321 | Explain eye for eye/turn cheek? | Matt 5:1 | inmyheart | 60624
One thought on turning the other cheek was to show the other person that you were equal to him. They would slap on the right side of your cheek with the back of their right hand, showing they were superior to the one being hit, but when the victim turned his cheek, left cheek, this would not have the same effect, because it demostrated he was equal to the one hitting him. (38-42) Jesus interprets the law of retribution a. The Mosaic law did teach an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth (Exodus 21:24); but the religious teachers had moved it out of its proper sphere (a principle limiting retribution for the civil government) and put it in the wrong sphere (as an obligation in personal relationships) b. Jesus presents the fullness of this law: "the non-resistance of evil." i. This is a radical command, but not an absolute one: Jesus Himself resisted evil when He turned tables in the temple ii. This principle is also relevant to personal relationships, and not to the proper functions of government in restraining evil (Romans 13:1-4); I must turn my cheek when I am personally insulted (the cultural meaning of a slap on the cheek), but the government has a responsibility to restrain the evil man from physical assault iii. Jesus also displayed the principle behind the law in His trials before the Sanhedrin and Pilate: we are to let God defend our case, not ourselves c. Positively, we are told to take command of evil impositions by making a deliberate choice to give more than we are required i. Roman law commanded Jews (in their Judean occupation) to carry the pack of any Roman soldier, but only for one mile; Jesus is saying "go beyond the one mile required by law and give another mile out of a free choice of love" ii. This is how we change someone's attempt to manipulate us into our free act of love d. The only limit to this kind of sacrifice is the limit that love itself will impose; it isn't love to give into someone's manipulation without our transforming it into a free act of love; it isn't always love to give or to not resist e. Jesus clearly says that we are not to resist the evil person; "we are to resist evil itself at every opportunity." It has been said that Martin Luther King Jr. used this non-violent approach in his equal rights marches. Also, the thought of giving your cloak also when they ask for your coat, was to bring shame to those who ask, because under your cloak was your nakeness. God bless |

324 | Never defend myself or others ag. evil? | Matt 5:39 | inmyheart | 64686
Jesus presents the fullness of this law: the non-resistance of evil. This is a radical command, but not an absolute one: Jesus Himself resisted evil when He turned tables in the temple. This principle is also relevant to personal relationships, and not to the proper functions of government in restraining evil (Romans 13:1-4); I must turn my cheek when I am personally insulted (the cultural meaning of a slap on the cheek), but the government has a responsibility to restrain the evil man from physical assault. Positively, we are told to take command of evil impositions by making a deliberate choice to give more than we are required. Roman law commanded Jews (in their Judean occupation) to carry the pack of any Roman soldier, but only for one mile; Jesus is saying "go beyond the one mile required by law and give another mile out of a free choice of love." The only limit to this kind of sacrifice is the limit that love itself will impose; it isn't love to give into someone's manipulation without our transforming it into a free act of love; it isn't always love to give or to not resist. 325 | What does this verse mean? | Matt 6:7 | inmyheart | 60478
Greetings, "During chapel everyone began to pray in tongues", did that include yourself? Why didn't the Spirit gently tell anyone else? It's not that I doubt you, just curious! Thank you in advance for your reply. God Bless |

326 | What does this verse mean? | Matt 6:7 | inmyheart | 60531
The right way to pray a. The right kind of prayer does not use vain repetition, which is any and every praying which is all words and no meaning, all lips and no mind or heart. i. The Rabbis had sayings like: "Whoever is long in prayer is heard" and "Whenever the righteous make their prayer long, their prayer is heard." ii. One famous Jewish prayer began: "Blessed, praised, and glorified, exalted, and honored, magnified and lauded be the name of the Holy One" iii. When we try to impress God with our many words, we deny who God is: a loving, yet holy Father; instead, we should follow the counsel of Ecclesiastes 5:2: God is in heaven, and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few. This is a commentary from my file, with some thought on Matthew 6:7. You are speaking of a different topic, speaking in tongues. Don't confuse speaking in tongues with hindu chanting. "Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way." 1Corinthians 14:39-40 (NIV). God bless |

328 | Saved but not living for God? | Matt 6:33 | inmyheart | 163349
If you have been saved, why would a person go live in the world, but the word says; Mat 18:12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? Mat 18:13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that [sheep], than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. My friend, whoever you are speaking of, God has given us promises that He will not leave us nor foresake us. As you know the things in the world are not everlasting, the backslider is missing the peace of mind, entering the rest of God, the provisions of life, and not to mention the testimony that of a persons life, reflecting the image of God, that the world is hungry for. God bless you and thank you for the question. inmyheart |

331 | RAVENING WOLVES OF DECEPTION | Matt 7:15 | inmyheart | 62587
It is the same message Paul preached, saying that as believers we are to put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and that we are to put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:22, 24) God bless |

332 | recovery and the bible | Matt 9:12 | inmyheart | 87071
There are many verses of scripture that can be used for addiction, such as Galatians 5:17-20. Are you in recovery? Or are you looking for some encouraging words for a person who is addicted? Please be a little more specific. The Apostle Paul writes: "I do not understand my own behavior; I do not act as I mean to, but I do the things that I hate. Though the will to do what is good is in me, the power to do it is not; the good thing I want to do, I never do; the evil thing which I do not want--that is what I do." Romans 7:14-24. In writing these words, Paul is talking about sin. Theologically, sin is what turns us away from love--away from love for ourselves, away from love for one another, and away from love for God. When I look at this problem psychologically, I see two forces that are responsible: repression and addiction. We all suffer from both repression and addiction. Of the two, repression is by far the milder one. God bless |

333 | If the house is "worthy"? | Matt 10:13 | inmyheart | 51766
Cheryl What is being spoken of here is; How they were to provide for themselves. They should expect God to meet their needs, without taking undue concern for their own needs; but they should expect that God would normally meet their needs through the inspired hospitality of others. those who do receive these disciples can expect to be blessed ("let your peace come upon it"); but those cities who refuse them can expect to be treated as Gentiles (shake off the dust from your feet), and are in grave danger of judgement. Even though the twelve can expect their needs to be met through the people they minister to, they should never require their needs to be met as "payment". The foundational principle is "Freely you have received, freely give." God's blessings Cheryl |

334 | What does Matthew 10:34-35 mean? | Matt 10:34 | inmyheart | 69816
pollywog, In Matthew 10:34-36 it says "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household." In all of Jesus' ministry, it is clear that He cared deeply for the entire human race. There are many incidents where He showed that he cared for families. The incident where He healed Peter's mother-in-law (Matt. 8:14-15), the incident where He raised the ruler's daughter (Matt. 9:24-26), the incident recorded in Luke 7:11-15 where He raised a dead man and presented him to his widowed mother, to name a few. In the message recorded in Matthew 10:34-36 He is simply predicting that anyone who follows Him can expect opposition, sometimes even from his own family. This is obviously referring to cases where the family members choose to continue following evil rather than God. There is no contradiction or discrepancies in the Bible. |

335 | Types of Fornication(Masturbation) | Matt 15:19 | inmyheart | 107293
Spiritual points about masturbation: 1. Masturbation causes you to be "mastered" by sin: The Bible says that there are only two things that we can be a slave to: sin or righteousness. There are no other masters. Paul wrote, "Do you not know that if you yield yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?" (Romans 6:16 NKJV). Which master does masturbation bring us under? In almost every case, it is used to complement lust and the Bible identifies lust as sin in several places. For example, Jesus said in Matthew 5:28, "But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." When you consider that masturbation usually includes thinking about what it would be like to have sex with someone (i.e. lusting) while simulating the physical feeling, its easy to see that it brings us under the master of sin. God does not want people to be mastered by sin. For example, he told Cain, "If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it" (Genesis 4:7 NKJV). Cain let sin rule him by murdering his brother Abel. His life was drastically affected. He lost his job, his peace, his home, and his blessing and spent the rest of his days as a "restless wanderer" (Genesis 4:12). Likewise, we have the same opportunity to choose our master. If we choose sin as our master, our life will bear the fruit that sin brings - i.e. destruction, sorrow, dissatisfaction, death, etc.. If we choose righteousness as our master, we will reap life! Paul wrote: 20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:20-23 NIV 2. Masturbation uses your body as an instrument for sin: Your body is to be presented and used as an instrument for righteousness (not sin). Paul wrote, "Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God" (Romans 6:12-13 NKJV). God can best use us when we keep our "vessels" (body, soul , spirit) free of sin. Paul wrote: "In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart" (2 Timothy 2:20-22 NIV). God bless |

"F.P. prayed over him, then informed me that my boy's healing would progress as my faith grew. That annoyed me, and I've since discovered the falsity of that presumption." Fred Price made a true statement, why didn't you pray for your sons healing? You went to F.P's service and you come out pointing fingers! 337 | Is "slain in the Spirit" biblical? | Matt 16:6 | inmyheart | 90680
HEALING IN THE ATONEMENT Even in our world of advanced medical technologies, there are many diseased individuals living all around us. Many of them suffer constant pain, and some of them do not have the ability to even perform the most ordinary tasks. There are others who endure lesser sicknesses, but the pain and inconvenience are just as real. It is natural for the Christian to ask whether God has provided any relief for such individuals. Some say that God decides whom he may heal on a case-by-case basis, that he may heal some but not others, and that he has good reasons for doing so in each instance. I will argue that according to the Scriptures, it is God’s desire for every Christian to be healthy. I base this assertion on what the Bible reveals to us concerning the nature of God and the atoning work of Christ. I will show that these two elements are the basis for faith in receiving healing. The Source and Origin of Sickness. In a very real sense, all sickness began because of sin. Physical death itself had started because of the sin of Adam: "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). Many individual instances of sickness had occurred since then as a direct result of specific sins. For example, after having healed a man who "had been an invalid for thirty-eight years" (John 5:5), Jesus said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you" (John 5:14). Although sickness itself had started due to Adam’s transgression, this is not to say that every instance of sickness is due to a specific sin that the individual has committed. In John 9, when Jesus and his disciples came across a man blind from birth, the disciples asked, "Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" (v. 2). Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned" (v. 3). In other words, not every instance of sickness can be traced back to a particular sin. However, even if a particular instance of sickness is the direct result of a sin that one has committed, the word of God says that there is forgiveness for such a one. James 5:15 says, "The prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven." We should be careful before determining the spiritual reasons for someone’s sickness. There are a number of reasons and it may not be a sin, so do not judge a person base on limited and inaccurate information. The person may not have sinned. He may have contracted the sickness and allow it to remain due to lack of wisdom or ignorance of the Scriptures, or some other reasons. God bless |
