561 | grace after death | 2 Pet 3:10 | Rowdy | 118197
2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. I don't know anything about a second form of grace apart from what we read in our Bibles. Grace will be most important to us on Judgment Day when God considers how we lived our lives here on earth. The gap between our imperfect lives and His perfect standard as in His Son will be made up by this Grace IF we have the right relationship with His Son's blood. Anything concerning this physical world will be all destroyed and thus of no consequence. God bless. --Rowdy |

562 | Do we have to earn grace? | Gal 2:21 | Rowdy | 118192
Just to give this thread some balance, let's not forget what James says in James 2:14 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. 18 But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works." 19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. Also from Jesus Himself in Matt 7:15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. 21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' So you see it's a balancing act. Yes most definitely we're ALL hopelessly lost without grace, you can count on it BUT our Lord expects to see us show up on Judgment day with fruit of our labors in His vineyard. Works in this scenario is another word for fruit, call it proof of the spirit that lives within us. If we don't have works in our favor, how can we prove to our Lord we are His? In other words, if a 1st century judge persecuting christians comes knocking on our door, will you and I be found guilty like those martyrs of long ago? Yes, tough call, I agree. God bless. --Rowdy |

563 | what is jesus saying about heaven. | Matt 13:24 | Rowdy | 118164
Cited the whole thing, verses 24-48 for reference. Not really sure why you excluded those particular verses. This is one of the few parables Jesus provides His own interpretation to His disciples. Matt 13:24 Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 "But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. 26 "But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. 27 "The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?' 28 "And he said to them, 'An enemy has done this!' The slaves *said to him, 'Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?' 29 "But he *said, 'No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 'Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.""' 31 He presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32 and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES." 33 He spoke another parable to them, "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened." 34 All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS HIDDEN SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD." 36 Then He left the crowds and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field." 37 And He said, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil one; 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are angels. 40 "So just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age. 41 "The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 "Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. 44 "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind; 48 and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away. Now concerning verses 44-48: more parables and these are pretty simple to interpret. The key to understanding most of the Lord's parables is to look for one or two points which the Lord is trying to make. It's a mistake to turn a parable into a allegory where every character represents something specific in our world. Here with the latter parables Jesus is trying to depict how valuable and wonderful the Kingdom of God is and will be. Also, a picture of the fact that only a select few will end up in the Kingdom. What more do you see in them? Is there something more specific that I'm missing? God bless. --Rowdy |

564 | Was the church embarassed? Come see. | Gal 2:11 | Rowdy | 118158
I'd almost forgotten about this post of mine... Well, my little question only got you two to respond so I'll give you my chop on the matter. EdB and Parable: I was striving to solicit your response/answer to the deeper question but maybe it wasn't clear. Both Paul and Peter were inspired by the same Holy Spirit and yet this happened and to me this seem a "biggie" as it surely should have embarrassed the church, especially those gathered at this time. So my question is: Why would the Holy Spirit allow such an infraction to go on with Peter in spite of his realization that God had placed His seal of approval on the whole Gentile nation being added to the body of Christ as cited earlier in Acts 10 and 11? I'm drawing another conclusion here so beware. In my mind the only reason why the Holy Spirit allowed this confrontation to display itself was to make a point for all time, for all of us throughout the world. Yes, the Holy Spirit descended on Cornelius and his household but you know us humans. Most of us like yours truly like to go back to the School of Hard Knocks. Me, I'm working on my PhD. The Holy Spirit had to make certain that all of us got the point. He wants the whole world to know that ALL of mankind knows we're all entitled to go to Heaven. God's Plan of Salvation is for every living human since the ressurrection of our Lord. Sometimes, we see this kind of special emphasis in other places. For example: we see Paul and Barnabas split up on their missionary journey because of Mark's immaturity. Paul takes Silas and Barnabas goes with Mark. My point is the Bible shows all the good AND bad of the major characters of the Bible. Everyone gets the same treatment. The second point is that even we christians can disagree now and again on a minor point but we still MUST maintain the harmony in the body for which our Lord prayed His last prayer on earth. I would be remiss if I failed to mention Paul's accepting Mark back into his closest circle with 2 Tim 4:11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. This also answers (at least in my mind) why Paul told the story in Galations. Well, what do you think? Am I all wet? God bless. --Rowdy |

565 | Who is this "slave"? | Matt 24:45 | Rowdy | 118152
Good post; I would only add Luke 22:26 "But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. Luke 22:27 "For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. Jesus showed us the perfect example of a servant when he washed the feet of His own disciples. God bless. --Rowdy |

566 | what is a citation,echo and allusion | Revelation | Rowdy | 118150
Found a website for you with lots of stuff about all 3 of these terms but it's all about symbols and unusual conclusions in Revelation. So I would urge caution. So many of these kind of writings from common men are filled with a lot of junk and they don't seem to harmonize with the Bible as a whole. But here it is: www.andrews.edu AGAIN, I would urge you to study God's Word and give It first preference far above anything else written in this world. God bless you in your study of His Word. Above all, one should NOT base a whole new philosophy different to the Word of God when we're strictly forbidden to do so even if it comes from "angels." Instead we should treat it as a false teaching or false doctrine IAW Gal 1:6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- 7which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! God bless. --Rowdy |

I can't say I agree with all of your statement but I must admit you did give me a lot to "chew on." I always learn something every time I log onto this website. Bless you, dear friend for your patience and your perseverance. Several of your points are quite powerful and I plan to use them in my next sermon on the subject. Especially powerful is the analogy between Jesus and the son, Isaac, both carrying wood for their own sacrifice and Mount Moriah on the same mountain range. That's heavy. God bless. --Rowdy |

568 | Who is this "slave"? | Matt 24:45 | Rowdy | 118144
Cited for reference: Matt 24:45 "Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 "Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes. 47 "Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 "But if that evil slave says in his heart, 'My master is not coming for a long time,' 49 and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards; 50 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know, 51 and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. I must admit, this seems fairly straight forward and plain to me but then, maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way and I'm sure you'll several other responses. To me the slave mentioned in verse 45 is the same main character cited throughout this parable of Christ. He's just emphasizing His point about the end of the world and how some people will be found, doing things they wouldn't dream of doing IF they had an "iota" of an idea that the end of the world is about to descend upon them. What do you think? God bless. --Rowdy |

I've been looking for scripture to back up my position and I must admit the only ones I can find are those already cited about Jesus cry asking His Father why He forsook Him and the extended period of darkness. I may be suffering from a lifetime of being taught this conclusion based on these verses so I'll continue looking for something more specific. BUT maybe I can ask what is YOUR response to these verses? Do you have an explanation as to why these actions happened AND are cited in the Bible for our benefit? One more verse, unrelated to the discussion above but might be an answer to your question: 1 Pet 3:18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. Do you think God went to this prison with His Son after He died here on earth? I shouldn't think so but I'll try to be open-minded. I'd be interested in seeing your response to this verse. God bless. --Rowdy |

Yes, you figured out I didn't paste the quote from your post to mine very well. Usually don't do that very much. My apologies. As to your challenges, the only way I can figure that anyone might see Satan in Heaven is if he were to repent and ask forgiveness from God. In spite of this guidance coming from a parable, I think it applies. Mt 25:41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. So apparently God has already condemned Satan and his angels and thus Satan has no chance for repenting of his sins. Is there scripture for any portion of your post above or are you joining the ranks of us philosophers and drawing your own conclusions? You seem to have a spirit of anger with most of your posts, especially when you run into someone who disagrees with you. Would you like to unburden yourself with whatever is bothering you? If so, I'll share my own personal E-Mail with you and I'll promise to keep it in strict confidence. I can only remind you the one single time, our Lord got angry was with those who were desicrating His Father's temple and we're all to imitate Jesus as indicated in your profile. I do hope you'll respond in kind. God bless. --Rowdy |

I'd like to say an hearty Amen to your post but I just wanted to add this supplemental thought with which I'm hoping your agree. I think this separation from God was truly a new experience for our Lord. As we see throughout the Gospels, He was intensely at one with His Father at all times. It almost seems that's the only thing that kept him going, he pushed himself so hard, feeling an incredible amount of compassion for the lost souls around him, the sick and dying. So, when He knew all these sins of the world would separate Him from the Father for a relatively short period, He knew He would face death on His own AND whatever fate awaited Him in Hell. He went to that cross with complete and total faith in His Father's plan. Just seems like an incredibly scary thing to me. I keep emphasizing this point because for me, it makes the fact very clear that he really does know what we're going through being human and facing difficulties in this world. He's been there, far more than we could ever imagine. This much love for you and me. What an amazing God and Father we all have?!! God bless. --Rowdy |

As I've stated before in other posts and briefly in my profile, I do prefer to go for the deeper, more probing question like this one. I like to discuss Bible truths and principles, both basic and ocassionally even the tough stuff. I would like to stress that I think our God does expect us to mature and share our thoughts with all His children, especially if our intent is to build them up and encourage us all to keep growing, keep maturing and strive to reach for new heights in teaching each other. I must also stress if we choose to a ministry such as this we MUST do so with love (real genuine God like love), thus I must apologize for my ocassional lapse in weakness when I let the human side "peek out" in me. I do enjoy participating on the Forum as I'm sure you do but I would also re-emphasize another one of my previous points and that is the fact I'm just holding down my end of this level playing field. There's many of you like yourself who are very good at "quoting book, chapter and verse." Me, it takes a lot of work thus I choose carefully and I'm honestly trying to support my posts with just a little bit more scriptures than my earliest posts after considering all of yours and Hank's critiques. So call me a philosophical fool like Socrates who committed suicide rather than deal with the cold harsh world he lived in. Hopefully, I'll succeed in some small victories and I'll gladly settle for that. But alas I almost forgot. You haven't responded to my challenges, the ones I offered to Hank and to the whole Forum. If you need the Post nos, I'll look them up for you. I'm trying to remember some of the key words but they escape me at the moment. Appreciate your response and God bless. --Rowdy |

575 | The last 7 words of Christ | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 118123
Our preacher did a masterful job of preaching on this very subject. I'll try to render it here as accurately as I can. Words Spoken on the Cross 1. PRAYER: Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. Lk 23:34 Others during that timeframe on other crosses of crucifixtions would oftentimes shout out curses to their executionors, sometimes so much so that the soilders would be instructed to climb up on their bloody body while on the cross and cut off their tongue to prevent them from speaking. Interesting extreme contrast with words of forgiveness from our Lord. 2. PROMISE: And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. Lk 23:43 Remember earlier this same thief joined in ridiculing Christ but he has a change of heart, the only human being to repent who didn't have a right to expect anything and yet he asks. Jesus graciously rewarded him. 3. PROVISION: When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple standing by, whom He loved, He saith unto His mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold they mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. Jn 19:26 Most interesting that Jesus would ask one of His disciples to do this rather than one of His own earthly brothers. Very powerful example of great responsibility for one's parents. 4. POSITION: Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken Me? Matt 27:45 Here, Christ took on the sins of the world and paid the ultimate price for us. Here God turned His back in "memory" of His Son as He couldn't face all this sin on His Son. 5. PAIN: After, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Jn 19:28 In spite of His pain, He refused the wine and vinegar as it would have acted as a drug. This way He can emphatized with us as humans, knowing full well the total price He paid for our sins. 6. PERFECTION: When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed His head, and gave up the ghost. Jn 19:30 Finally, He finished the job and a good job at that. He could say the battle is done and gave His blood to that end. 7. PRESENTATION: And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into they hands I commend my spirit: and have said thus, he gave up the ghost. Jesus put all His faith in His Father and His plan to redeem all mankind AND to endure Hell without His Father but all on His own. BUT He did triumph and is no longer in that grave but is on the right hand of God with all power and authority. ------------------------------------------------ I can only hope I've done some small credit to the great sermon given by Bob and God's Word. God bless. --Rowdy |

576 | making it to heaven after you get saved | 1 John 3:9 | Rowdy | 118122
I'd like to throw in another comment to those good ones already provided: Rev 2:8 "To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. 9I know your afflictions and your poverty-yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death. I rarely quote from this book as to me it's so controversial and difficult to understand but I take comfort in these 7 letters written directly from our Lord to His children in these different cities. I think it does us good to review them, both for us on an individual basis as well as from a congregation perspective. The one above is one of the seven in which our Lord does NOT have any words of criticism or a harsh rebuke, just words of praise and encouragement to keep the faith. That is the most important directive to us as christians in verse 10 to "Be faithful, even to death." God bless. --Rowdy |

577 | Sanctification - set apart FOR God's us? | Acts | Rowdy | 118121
Well said and Amen! However, I would like to add a thought or two. We should remember James 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. This is also part of the sanctification process and I'm thinking this nation is approaching such a time and need of purification. It does seem that God might visit some discipline to us, His children as cited in Heb 12:4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son." 7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. 12Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13"Make level paths for your feet," so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed. God bless all those who study and obey God's Word. --Rowdy |

Re: "turn His back to His own Son" 33At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" We know that God hates sin so why else would He have darkness come over the earth at such a time when His Son is fulfilling the Father's plan so perfectly? How do you explain this and the verse above? Re: little apprehensive about going to hell Lk 22:42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. And Matt 26:38. What else could be troubling Jesus so as to cause this much anxiety? What is your explanation? Re: devil's keeping Christ in Hell, I would refer you to my post no 118115. As you have already surmised, my previous post has much conjecture and conclusions but that is to be expected when a person asks Why. Would you mind telling me why this is such an alien concept to you and Hank and others that are so harsh in reading and criticizing my posts? I've explained this numerous times about the fact that many times the Bible does NOT give a clear cut and specific answer to every imaginable question so God does expect us to use our minds and conclude proper conclusions from the Spirit of His Word. I would sincerely appreciate your response. Thanks. Also maybe you can explain why no one wants to respond to my challenges from several weeks ago wherein I DO cite several scriptures? God bless. --Rowdy |

579 | How often must we die and be born again? | Acts 8:22 | Rowdy | 118116
I can only respond with scripture as follows: 1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us. This seems pretty clear to me but basically it means as long as we established and accepted that initial gift of salvation as cited in Acts 2:38, then our biggest obstacle keeping us out of Heaven thereafter is our own human tendancy to keep sinning (either omission of good deeds or an ocassional slip and some sinful action). We must recognize this tendancy in ourselves hourly or at least daily and be constantly ready for Christ's return as depicted in the marriage feast parable with ten virgins. Your response? --Rowdy |

What make you think that Satan had anything to do with anything connected with the Holiness of God; in you statement, “it would be enough for the Devil to keep Him there forever.” The devil has nothing to do with the perfect plan of God and he has nothing to do with hell or the lake of fire other then the fact that he will suffer there like all the rest that don’t fear God! OK, you've answered one question but you didn't respond to the one about the Devil's tempting Jesus in the desert after Jesus was baptized. IF there was NOT even a slight chance during this exchange of Jesus' slipping and sinning, then what's the purpose of this story in our Bible? Further, what's the value of Heb 4:15 if what you say is true? It seems you have a difficult explanation to craft together. But I await your reply. God bless. --Rowdy |
