Searcher, thanks for the reasoning: “Translators have many reasons ... you need to ask them.” I believe I will. I was hoping to know this side of eternity. But, now that you mentioned the idea, someday, I will ask William Tyndale personally … “Sir, do you realize how much time people spent trying to decipher your choice of words from Greek to English? If you had only undergone Wycliffe’s Bible Translator’s training school, we won’t have near the fun.” :) I sure hope “Billy” Tyndale made to the same other side I’m going to, otherwise someone else will have to ask him, through all that smoke. |

Tim, My problem of referring to mistranslations as “mistranslations” stems from discovering the vast differences in translations of such verses as Hosea 11:12, (or, as one bible has it, in Hosea 12:1) “Ephraim surrounds me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit; Judah is ALSO UNRULY AGAINST God, Even AGAINST the Holy one who is faithful.” Others translate it, “Judah RULES WITH GOD and WITH the Holy ones.” Vast difference. Too many sermons are preached because a “wrong” translation of certain portions of scriptures is “believed as gospel.” Or, take Job, where it says ‘curse God and die’. That Hebrew word, “BaraK” everywhere else, except Job, is translated bless, blessed, blessings, blessedness, etc. etc. Why? If the author (inspired of God?) of Job had wanted to convey the premise of a “curse”, what was the matter with the word “arar”, or, “kawbab” or any other word referring to the opposite meaning of bless? (Don’t you just love trying to spell in an attempt to convey Hebrew words phonetically?) Once I recognized the "error", it helped me understand the real messages filled in Job, as opposed to what some of our present-day books claim. These are just a few such, (if I may again use the term – mistranslations) that I have come across in my studies over the years. Appreciate your valuable labors, Tim Taleb |

Hello, my friend Tim. Thank you for searching out evidence to back up the efforts of the hard working translators of His word. Do you understand my “problem”, however? With “such and such” a phrase translated in a positive sense, but the translators recognizing that it can be translated into a negative sense as well, (or visa versa) and either or, but never both, are preached as gospel – one, or the other, is wrong. Right? Most of my too many bible translations have cross references, foot notes, or other type of “aid”. But in the “troubling verses” they too often fail to provide “both sides of a possibility”. That’s where the source of too many problem verses begins, when I discover on my own the “other possibility (and, thank you, Tim, I agree. I really should refrain from using the term mistranslation, especially without proof which is which). I knew the other scriptures with curse in Job tossed a curve ball, but often the word does. My Hebrew-English Bible translates the words, to read right to left, like Hebrew does. It translates “barak” as bless. Whoa, I thought. I checked other words translated from “barak” and, low and behold, they were all bless, etc. A few weeks later, I heard a sermon on that section. Poor Job’s wife, I concluded. How many times have you heard a sermon about poor Job’s wife ridiculing her husband? You inquired, “If Job's wife was asking him to 'bless' God, why would Job rebuke her? What if she actually said, “Job, just bless God and get on with dying. That will put you out of your misery.” What if Job responded with the same words as recorded, but, because the translators failed to catch the “bless”, wrongly concluded Job “meant” something else with his words. Perhaps, (and that is ONLY a perhaps) Job meant what he said, but the translator’s emphasis were misplaced. Couldn’t Job’s response have meant? “Foolish, Woman, why do you think I should bless God and die. God gave me a great life, yet it doesn’t mean God doesn’t allow sickness. So, I have no excuse to “want to” die.” Don’t forget, God DID allow the sickness. That seems to be why the portion of scripture stated, “Job did not sin with his lips.” So, why bother to wonder, you wonder? Perhaps I should begin wondering that too, but the Berean in me refuses to NOT want to check it out. Once again, I promise to refrain from starting any “First Blessed Church of Mrs. Job”, or, “The Congregation of Was He For or Against God”, but still …. Tim, where you shared about our own language changes – Good points. Sometimes it just takes another mind to help clear our own. Is that one of the reasons Paul stated in 1 Cor. 2:15, "But WE share the mind of Christ, rather than "I" (meaning Paul, not me)? Blessings, Taleb |

Met, while a few denominations take this literally, according to their interpretation, they fail to use ALL of Scripture as 2 Tim 3:16 instructs. For one of many examples: 2 Corinthians 6-9-11 explains what I mean. “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortionists, shall inherit the kingdom of God." But it doesn't end with those words, it continues with these: "And such WERE some of you: BUT you ARE washed, BUT you ARE sanctified, BUT you ARE justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” In plain English, whatever the former sin, they are forever gone. Verse 11 began with “And such WERE (past tense) some of you.” Then it provided three “BUTS” to bring us to the present tense “ARE”. So in answer to your worthwhile question, "According to God's Word, anyone who has sinned and been forgiven can be a Pastor. Anyone who sinned before they were a Christian, has had ALL THOSE SINS forgiven, and HE doesn't remember them anymore. Blessings, Taleb |

You asked a legitimate question, “what does God/ the bible say about drinking wine and alcohol?” While some incorrectly claim that the Scripture strictly forbids it, using the hit and miss of select Scriptures as evidence, the whole of Scriptures very clearly state the truth. Let me make this perfectly clear about one thing - I personally do not drink wine or alcohol, or coffee. But the only reason I don’t drink those things - I don’t like the taste. EdB tried to feed you misinformation with a lop-sided explanation. Prayon also only gave you one side of Scriptures’ two sides of dealing with alcohol. The first “mention” of the Lord “giving permission” to drink alcohol in Scriptures is found in Deut. 14:26 “And you MAY spend money for whatever you wish, for oxen, sheep, for wine, or liquor, or anything that you have a craving for, and there you must feast in joy before the Lord your God, you and your household” This “command to buy and drink” follows what the Lord declared “against” drinking wine and strong drink in Lev 10:9. BUT observe the “who, where and when” it is forbidden. “And the LORD said to Aaron, ‘Drink no wine or liquor, neither you nor your sons WHEN you enter the tent of the meeting’ …” As far as what EdB attempted to suggest concerning the wedding in Cana … Unless one can get DRUNK on grape juice, Jesus turned the water into WINE. John 2:10 “Everyone else serves his good wine first, and his poorer wine after people have drunk deeply …” The “drunk freely” means “to drink to intoxication (methuo)” It is always used to signify that thought, like in 1 Cor 11:21 where Paul comes down on people who used the wine in communion to “get drunk”. The common misconception that Jesus used grape juice for the last supper goes against the “benefits” that WINE represents in His blood. Anyone who has ever partaken of a passover and used grape juice and leaven bread or crackers HASN'T partaken in a passover feast, they merely sipped juice and ate crackers. Blessings, Taleb |

Hank, great question. Years ago, when a dear friend was asked about “reading the Bible” he commented, “I haven’t read the Bible in years. I study it.” For years, his statement became my attitude. Now, I do both, but separately. In the past, when I have worked with other churches, too often, too many expect their preacher to do the “Bible” FOR them. But Peter’s 3:15 “includes” verse 8 (if you catch my drift). “Finally, let ALL OF YOU be …” and Peter lead us to that place where he exhorts INDIVIDUALS in verse 15 with “but revere Christ in YOUR hearts and be always ready to make a defense to EVERY ONE” …(also individuals) “… who asks you for the reason of the hope that is within YOU.” And the same goes for 2 Tim 2:15. It IS everyone’s personal responsibility to present THEMSELVES to God …” Last year I made a resolution NOT to make any resolutions. I kept it too. : ) This year I promised myself to read at least one chapter of the New, one chapter of the Old, one Proverb (according to the date, like today it’d be 13), and five Psalms – the date, plus thirty, plus thirty, plus thirty, plus thirty. (Today, Psalms 13, 43, 73, 103, and 143.) That means I will read every Psalm and every Proverb 12 times this year. I’ll also read completely through the Scriptures again. In the past, my BIGGEST problem has always been – when I am reading something, a verse, a phrase, or a word catches my eye, and away I go. Too often, with too many different translations spread out on the floor, with too many “study books” on the “topic” at hand and … Thus far, this year, I am able to get a better grip. If I notice such now, I keep reading until I am finished, THEN I race to the researching books. Only eleven and a half months to go, before I get to start all over again. :) Blessings, Taleb P.S. For an exact answer that is also brief, take Hebrew 10:8-9 “First, Jesus said, ‘Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings AND sin offerings You (God the Father) neither desired nor delighted in.’ (although the law required them to be made). Then Jesus said, ‘Here I am. I have come to do Your will.' Jesus SETS ASIDE the first to establish the second.” If Jesus set the first (the Jewish aspects of worship and sacrifice) to establish the second, WHY, pray tell would anyone want to reinstate it? Again, I refer you to the Book of Hebrews. It doesn't take long. I suggest you read it outloud to yourself and pay particular attention to what the author says about REPLACING the old with the new. Jesus annulled the Levitical priesthood AND the law it served because of its weakness AND uselessness, for the law brought nothing to perfection. BUT a BETTER HOPE has supervended, and through IT we draw near to God." (Hebrews 7:18-19) Hebrews 8:8-9 "If that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no place for a second one. BUT GOD, finding fault with them ..." As a P.S., I will quote from Galatians (another great book that points out our freedom FROM the old). Gal. 3:19--"What is the relevance of the law, in such cases? It was given in view of trangressions and promulgated by angels, at the hands of a mediator; it WAS TO BE VALID ONLY UNTIL that descendant or offspring came to whom the promise had been given." Searcher, I have a page stapled to my car insurance policy which adds another car to it. On top of that page is a NEW one which takes that same car off and adds another. All the NEW pages are a vital part of that OLD insurance policy. I would no more throw one of those OLD pages away than I would cast aside the OT. The OLD spells out the "vitals" of the NEW, even though much is "obsolete", the proof of the NEW is tied to the OLD. Most of the New Testament books have something like, "as it is written". Those words, or similar ones, show up throughout. Rather, I understand WHO the OT points to, and now that He (whom the OT paints has come into the world - that which pointed "towards" Him - those OT things which were only a "foreshadow" of things to come (HIM) - I believe! While some "strive" to obey the 10 commandments, I concentrate on the only one that remains. Jesus said, "A NEW commandment I give to you"... that you love one another ... its truth is reinforced by Paul's writings in Gal 5:14 "The WHOLE LAW HAS FOUND ITS FULFILLMENT in this one saying: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself ..." So, I DON"T HAVE to follow the OLD - I GET to follow the NEW. The "old" WAS obliged - UNTIL CHRIST set us FREE. The NEW is that freedom. So you will understand, I understand what it means to be "free from the law", I'll close with Paul's precious words in Romans 6:15 "...What does this all lead to? Just because we are not UNDER the law but under grace, are we free to sin? By no means! I, like you and others who believe God's truth, know Romans 8:3 "For what the law was POWERLESS to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, GOD DID by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering ..." I one I chose to use was found in Galatians 5:14. The one I used was from The New American Bible. Other translations sum it up with the same truth, but using different words. (NIV) "The ENTIRE LAW IS SUMMED UP in a single command ..." (Geneva's Bible) "For ALL THE LAW is fulfilled in one word, [even] in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." (The People's Bible) "For ALL THE LAW is fulfilled. The essence of the law is comprehended in a single command--that of loving your neighbor ..." Searcher, it would be a lot easier IF we stayed on the same page. With so many translations at my disposal, I assume you are using the same ones. You are absolutely correct. It DOESN"T say "the reality is Christ" - at least in the three different Greek NT I have. But NEITHER does it say "substance belongs to Christ". It actually reads exactly the same in all three Greek New Testaments - "... the Body (strong's 4983) of Christ." Wow! Neat discovery. Thank you. That same "Body" word (Soma) is used metaphorically of the mystic Body of Christ e.g. Eph 1:23; and in Col.1:18, 22 abd 24. And you are also correct - it doesn't say those things are "done away with". BUT it does say, let no one act as your judge - this can ONLY mean that IF someone doesn't abide by them - don't condemn them. Blessings, Taleb |

Searcher, Jesus FULFILLED the law. How? By His death. The penalty for "breaking the law" was death. The penalty for sin is death. Jesus PAID it for us - you, me, and everyone else - whether you, they, or I believe it or not. When Jesus PAID the penalty on the cross - the law WAS fulfilled. With the law fulfilled once and for all time - there is no more need to ever fulfill it again. The NT explains it so often. But Hebrews demonstrates what is BETTER than the OLD. Christians are missing something that they need? They need to understand the Bible from a Messianic Jew’s perspective? If my Messianic Jewish brother were still alive, he would inform you much about his perspective. Like it not being necessary for everyone to be born again, giving John the Baptist as an example. Or, proving how the wedding at Cana was Jesus’, stating that to be a Rabbi – one needed to be married, and as God told the first Adam it wasn’t good for him to be alone, neither would it be good for Jesus – the second Adam. He would use "Scripture" to prove that satan was created as God’s pawn for evil, because God needed something evil to balance off His good. (If you are reading any Jewish material – you already know that idea is prevalent.) He argued in favor of re-incarnation, again pointing at Elijah returning as John the Baptist. Quoting the verse that “promises man three-score and ten years of life”, he could explain that’s the reason some die young. They came back to live another life in someone else’s being. (Another strong Jewish belief.) Does any of your literature explain who Rahab came back as? If not, ask any Rabbi. For years, our family would gather for Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. The Jewish members always outspend the Christian members. When my brother “accepted Jesus” he thought of himself as being a completed Jew. The Jewish side ridiculed him. The “Christian” side questioned his reasoning. He would come home drunk and preach to me in the wee hours of the morning. This Jesus, he preached, never denied the accusations tossed His way about being a glutton and drunkard. So that proved it was OK. Although my brother is buried in a “Christian” cemetery (that side of the family had an extra site), his kids made sure he only wore his tasseled “undergarment” – otherwise he was stark naked. They also made sure the rocks were placed over the site. The children, like other Messianic Jews, KNEW his spirit hovered over their home, until they would release it to “be born again in some infant, so he could get his “three-score and ten”. Oh, he celebrated the feasts and, wearing his skull cap and prayer shawl, faced Jerusalem when he prayed. They lit the candles, and ate Kosher foods only. Please read the New Testament carefully – it will save you from making the same mistakes too many others make. Paul meant what he wrote about becoming tangled up again in the yoke of bondage. EdB, run, don’t walk, to your nearest library. Grab the thickest “Jewish Encyclopedia” on the shelf. These encyclopedias, according to the one I have available in my home, “hope to extend and make available Jewish knowledge to JEWS”. You wrote, “No real Jew believes in reincarnation, or that Satan was created as God’s evil pawn.” In that same library book, look up “Kabbalah” (or, Cabalah). (which basically means "tradition") The book will explain that the major teachings of Jewish "tradition" include – (I'm quoting from one of my own, which says the same thing as some I have given away.) “God did NOT create the world personally…” “The Jews were chosen to preserve the created world…” "Impure and contaminated souls, MUST, after death, reinhabit another body, and then another, until they have purified.” (This world-wide Jewish teaching sure has the tone of reincarnation to me.) Look up the word “satan”. It will explain about the creation of the archangel (satan) whose functions are to tempt man to sin … he has no independent power, but appears only as a servant of God, whose permission he must seek …” While you have the encyclopedia in your hands, look up “Death”. You will read how “Hell is for 12 months max. It will tell you some Jews believe everybody, (Jews and Goys), will have a part in the world to come. The real wicked will be disintegrated. Or, save the trip. There are numerous Jewish Encyclopedias on the net. They ALL will show you the same thing. You also stated, “All Messianic Jews hold and treasure the New Testament book of Hebrews.” EdB, IF they held and treasured what the book of Hebrews says, they CAN'T BE Messianic "JEWS". They can only be pure and simple (No Jew, No Gentile) "Christians". Messianic Jews “Love only the Shadow” of Him who came. If they can't stop believing the "fundamentals" (feasts, etc.) of what ALL Jews believe and add Jesus to the mix - what do you suppose happens? I have witnessed exactly what happens. Every Jew, every Gentile, must count as rubbish ALL the "pre-born-again-traditons" in order to be set free to worship Him in spirit and in TRUTH. Why EMBRACE the shadow of your wife, when, if the "shadow" is present so is she? And as far as the other “jumped to conclusions” you charged ME with in your letter, like my brother coming home drunk – “AMEN!” and I wasn’t a follower of Jesus when I told my brother the same thing. You feel I presented “very pro Islamic propaganda”? I thought I was being pro-people towards those who believe a lie by building on what we DO believe together. Do you walk up to a JW co-worker and say, “Hey, Liar, I want to talk to you about how wrong that paper is you gave me.” Or would it not be better to say? “Hey, Clayton, can I take you out for lunch? I have some questions about what your paper The Watch Tower stated.” Does the second way mean I am “Pro-JW?” As far as your being "surprised" I have Jewish relatives, check out the profile someone, early on, suggested I post, which I did eons ago. Other postings about my “having enough Jewish blood in me to have been sent to the furnaces in Germany”, apparently were never seen. Good morning. My understanding of love MUST be different than yours. I KNOW that without my love for Christ - (impossible to experience without His first haven't loved me) I CAN'T possibly love my neighbor -- UNLESS I love God with my whole heart, my whole soul and my whole mind. I quess that is why I have no problem loving my Arab-blood brothers. Do you know anyone who loves everyone, even their enemies, but hates God? Neither do I. Those verses ring so true. It causes me to wonder why the rest of those on this “Bible Study Forum” can’t see that also. Phil. 3:8-9: “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, NOT having mine own righteousness, WHICH IS OF THE LAW, BUT that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness WHICH IS OF GOD BY FAITH.” I heartily agree with you. There is no Jew, no Gentile to God, since the NEW freedom, purchased by Christ’s blood, replaced the OLD LAW and all its traditions. Thanks again.
