main posters back in 2002 discussing it.I believe that you had a Navaho translater friend who did not like it. He preferred the Message, if I remember correctly.

59 | How Firm a Foundation | Prov 10:25 | newoldstock | 94537
This is indeed a grand old hymm. I haven't heard it in a longtime as I am in a "praise and worship" church now. Luke 6:48 "he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built."
60 | "He shall be called a Nazarene."? | Matt 2:23 | newoldstock | 95216
I am doing a detailed bible study of Matthew and can not find a reference in the Old Testament for "He shall be called a Nazarene." The Amplified I notice says the ref. is Isa. 11:1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. I don't see how it can be the proper reference. I can't see how I could pull "He shall ge called a Nazanene" from Isa. 11:1. Do you know of any other reference?
