441 | Witnessing: What is your style? | John 1:7 | Sir Pent | 21692
My Evangelism Experience ........................ I agree with my colleagues that this is a great question. As Christians we are called to follow the "Great Commision", but what does that look like? Nolan, has done well at describing several possibilities. I have done some "street witnessing" in college, which was mostly the direct approach. I have also used the social approach at times by inviting people to church activities. However, I relate most closely with options 2 and 3, which are connected for me. My own testimony is of an intellectual nature, as God chose to show me His truth through logic and reason. Therefore, when I am talking to non-Christians about faith, I usually try to lead them through the same approach that I took. I also often am presented with opportunities to share about what God has done in my life. When someone compliments me on something, I often realize that I did not always have that character trait. This makes a great chance to tell that person how I used to be and how that God has changed me for the better. I have found this approach to be effective. |

442 | Witnessing: What is your style? | John 1:7 | Sir Pent | 21783
Personal Note .................................. Dear Nolan, Yes, I remember very well your visits to Kentucky, when we caught up with each other, and saw the paths that God had taken our lives on. I look forward to being able to get together again sometime in the future. I'm glad that our time witnessing to strangers on the streets and your experience at Wal-Mart were both so impacting on yourself and those around you. I recently had another experience with this "direct" approach. Each year there is a Jessamine Jamboree Festival near my town. It is a medium size fair with craft booths, food booths, and a carnaval. This year my wife and I set up a booth and had free helium balloons for kids, free bottled water for adults, and free storytelling for everyone. The story was the "Wordless Book", which a gospel presentation developed by Child Evangelism Fellowhip. Over the course of the weekend, we gave away about 500 baloons or water bottles (telling people that they were free gifts to show God's love for them). Of those people, about 250 people stayed to hear the gospel story. And of those 35 people prayed for forgivness of sin, and to recieve Jesus Christ into their lives. It was a tremendous experience. |

443 | No trnsfiguration account in John? | John 1:14 | Sir Pent | 119496
Personal Note.............................................. Mommapbs, Thanks for pointing out that the disciples fell asleep at both the transfiguration and in the garden where Jesus was arrested. These were two times when they most should have been awake and in prayer, yet they gave into temptation of the flesh. Isn't it interesting that thousands of years later, Satan still uses the same strategy. How many times have I tried to read the Bible or pray early in the morning or late at night, and find myself giving into sleep and losing focus on God? |

444 | is selling in a church building fine? | John 2:13 | Sir Pent | 59243
I’m going out on a limb here to disagree with a practice that is becoming common in many churches in America today. That practice is selling food in the church. I believe this is wrong for many reasons. From most important to least important: 1. The true purpose of a church service is to worship God as a family of believers. The service is FOR GOD, not for people. When churches put on elaborate entertainments, and let people bring popcorn into the sanctuary, they are profaning a holy place and turning a worship service into just a show. 2. The Bible warns us as Christians to not only avoid evil, but even the appearance of evil. Even if the proceeds of the sale of food does go into the Mission Fund or whatever, many people (especially visitors) will not know that. With all of the scandals that have been so publicized about Christian ministries embezelling large amounts of money for their own personal gain, it would be very easy for them to jump to some wrong conclusions. 3. The food will cause division within the church. There will be some who think it is wrong and others who will think it is right. There will be some who buy it and are satisfied, and others who will not have the money and will be hungry and envious. There will be some who are honest and turn in all the money, and others who will give in to temptation and will keep some for themselves. There will be some who will try to pay attention to the service, and there will be others who will be crinkling the wrapping, or crunching the chips, and making it difficult for those around to focus. 4. It’s good for us all to be able to spend a few hours once a week focusing on God, instead of our stomachs. 5. There’s six other days in the week, when you could have a bake sale out in the parking lot, to raise money. |

445 | is selling in a church building fine? | John 2:13 | Sir Pent | 59335
Personal Note........................... Dear Justme, There is actually a great deal of information on me. Just click on my name to see what is available. Also, thanks for reminding me that my 1 year anniversary on the forum has just passed. I have been gone for a while due to frustrations with redundancy and lack of organization. However, I have recently felt led to return and ignore much of the chaff while just responding to the messages that are from people truly searching for answers. |

446 | is selling in a church building fine? | John 2:13 | Sir Pent | 59516
A Different View........................................ Dear Justme, I agree with EdB that the Bible is the most important book for all Christians to read, and that too few of them spend enough time studying it. However, I would also like to say that I think your idea of a “suggested reading list” is terriffic. You are entirely correct that it would be easy for a person to be led far astray by reading some books in Christian Bookstores. Therefore, I think that it is a great idea for a church or a pastor to put together a list of good books to read for their congregation. This just seems to me to be another way of “shepherding the flock”. There is definately value in many books beside the Bible, and infact, I have mentioned a couple in my personal profile on this site. |

447 | is selling in a church building fine? | John 2:13 | Sir Pent | 59518
A Similar View........................................ Dear Roark89, I pretty much agree with EdB here. You do have a point that God gives some people gifts that they could use to make money, and that money could help to enable them to do ministry. I just don’t think that they should do them at the same time. ........................................ For instance, the apostle Paul had the ability to make tents. However, I sincerely doubt that he ever tried to auction them off during a service where he was preaching the Gospel of Christ. I imagine that he made the tents and sold them during the week, and left them at home when he went to go “minister”. ........................................ I think that musicians, authors, etc. should do the same. It’s good for them to write books (so people who will never hear them in person can read their ideas), or make tapes (so people who enjoy thier music can listen to them more often). However, I believe that they should only sell these things through bookstores, or the internet, or whatever during the week, and not inside the church. |

448 | Please answer the question directly. | John 3:5 | Sir Pent | 113357
Referral to another thread..................................... Hello Arrow1, I don't want to get into the whole baptism discussion. However, I would like to point out that I do not believe that speaking the original languages makes someone more qualified to understand the Bible. I think that God has preserved the truth of the Bible all the way to our time and our language. For more information on this idea, please type the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right of the screen. |

449 | was archangel michael considered Hisson | John 3:16 | Sir Pent | 61879
No. Jesus is God's ONLY BEGOTTEN SON. Out of curiosity, why do you keep asking questions about the archangel Michael.
450 | What is Christianity? | John 3:16 | Sir Pent | 119292
My answer........................................... Hi Chummypupcy, You have asked a very big question to which one could answer in a variety of ways. One way to define Christianity is to look at what beliefs are consistently upheld. I would recommend that you type in the number 114284 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to a post by Emmaus, who included the 2 most famous creeds (Apostle's and Nicean) and some scripture to back them up. Another way is to define some of the most important concepts in Christianity. I would recommend that you type in the number 18160 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to the first of 2 posts that I once wrote to do this very thing. A third way to explain what Chirstianity is would be to talk about it in terms of the relationship that we have with God. I think that this is the most complete understanding of what it is, however, it is also the hardest to explain in an objective manner. I would say that being a Christian means that you have a relationship with Jesus Christ where He is your savior. I would also say that you have a relationship with God where He is your Lord and friend. |

451 | must we eat Jesus literally? | John 6:53 | Sir Pent | 22745
Clarification ................................... Dear Joe, This last post of yours was excellent. It accurately presented the nuances of several different protestant groups beliefs regarding communion. I just want to point out that I think you meant the word "cannibal" (eaters of humans, which Christians are not) instead of "carnivore" (eaters of meat, which many Christians are). |

452 | HOW DOES GOD VIEW AN ADULTERESS WOMAN WH | John 8:11 | Sir Pent | 120919
Referral to another thread............................................ Hi Ucmenew, You seem to be curious about how to balance "forgiveness" and "reaping what we sow". Please type the number 120487 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to a post that I wrote dealing with the two different kinds of consequences of sin. |

454 | Jesus showed he is God? | John 10:30 | Sir Pent | 112550
My answer........................................ Hi Cryst9m, Yes, I have wondered about how Jesus showed that He was God. In fact, there was a time when I believed that Jesus was not God. However, I later discovered the truth of God's deity, and now love Him as my savior, lord, and friend. As for the Bible, there are many places that record ways that Jesus showed He was God. EdB has listed several of these. I would point you to Romans 1:4, which talks about how Jesus was declared to be God because of the ressurection. |

455 | Who do you love that you are unwill...? | John 13:34 | Sir Pent | 128236
Attempt at consensus.................................................. EdB, CDBJ, Steve, Stultis, and Xerxes, Let's take a step back here for a moment guys. You all seem to be getting pretty heated, which is not helpful for this discussion. Also, I don't think that you actually disagree with each other to begin with. All 5 of you believe that faith in Jesus Christ is essential to being a Christian, right? All 5 of you believe that as Christians we are called to follow Jesus command to love, right? All 5 of you believe that following that commandment means more than just saying we love other, but rather that we live out that love through our actions, right? So if you all agree on these important points, can we exhibit some love in this thread by not being easily angered? |

456 | Are there 4 meanings for the word love? | John 15:12 | Sir Pent | 113150
My answer............................... Hello tjtmt, I do not know for sure the answer to your question, as I suppose different people would define and categorize "love" in different ways. However, I think that this would cover what a large number of people would say. I know that there were at least 4 different Greek words that we translate into English as "love. They were "agape", "philia", "storge", and "eros". "Agape" is usually defined as unconditional or unselfish love. "Philia" is the love between friends. "Storge" is the love between family. And "Eros" is the love of attraction (usually physically). |

457 | Christ died on a stake and not a cross? | John 19:17 | Sir Pent | 62342
Support ........................................ I completely agree with Hank here. As I have often said, this forum has so much potential to be truly meaningful to a world of people searching for answers. However, for that to happen, Hank has hit the nail on the head. We should answer their questions about the details. But our overall goal should always be to point them to God, Himself, and His overarching message of love, forgiveness, and desiring a healthy relationship with each of us. And that is only possible through Jesus, and His death on the cross. Thanks Hank, for putting things in perpective on this one :) |

458 | Why must people be 18 to share ideas? | John 19:17 | Sir Pent | 128422
Lockman Question...................................................... Hi Hank, Wow, I missed that requirement when I initially came to the forum. Thankfully, it does not apply to me (having just turned 28), but I am unclear as to what reason the Lockman Foundation would have to require people to be 18 years old to share their thoughts on the Bible. Do you know what their reasoning is on this matter? |

459 | hoyy spirit bap. evidence tounges? | Acts | Sir Pent | 62294
A Different View ......................................... Dear Hank, Kalos, and apparently large numbers of other colleagues here on the forum (and even possibly the Lockman Foundation themselves), It seems that there has been a “piling on” lately of the person named John Reformed, who relatively recently joined our Forum. As a long time participant here, I would like to say at least something in his defense. I do not believe that John Reformed should be banned from this forum at this time. I understand that many of my colleagues (who I respect greatly) are frustrated that such a large number of his posts seem to be proselytizing the Calvinist perspective of Christianity. However, is this so unusual on this forum. ......................................... If one did a search of the user name “Ray” and the word “capitalization”, you would find that an unusually high number of Ray’s posts regarding scriptures and subjects from all over the Bible are focused on this one theme of capitalization. If you looked at all the posts written by Tim Moran, you would find that he focuses a lot more on Greek and Hebrew translation than almost all other forum members. I do not say this to insult Ray (who I haven’t had much contact with but is well respected here) or Tim (who I have had significant thread sharing with, and consider to be a friend). I am merely making the point that each of us has our own particular interests that are what fire our participation here at the forum. And these interests naturally tend to color our perception of everything in scripture, and therefore all of our posts here. ......................................... Therefore, John Reformed, tendency is not that unusual on this forum. Nor is it anti-Christian. I disagree with his perspective, but it definitely falls within the category of orthodoxy, and is believed by very large numbers of our Christian brothers and sisters. This all being said, I have found my own discussion with John Reformed to be (at least up to this point) constructive. He seems to be well aware of scripture and uses it quite often. He seems to be intelligent and thinks about his posts thoroughly. He also has done an admirable job of keeping his focus on the subjects that he is discussing as opposed to insulting the person who he is discussing with. It seems to me that these are the some of the key attributes of a person who would be beneficial to have posting on this forum. ......................................... In conclusion, I would encourage you all to rethink your opposition to John Reformed, and give him the chance to hopefully, over time, share some thoughts on other issues, while not squelching the thing that seems to drive his interest. |

460 | How Judas Iscariot died? | Acts 1:18 | Sir Pent | 60227
A Different View ................................. Hello again my good friend Mekarios. It has been a long time since I have had the pleasure of talking with you. However, not as long as the topic of Judas’ death has lingered on this forum :) I see that you answered this question over a year ago, and yet had to answer it again today. It never ceases to amaze me that so many people refuse to use the search tool to check their question before adding redundant threads. ................................. Oh well, after looking at the posts from the several times that this question has been asked and answered, I see the there seems to be complete agreement (rare on any forum) that Judas hung himself, then the rope (or branch) broke, he fell on rocks, and his guts came out. This is possible, and is what I believed for years about this issue. However, I have recently heard another explanation which is also possible. ................................. The basic idea is that the accounts in Matthew and Acts are not sequential events, but the same event. How can this be, you might ask. Well the explanation that I heard was the the use of a rope for hanging was actually a relatively recent custom, and was not used back in Jesus’ day and culture. Hanging meant something very different to the people back then. For instance, Jesus HUNG on the cross, yet He was nailed to wood, no rope involved. Another type of HANGING that was common in that time was to impale someone on a long sharp pole, and then stick it in the ground so that they are high in the air. ................................. Therefore, Judas could have set up a sharp pole, and then climbed a tree, (or a hill, etc.), and then flung himself headlong onto the pole, impaling himself. This would have been viewed in the culture of his day as HANGING himself, and would at the same time of course lead to some spilling of guts. |
