701 | Why the brief genealogy V14-V30 | Ex 6:14 | azurelaw | 225311
V14 to V30 seems to me appeared not following the flow of the narrative from V13. This section looks like being added between V13 and 7:1 oddly. It makes much more sense to read 6:13 right away onward to 7:1. 1/ Why did Moses insert such paragraph? What was his purpose or message for his intended readers or target audience? 2/ This brief genealogy talked only the 3 oldest sons of Israel (Jacob) and further more, the line of Levi was mentioned with much detail comparatively. Why? It could not be the idea of emphasizing the preisthood of Levi's line since by that time God had not yet set up the priestly system. Your help is much appreciated. Thank you. Shalom Azure |

703 | revelation behind Exodus 11:2-3, 12:35-3 | Ex 11:3 | azurelaw | 213446
Dear conqueror, I believe it is, on one hand, because of God's grace on Israelites as you can find in verse 3 that you cited: "The LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians..." On the other hand, it is part of God's justice brought about against Egyptians' wicked deeds on His people at the beginning chapters of Exodus. You may also refer back earlier to Genesis chapters 43-47 the story about how and why Jacob (Israel) went to Egypt. They went there not empty-handed (Gen 46:6), they were not treated as slaves but honourable guests with rich promise by Pharaoh (Gen 45:17-20, 47:5-6), they have the promise from God to become a great nation (Gen 46:3). I don't see any mysterious revelations constituted to the borrowing of the Egyptians' treasure. Shalom Azure |

704 | were babys killed at passover | Ex 12:12 | azurelaw | 221723
Dear wejlly, No. See the below verse that not all babies, but all firstborn (including grown up man and animals / beasts in the land of Egypt). God is so merciful that He did not kill all (as He did when He judged the wicked people in Noah's time), but retained the second born children onward. Ex 12:12 'For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments--I am the LORD. Dear heman, Since you are new here, I hope the following tips helpful for you when posting and for better follow up discussion for other users. 1/ When you post a follow-up note or question in the existing thread, please mark it "note" unless you want to start a new question outside of the original thread. 2/ When you register, I believe (to my memory) there is a requirement that you need to fill in your valid email address. So, when a post/question is in respond to yours, the system will automatically notify you by email. In case you are sure that you are missing any email notification from Lockman, you can always write to them for help. 3/ As a long-time participant on the forum, the style of Searcher that I understand is that he always provide short and biblical answer, but might not be direct answer. He also likes to answer with a question to trigger the poster's thought to dig into the scripture. I think this is a good way to foster thinking. We have been experiencing many demanding straight forward direct from the forum as if the forum is a "fast food restaurant". I believe most of the regulars here on the forum do not think it a good idea for training serious bible study. Concerning your question, I see that brother Doc has provided you an answer already --- God created all things for His glory (my paraphrase of his actual wordings). Let me provide the below scriptures to consider:- Psalm 19 Roman 3:23 Roman 8:28 Remember, when you study the scriptures, you may encounter with difficulties on a certain/particular word or phrase. Don't just get stuck there and make haste to file your questions, try reread again and again the whole chapter or even those chapters before and after in order to get a better idea of the context that construct the idea of the writer of the book. God's holy Word is so deep and rich like a buried treasure. It requires our hardwork to dig, dig, dig... Shalom Azure |

Dear watchman, It is obvious that you are citing from external source without giving credit to the original author - this is called plagiarism. 708 | Why is witchcraft bad? | Ex 20:3 | azurelaw | 193454
Dear Andrew, First of all, 2 questions. 1/ Do you think plagiarism OK? 2/ Are you upto the age requirement (which is 18 at least) of the forum? Shalom Azure |

709 | Why is witchcraft bad? | Ex 20:3 | azurelaw | 193510
Dear Andrew, I am sorry that I did not express myself in a straight forward manner. I am not saying you are plagiarizing anyone's work or question. My such question was intended to draw your thought on your question : A friend told me it's ust satan's copy of what od can really do. So isn't a coy of something good still good? The issue is not copying something out of something that is good will still be good, what Satan does is to plagiarize (in some sense) and steal the credits and honour of our most high God. He wants to be God. That's why I quoted Ex 20:3 for your reference. And with your agreeing the unlawful behaviour of plagiarism, you have answered your own question instead. :-) Hope I have explained it clear. Shalom Azure P.S. Glad to learn that you are upto the age requirement. Keep posting so that we can learn together. Hope you enjoy the forum. |

710 | Worship in form of art | Ex 20:4 | azurelaw | 188975
Dear otahuti, Ex 20:4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.... 1/ Why do you think sculpting is a form of worship to God? 2/ Do you mean that you want to explain to children how people make their idols by sculpting? Thanks for your further elaboration. Shalom Azure |

711 | Worship in form of art | Ex 20:4 | azurelaw | 189010
Dear otahuti, I am terribly sorry that you felt hurt with my quoting of the scripture. I even did not notice your saying about me "close minded" as I just felt relieved to see your first part of the answer and skipped the rest in your first response to me. Please do understand that just by your short question, it would be quite difficult for me to understand what lies behind. That's why I did ask you for further elaboration and you did. It is appreciated. Plesae also understand that the border line between sculptures of arts and idols could be blurred (especially in China) if we are not careful. However, I want you to also know that I admire your gift, creativity and love to serve our Lord with it. Hope you enjoy the forum. Shalom Azure |

712 | ... | Ex 20:5 | azurelaw | 208309
Dear yearegods, Please read Exodus 20:2-6. God is jealous that His creature worship and give glory to things/people other than Him who is the most highest God, the only one God, the Creator of All. Please make fist letter capital when you write 'God'. Shalom Azure |

713 | Need Bible verse | Ex 20:6 | azurelaw | 218909
Dear Willow, You may read the book of Psalm which contains a lot of such blessings. However, the most vivid one comes to mind is Exodus 20:6. The verse is easily captured if you recite the 10 Commandments at church on Sundays. Shalom Azure |

714 | unpardonable sin in Ex 20:7? | Ex 20:7 | azurelaw | 196363
Matthew 12:31 talks about unpardonable sin. Can Ex 20:7 also refer to unpardonable sin? John Gill's commentary mentioned that the punishment if not in this life but the next life to come in the great judgment day (Targum of Jonathan). Thanks for your help for better understanding. Shalom Azure |

715 | unpardonable sin in Ex 20:7? | Ex 20:7 | azurelaw | 196421
Dear Brother Doc, Thank you very much for the answer. Yesterday (Sunday) was a very busy day and a great day for our synagogue as we have to attend the pastoral ordination ceremony for our teacher in the afternoon right after our Sunday service. Now I have the time to re-read your answer and have a better understanding in concern with Exo 20:7. God bless and Shalom Azure |

716 | Swearing on God's Name | Ex 20:7 | azurelaw | 221441
Dear Rebekeh, I believe the related verse to your situation is Exodus 20:7. Note that it is not about sin that cannot be forgiven, but he who commits the sin must be punished. So, if you repent of your sin and turn away from it, God will forgive. The only unpardonable sin is recorded in Matthew 12:32. However, the Bible warns us not to make swear so casually. To learn more about the teaching on swearing, you may do a word search by typing "swear" on the Bible Text search box and check on the books of Leviticus, Numbers and Matthew. Remember, do not read only a bible verse. Proper understanding needed in accordance with its context. Shalom Azure |

717 | Sunday Sabbath or not? | Ex 20:8 | azurelaw | 232915
Dear EdB, I see that you have long been a forum participant since 2001 and my experience in reading some of your past posts no doubt have been pleasant and a blessing. Yet, I feel sad to see your below statement unfair and lacking brotherly love. "As I said I think this discussion is ended unless you want to make another charge against me." I really cannot understand how could you presume Beja's motive if he would continue the discussion. From your such statement, are you saying if he continues to respond, he will be liable to setting any charges against you (be it legitimate or not)? Shalom Azure |

718 | Scrpture on helping selfish? | Ex 20:9 | azurelaw | 221211
Dear puppytoes, Scripture reference: Thess 3:10-12 Exodus 20:9 You may also do a Bible text search of "sluggard" in the search box at the right hand corner. It will give you all verses containing the word "sluggard". Shalom Azure |

719 | the 5th commandment | Ex 20:12 | azurelaw | 174786
Can anybody explain the meaning of the promise given in the 5th commandment - honour your parents? This promise was made straight direct to Israelite concerning Canaan (I guess?). How should we view this promise nowadays? Does "live long" mean physical longetivity? (I don't think so) If so, I think it wouldn't be a blessing in today's world with so many social problems. Thanks for helping me to understand this. |
||||||
720 | the 5th commandment | Ex 20:12 | azurelaw | 174805
Thank you Tim, Basically, I have the same thought of yours. However, why did Paul repeat the commandment in Ephesian 6:1-4 if it only directed to the Israelites in OT time? Was he also stressing a bit on God's promise? Was the promise meant to be the kingdom of God when applied to us (gentiles) nowadays? What was the original meaning of 'honour' in Greek, Latin? Because I am reading a Chinese bible (I am a Hong Kong citizen) together with an English (NIV) version. The meaning of 'honour' translated in Chinese, to my understanding, bears the meaning of 'obedience' and 'respect'. I don't get the meaning of 'honour'. Thanks again. Azure |
