581 | The last reference of Joseph | Luke 2:51 | Rowdy | 114508
I've transposed the following for context: Luke 2:48 When they saw Him, they were astonished; and His mother said to Him, "Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You." 49 And He said to them, "Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father's house?" 50 But they did not understand the statement which He had made to them. 51 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. It looks like you overlooked this verse for in same chapter, Joseph is referred by pronoun them. It does look like this is the last time the Bible refers to Jesus' earthly father. Kinda humbling to us guys, huh? Savior of the world and His earthly father barely gets a half dozen verses said of him. God bless. |

583 | Help | Luke 3:21 | Rowdy | 109084
21When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." Here you have all 3: 1) Jesus in the water, 2) God doing the speaking and approving with 3) the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Need I say more. |

Just pure curiosty on my part: "pratisis" is practices and "ecxtendid" is extended, correct? I too am intested in more details on this line of discussion. Can you elaborate? I assume that these were just typos or Bumpas's off day. We all have those. Just watch us. God bless. --Rowdy |

585 | Jesus and the Jubilee Year in Luke | Luke 4:18 | Rowdy | 114779
I have to agree and say an Hearty Amen!! There's far too much hate of all kinds in this world and not nearly enough really genuine love, the kind of love we see from our God. His love was freely given to us, to every single one of us on this planet. Preach on, dear friend. I do enjoy reading your posts to this Forum and God bless.
586 | Who can stand before envy? | Luke 4:28 | Rowdy | 121047
You make several good points but let's not forget the tremendous capacity of compassion and mercy from our God as reflected in Jesus' ministry here on earth. He showed a huge amount of mercy, forgiveness and compassion on a large number of people like the woman caught in the very act of adultery. I would also refer you to a previous post 120739. We must remember the devil is the perfect opposite of our Lord, Jesus as the perfect teacher and ideal High Priest, with the devil as the ultimate deceiver. He can paint a bald face lie like that in the Garden of Eden and make it appear pleasing and attractive in spite of its being in direct disobedience to our Father. Also, we must practice the guidance given by Jesus Himself in Matt 13. If we're not certain as to the motivation of the people we see in the world, we must treat them with care, allowing both the strong in faith (wheat) and all the others (possible tares) grow together and let God sort us out upon His final Judgment. But that doesn't mean we can't teach them from God's Word for we must if we're going to obey the Lord. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

590 | Help me solve this apparent conflict | Luke 8:15 | Rowdy | 111772
Jer 17:5 This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD . 6 He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. 7 "But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD , whose confidence is in him. 8 He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." 9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 "I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve." compared to Acts 17:10 As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 12Many of the Jews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men. I think we benefit greatly and see an answer in Paul's letter to the Romans, Chapter 7 as follows: 14We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[3] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. All the writers of God's word know from God that the heart of man is NOT naturally inclined toward God's perfect standard of goodness as we see in the One and only perfect Human, Christ Jesus. But our Father knows when we sit for a moment and commune with Him or with His family members as in a worship service, our hearts (the souls of men and women) can be lifted up to Him with a clean conscience. Then and only then, can we feel free to approach our God in prayer or worship Him. It is this inner conflict going on since Adam and Eve, this tug of war between God and the devil for our devotion to one or the other that is portrayed in these verses and throughout most of the Bible. We saw it in Abraham, in Moses in the Israelite's constant swing from extreme neglect to reconciliation to their God. We see it Peter and in Jesus' family members. We see it in Paul as mentioned before and we finally see it in the book of Revelation. So you see, it's nothing new. Good question. God bless. |

591 | Here is where I'm puzzled | Luke 8:15 | Rowdy | 111830
It might be instructive to insert at this moment the following quote from Apostle Paul: Rom 9:14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."[6] 16It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy. 17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."[7] 18Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. 19One of you will say to me: "Then why does God still blame us? For who resists his will?" 20But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?' "[8] 21Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use? 22What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath--prepared for destruction? 23What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory-- 24even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? This guidance from God's Word seems to go counter to the age-old position of His desire "that all men repent." The only conclusion I can come up with (and has been taught to me) is that God helps those who deceive themselves into their own world of self-deception. In other words, every time one lies to his conscience, it gets easier and easier because eventually our conscience gets burned out. Again, let me repeat one of God's main themes in His Word is the complete freedom of choice He gives in choosing to follow Him or His archfiend, the devil. If we choose the latter over and over again and again, knowing or at least suspecting everything is not quite right, God will help us get comfortable with that "not quite right." But if we earnestly and sincerely ask for God's guidance concerning His Word, then I believe He will re-activate our conscience and hopefully we should discover the true message behind that portion of scripture. Any response? God bless. |

592 | Question from a newbie | Luke 14:26 | Rowdy | 110323
I, too, would like to offer a word or two of support and encouragement. I think you're doing the right thing in following God and His Word. Sure, all of us that have been associated with God's family and have lived on the earth for a while could cite many, many examples of such hypocrisy and other sinful behavior. In some few cases, it may stem from naive lack of knowledge but most often it's a situation of someone who has deceived him/herself into their own undoing. But how can this kind of logic make any sense when we're talking about where you and I and everyone will spend our eternity? The person drowning in the ocean doesn't ask about the integrity of everyone of the rescue boat; he just climbs aboard and hangs on for dear life. And here's a bonus: Just maybe, you'll discover a bunch of christians who really do believe God's Word AND obeys it and maybe even lead your parents by your example to their salvation. Going home to Heaven with God is so much better when you die knowing your family is going with you. I pray God helps you in this endeavor. |

593 | Why? | Luke 17:3 | Rowdy | 120949
I have to agree with the great amount of wisdom as exhibited time and time again from EdB. Let's pause and remember that within our very own American borders, we have a militant arm of so-called "christianity." They're not really, for they subscribe to the ways of the devil and not Christ as they kill and advocate killing of those practicing abortion, especially those in the medical community doing these procedures. So, what's my point? My point is that ALL religions world-wide have those who take their good and sincere, well written creeds or religious guidance and abuse them for their own gain of power and lust, thus exposing their true master, the devil himself. Remember as has been posted, we should get angry with the sin and love the sinner, following the example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We MUST do everything in our power to keep our tempers in check, look at ourselves through the eyes of God, by studying His Word. Then and only then will we be able to maintain the absolute necessary quality of humility toward our fellow man. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

594 | Be real our self and self value. | Luke 18:13 | Rowdy | 116164
The single best example I can think of to show us what God is truly after is shown in the contrast between King Saul and King David. We see God's treatment of Saul in 1 Sam 15:21 "But the people took some of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the choicest of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the LORD your God at Gilgal." 22 Samuel said, "Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 23 "For rebellion is as the sin of divination, And insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has also rejected you from being king." but for David, God feels differently as we see in Acts 13:21 "Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 "After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, 'I HAVE FOUND DAVID the son of Jesse, A MAN AFTER MY HEART, who will do all My will.' 23 "From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, So what is the real contrast we are to see here? Remember, both these men were sinful but David was truly repentant and tried to do his best. He was humble and willing to submit to God's chistisement. For example: He readily accepted God's decision that he not build the temple but he helped get some of the material together so his son, Solomon could build it. So our God wants His people to realize their position in the world: we are the creation, the creature and He is the One and only Creator. We only have His Grace and Love that allows us to hope we have a Home in Heaven. We are merely vessels thru which God's light might shine if we will allow It. There's absolutely nothing you and I could possibly do to earn this noble reward. All we can do is to comply with God's instructions and hope and pray that we meet His qualifications when we reach Judgment Day. So you see, in the final view, our self value is not worth much. That's not to say we should end our lives; only God should do that. BUT we MUST see the order of things/values in God's eyes. God bless. We must do everything in our power to practice, practice, practice Godliness here on earth and wait for Him to call us home. But we must do this practicing with God's attitude of love and compassion for our fellow man but love and devotion to our God and Father. God bless all those who study and obey God's Word. |

595 | What is the answer to this question? | Luke 20:4 | Rowdy | 123330
I would have to say the act itself was probably started by Jewish custom but linking it to a Godly purpose such as repentance was His idea. In my mind, baptism is a complete show of total submission. Most people don't relish the idea of coming out of a baptistry completely wet; it's rather embarassing, especially to come out and hug everyone but that's the point. It's a humbling process that we all must go through if we truly want to go to Heaven. I can't think of a verse that specifically answers this question so I'll just submit my opinion. God bless. --Rowdy |

596 | What is the answer to this question? | Luke 20:4 | Rowdy | 123332
Notice in verse 21, Peter says "Corresponding to that." Even back in the first century, folks recognized the value of understanding God's Word in context. 1 Pet 3:18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you--not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him. I realize you and I will never agree on a few issues, this being one of them but I do enjoy discussing them with you. Thanks for your patience and God bless. --Rowdy |

597 | What is the answer to this question? | Luke 20:4 | Rowdy | 123343
Thank you very much. That was very enlightening. I've always wondered how and why the practice of baptisms got started. Your post makes a lot of sense. God bless. --Rowdy
598 | What is the answer to this question? | Luke 20:4 | Rowdy | 123345
The horribly awful answer to your question is Yes. I've already experienced a family member (my own sister) who is no longer faithful. She grew up in the same home as my brother and myself and my other sister. But our two alligences are quite different. My father gets quite emotional about it, especially since he was an elder and is now in his eighties. Ocassionally we talk about her but we just resign ourselves to just loving her. Some things just can't be changed but then Jesus did warn us this would happen. So yes, I speak from experience; that's why I say it's horribly awful for indeed it is. God bless. --Rowdy PS: As far as the proverbial "death bed confession," that my friend is something I leave to God and do so with much gratitude. |

599 | What is the answer to this question? | Luke 20:4 | Rowdy | 123348
To me personally, if a person were to say that to a new convert in my presence, I would have pull that person aside and counsel them that they should be more concerned with dispensing the love of God through their ministry than showing off their ability to speak in a questionable language. 1 Cor 13 makes this very, very clear. Love outranks everything else we do as christians. It MUST be paramount to everyone that is our top priority. In this scenario, a person should be willing to take a little discouragement since they are the stronger person of faith as per Paul's instructions. Just my opinion. God bless. --Rowdy |

600 | cups? | Luke 22:17 | Rowdy | 115908
In the ancient world (NT age), the ritual of passing around a cup of wine didn't present all the problems with which we deal in this modern world. There really shouldn't be anything wrong with a congregation of the Lord's family partaking from the same cup as is done in some groups. But it does come with some small risks as visitors and strangers come into the midst and might partake BUT they may leave something behind like tobacco juice or some form of disease or bacteria. So the modern practice of dividing the fruit of the vine into a multitude of cups is just a practical matter, just like "church buildings" and song books, the practice of Sunday School for Bible study, which are also not in the Bible. I hope this clears up the controversy, at least a little bit. God bless. |
