401 | Would someone explain Isaiah 6. | Is 6:1 | Rowdy | 110348
I would agree with most everything in your answer except for the portion about the stump of tree. I would refer you to Paul's Letter to the Romans, Chap 15. Here Paul concludes that the remnant from that tree is God's very own Son, Jesus Christ. This is consistent with most of the OT. Throughout the history of the Israelite nation, God kept helping and blessing a remnant of His family so His Son could be born in accordance with the promise He made to Abraham. It was this remnant or root of Jesse, His Son who came to earth to die for the sins of everyone and provide the utlimate sacrifice, taking our place in God's perfect world of justice and redemption. I don't really believe the Jewish nation has anything to do with any special recognition or any other function in this Christian age. Jews should be treated just like they were in the first century; they can become christians just like you and me. God turned His back forever on the Isrealites as a nation. No one nation, not even the USA can claim any special relationship with him, only His children through the blood of His Son can claim that special relationship of fatherhood with God as Father and Jesus Christ as the saviour. Remember our God is a Spirit and we as His children must look forward to giving up this physical world and graduate to the next world, hopfully covered by the blood of Christ. Otherwise we fall into the hand of God, woefully unprepared. God bless. |

402 | Is it sin to smoke a cigarette? | Is 44:1 | Rowdy | 114084
I realize Paul's instructions to the Corinthians is about sexual immorality but it sets a basic principle about our bodes in general. 1 Cor 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. If you'll check with any reformed ex-smoker or ex-drug user, they'll all tell you the same thing. That "stuff" in the human body becomes a monster, controlling your every waking moment. Indeed to most, it becomes a god so it most CERTAINLY IS a sin in our Father's eyes. I know this subject so well, not through experience as I have taken a few puffs of a cirgaret once in my life, many decades ago but my father was addicted and he's told me many times about how bad it got and the after affects to this day. If this is not enough, read again the scriptures below and tell me you can all in good conscience tell us that you'll be able to meet God at Judgment Day with a cirgaret in your hands or in your mouth. Yes, I know these verses are about eating but don't you see the folks in the 1st century didn't know anything about smoking tobacco. They did know about drinking alcohol to excess and that is also condemned so again the principle is quite clear. Rom 14:22 The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin. Please, I would beg you, DON'T give encouragement to anyone who is hooked on this junk and let him think God won't hold them accountable. We need to help educate people like this and love their souls enough to tell them the truth. I do hope you'll reconsider. There are far more damaging, long term effects than just the image you mentioned. God bless you in your study. |

Naturally, I'm assuming your post is directed to me instead of Gratefully Dead, as it contains most of the words from my post. (For future reference, it helps if you click on the post of whom you are directing your reply. But no harm done.) I realize that the Bible doesn't come out clearly and specifically condemn smoking per sae. But it is very clear that it is condemned by God so you see it's not I that is condemning this act, it's God. I'm merely allowing God's true light of truth shine through me just Peter and John when they were told by city officials to hush their preaching; what did they say? "Who are we to obey men or God?" We can and should do no more and no less. In reference to the other points of your message, I don't agree. God certainly does NOT condemn the consumption of alcohol IF it's not abused to excess. Same for any drug. The key here is moderation and what is it being used for. If for healing, good; if for an escape, not good at all. As I mentioned in my post, we should do all with complete faith as if we're doing a particular act in the actual physical prescence of God as that's the standard He'll be judging us. And of course no one can possibly defend any of these kind of abusive activities under such a standard. Now, please don't misunderstand. I know several members in my own congregation who are battling that awful monster of tobacco as you are. Their prayer is to get away from it but they slip up and give in ocassionally. That's where God's grace kicks in and covers us as His children. As long as we're sincerely trying our best to stay in God's good graces and beg forgiveness from Him through prayer when we fall short, His grace covers for our sins. I hope this is clear and God richest blessings on you. |

I provide scriptures to support my statement and you criticize. I make statements w/o scriptures and you criticize. I'm confused. Why don't you take a second look at my posts on this subject and present a logical statement that clearly OPPOSES the overall sentiment of my post. I do hope you're going to be a little more objective to my participation on this Forum. But as always I pray God blesses you with patience and tolerance for your fellow man and our weaknesses. Let me "hear" from you. Thanks. |

405 | Is it sin to smoke a cigarette? | Is 44:1 | Rowdy | 114248
I agree it's a conclusion that is drawn from God's Word on my part. But I do think it is a solid conclusion, one that is in agreement with the vast majority of christians, especially those who know their Bibles. BUT I don't want to cause a large controversy over this. I'm satisfied that those on the Forum who needed these words of encouragement and truth will get them from the few posts as cited. Believe it or not, I'm not striving to add or take anything away from God's Word. I'm just like you and the rest of those participating on this Forum. Yes, I too have my weaknesses and they're probably too many for a christian of my age and my background. But I think we all have to recognize the tremendous gift of grace from God above. But in order to qualify for that gift on a daily basis, we have to maintain a constant relationship with God and let him know through prayer that we really do intend to reform or repent from our sins every day. Now, don't get me wrong. When and if we give up on God for a period of time, it's easy to get back in His family and ask God's family for forgiveness, encouragement and support. This tenuious relationship with God is fragile only because we as humans have a difficult time being truly faithful. Again, we need to keep uppermost in our minds it's only by the Grace of God that any of us make it to Heaven. I hope this makes my position clear and God bless. Thanks for your post. |

407 | does god know everything in the future? | Is 53:1 | Rowdy | 116215
He not only knew it; He promised it as shown below: Gen 3:14 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel." The main purpose in keeping the Jewish bloodline pure was to keep the people ready for the birth of His Son. The books of the prophets, especially Isaiah is full of prophecies on the life, ministry, death, burial and resurrection of His Son; check Is 53. Yes, our God knows all and is everywhere all the time yet He allows our freedom of choice as shown in the Garden of Eden. God bless. |

408 | Please explain Isaiah 60 verse 1 | Is 60:1 | Rowdy | 115907
You have to remember Isaiah was written much in the same way as Daniel and Revelation with a great deal of figurative language. Thus, it is difficult to interpret which portions are to be taken literally and which is figurative. In this case, it looks mostly figurative and I think he's talking about the coming of the Lord's Kingdom in this dispensation after Christianity is established in Jerusalem. But that's my perspective and I'm sure you'll get others. What do you think of this chapter? God bless. |

I'm afraid I'm at a loss for words for once. I can't think of a thing to add. I would suggest sticking to the traditional handling of God's Word as it appears whenever possible. But I still wish for God's blessings on your continued study. I'll be interested in seeing what other Forum participants think about this.
410 | Matthew's apparent quote of Jeremiah | Jeremiah | Rowdy | 118959
Jer 19:1 This is what the LORD says: "Go and buy a clay jar from a potter. Take along some of the elders of the people and of the priests 2 and go out to the Valley of Ben Hinnom, near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. There proclaim the words I tell you, 3 and say, 'Hear the word of the LORD , O kings of Judah and people of Jerusalem. This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Listen! I am going to bring a disaster on this place that will make the ears of everyone who hears of it tingle. 4 For they have forsaken me and made this a place of foreign gods; they have burned sacrifices in it to gods that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah ever knew, and they have filled this place with the blood of the innocent. 5 They have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as offerings to Baal-something I did not command or mention, nor did it enter my mind. 6 So beware, the days are coming, declares the LORD , when people will no longer call this place Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. 7 " 'In this place I will ruin the plans of Judah and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, at the hands of those who seek their lives, and I will give their carcasses as food to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth. 8 I will devastate this city and make it an object of scorn; all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff because of all its wounds. 9 I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another's flesh during the stress of the siege imposed on them by the enemies who seek their lives.' 10 "Then break the jar while those who go with you are watching, 11 and say to them, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I will smash this nation and this city just as this potter's jar is smashed and cannot be repaired. They will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room. 12 This is what I will do to this place and to those who live here, declares the LORD . I will make this city like Topheth. 13 The houses in Jerusalem and those of the kings of Judah will be defiled like this place, Topheth-all the houses where they burned incense on the roofs to all the starry hosts and poured out drink offerings to other gods.' " Matthew is referring to both the passage above from Jeremiah AND to the prophecy from Zechariah. It's not presented that way in Matthew but then Matthew's peers knew their scrolls much better than you and I know our OT. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

411 | How is the Word like fire and a hammer? | Jeremiah | Rowdy | 119692
Cited for context Jer 23:28 "The prophet who has a dream may relate his dream, but let him who has My word speak My word in truth. What does straw have in common with grain?" declares the LORD. 29 "Is not My word like fire?" declares the LORD, "and like a hammer which shatters a rock? 30 "Therefore behold, I am against the prophets," declares the LORD, "who steal My words from each other. 31 "Behold, I am against the prophets," declares the LORD, "who use their tongues and declare, 'The Lord declares.' 32 "Behold, I am against those who have prophesied false dreams," declares the LORD, "and related them and led My people astray by their falsehoods and reckless boasting; yet I did not send them or command them, nor do they furnish this people the slightest benefit," declares the LORD. It seems rather clear that God's Word as cited throughout the Bible should be considered a weapon, especially against false teachers. His Word should ALWAYS be used to "test everything" or to "inspect a brother's works (his fruits)" as cited in 1 Thes 5:21 and Col 1:10. So you see, the Word of God is a wonderful and versitle tool. It's a comfort and full of solutions to those full of Godliness, hungering and thirsting for righteousness but for those that have their own agenda, they must answer to God. We do well to remind them which is done most powerfully when we show them God's Word through our lives as His children in our obedience. For some never read or study seriously His Word and must rely on you and me to show them, hoping and praying they will be inspired to study God's Word on their own. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

412 | "Ah, Sovereign LORD ," I said, "I do not | Jeremiah | Rowdy | 122212
It's difficult to interpret correctly what all these symbols mean but it is helpful to remember that Jeremiah was the weeping prophet. He saw the coming doom of his nation and knew that his people were doing this to themselves. God was trying to motivate the Israelites to repent and come back to Him. I'm afraid I don't really know what the symbol of the almond tree meant to the Jewish people but hopefully you'll get another response from the Forum with that answer. God bless. --Rowdy |

413 | Explain in details Jeremiah 10:2-4 | Jer 10:2 | Rowdy | 108401
I just read it so my first response is that God is just warning us as His children not to be senstitive to every new thing that develops in the public world. Fashions come and go as do rumors of war and peace. We as God's children need to put our faith and trust in God as He truly is in charge of the whole creation and knows all our wants and needs. Some folks may take this passage to imply that they can find and read the right signs in the sky or anyplace else and predict the pending doom of the world and judgement day, etc. I differ with that kind of thinking and point to the words of Jesus. He said the end of the world would come "like a thief in the night." I don't think anyone will be expecting it when the actual end happens, just like in the days of Noah. As we are shown in the Book of Job, if the worse comes and we lose everything, including our very lives, we should still rely on God to bring us home. The tragedies of this world are mainly caused by the sin in the world but we can minimize their happening to us by living Godly lives. But the bottom line message from Job is that God wants us to get over our addiction for the physical world and instead get hooked on the idea of spending eternity with Him in heaven. I agree, this takes work, a lifetime of hard work to truly believe and have faith of this depth. Hope to see you there. God bless. |

414 | "and on their heart I will write it" | Jer 31:33 | Rowdy | 115313
We see the fulfillment of this prophecy from Jeremiah in the establishment of the Lord's church roughly about 33 AD. God delegated His authority to rule over such matters as cited below. Matt 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Thus we see the transition from the OT to the NT with a much covenant, with much better promises. This is made very clear in Heb 10. The whole book Hebrews is devoted to contrasting the superiority of Christ's covenant with that of the Law of Moses. Don't get me wrong and misunderstand about the 10 commandments. Indeed, 9 of the 10 are quoted by the NT and are expanded upon. For example, we are not only to avoid "murder" with "Thou shalt not kill," now we are love and even forgive our enemies instead of going with "an eye for an eye." But the best thing about discarding the authority of the OT for us as modern christians: we get to experience true freedom from our sins. In OT era, God's people didn't have a clear picture of redemption nor did they have a clear picture of Heaven. Now we have those and much more. Our High Priest is the very Son of God whereas their's was the current son of the Levite tribe. We get to pray directly to God our Father as truly adopted sons, with Christ as our senior brother, acting as a intermediary. Yes, there's so much for which we have to be thankful. God bless all who read and obey God's Word. |

415 | Can the Hubble measure the universe? | Jer 31:37 | Rowdy | 141883
Response to the two main points of your post: 1. I'm just now reading a very interesting book, edited by John F. Ashton, PhD. The title: "In Six Days." The subtitle: Why 50 Scientists Choose to Believe in Creation. It's quite powerful as all 50 of these scientists have PhDs in their respective science AND they're not just "flunkies" rejected by the science community. Each one has made major contributions to the science community and is quite successful in his/her own world. The 50 different sciences cover the whole spectrum from Astronomy to Zoology and everything in between. (The book even addresses the subject related to Information or Computer Science.) It's divided into 2 main sections: the first dealing with Science and Origins and the second dealing with Religion and Origins. You might also benefit by checking out the website, www.apologeticspress.org by Dr. Bert Thompson. 2. There are a multitude of scriptures in the Bible that speak to this rather difficult topic of the "End of Times" but the most powerful AND overriding statement is from our Lord Himself. Jesus says that the ultimate end of the world will come upon the world like a thief in the night and thus no one will know when that might be. I don't think no one will even come close to guessing when this might happen. I'm convinced we spend far too much time dwelling and discussing this subject. It doesn't really add anything to the whole of Christianity. Most often it causes bad feeling and much confusion for most of the people who do spend their time with this topic. I do hope my words here encourage you to seek other more useful and productive topics. God bless. Rowdy |

417 | Lucider satan? | Ezek 28:12 | Rowdy | 117759
I was not able to find any mention of Lucifer in my Bible in Gateway or the Forum but I did find a rather interesting website, see below. Just a word of caution as it seems to be coming from the Mormans. I'm not Morman nor do I endorse any of their abberant beliefs. www.lds-mormon.com/lucifer.shtml But I guess we can study history, from which they claim this is coming. God bless. --Rowdy |

418 | is the seed non-human? | Dan 2:43 | Rowdy | 133552
You ask/pose some very tough questions, none of which I can answer with any high degree of confidence. I can only notice from history that God is incredibly patient and if the vast majority of "the whole world thinks only wickedness all the time" like it was in Noah's time, it might be close to the end of the world. But I don't think the world is quite that bad and another thing: I'm convinced as long as they are a substantial number of people looking for the Lord's second coming like we have in today's world, IMO I think that's another reason we're NOT close to the end of the world. As I'm sure you know very well, the Lord promised us His second coming would be like a thief in the night and NO ONE expects a thief in the night. So, with these two solid factors to consider, I think the Lord MIGHT let us live/exist for a little while longer. In answer to your other question, I just simply don't have a clue. If a person is alive as a result of being cloned, does He have a soul or not? I'd like to think so. I guess it'll depend on whether or not he has an innate conscience telling him right from wrong. We'll just have to wait and see and then there's the matter in the legal court system. Will the courts grant him full legal citizenship and voting rights and everything else a natural born person expects from this life? Yes, some very tough questions for us and our descendents to deal with. Lord, help us make the decisions you would endorse as being Your Will. God bless us all during this trial. Rowdy |

419 | is the seed non-human? | Dan 2:43 | Rowdy | 133570
Matt 24 is a very controversial chapter as Christ is talking about two different major events. This subject has been discussed to great lengths here on the Forum and just in case you need to know you can insert key words like "end times" in the Quick Search to retrieve those posts for your reading pleasure. Briefly, my belief along with many millions of christians from around the world is that Jesus was talking about the ultimate ending of the world and its disintegration as depicted by Peter. This was what I was referring to with the reference to the thief at night. The second major event as discussed by Jesus in this chapter is the pending doom and destruction of the Israelite nation as God's favored family. I suppose you already know on or about 70 AD, the Roman army completely destroyed the Temple, to the point they even melted the gold from between the column joints supporting that structure. They completely destroyed ALL the records of the Jewish family so that no one to this day can trace his roots back to Moses as required by Jewish custom to prove their nationality. You see, there's no clear scriptures that definitely descibes the rapture or this thousand year reign here on earth. All that is a lot of conjecture on someone's part with a few vauge verses giving very weak support. But in contrast we do know there will always be strife, wars and rumors of wars on this planet as long as it exists. Jesus did tell us that. And as I stated about the ultimate end of the world, no one can possibly know when it will happen. The trumpet could blow the very next second and I'd be as suprised as everyone else. The most important item of learning we all need to know is to be like the 5 wise virgins waiting for the coming of the bridegroom. That much was also clearly communicated from our Lord. Hope this helps and God bless. Rowdy |

420 | Connection between Daniel 9:11 and US? | Dan 9:11 | Rowdy | 123320
This is really the most preposterous idea I've seen in a long while. Hopefully, you are aware that division of the Bible into chapter and verses didn't take place until late in the Medevil Period of the world, possibly as late as the 1300s. That's thousands of years after Daniel was written. No, my friend, whatever possible link between the attack in NY City date and the Bible is purely coincidental. For example: Why would you want to limit to Daniel? Why not Isaiah or Revelation? Sorry, but I do hope you don't waste most of your time looking for this kind trivial trash, do you? God bless. --Rowdy |
