24 | Jesus' Instruction to Nicodemus | John 3:14 | Ocelot | 173899
John, Your implication that Mark believes that man can save himself is (at least from what I know of Mark from his posts) a gross fabrication. If you were being swept downstream in a rushing river towards a waterfall, and someone tossed you a rope, after you were pulled to safety, would you claim to have saved yourself by grabbing the rope? Of course not! And you’re right about the Bible not recording anyone refusing to look at the brazen serpent. It was so easy to do. And yet, so is looking to Jesus. The analogy is PERFECT. Ocelot |

25 | Jesus' Instruction to Nicodemus | John 3:14 | Ocelot | 173868
Hi Doc. Thanks for this excellent quote. So according to Don Fortner, “There is a people scattered throughout the ages and realms of this world who are loved of God, a people whom God is determined to save.” And how, according to the scripture quoted, does God define those “people scattered throughout the ages… whom God is determined to save.”? “The WORLD” John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Praise God! 29 | Will natural affection go by the way? | Matt 5:9 | Ocelot | 173652
Hi Barbee, I don’t know the specifics of your situation. But if you’d like to make peace with your children, here’s what you should do. Admit you were wrong, and ask for your children’s forgiveness. If I were you, I would leave Satan out of it (Though he is very much at the center of it). It may not be a copout, but I can see how your children may see it that way (After all, aren’t ALL problems caused, to one degree or another, by Satan and sin?). I’d worry about YOUR part in the problem (and let God worry about Satan’s). Hopefully I haven’t horribly misunderstood you. :-) Matthew 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” With Christian Love, Ocelot |

31 | Remaking of the Will | Rom 8:7 | Ocelot | 173638
That's a good verse. But you should keep reading… Jeremiah 18:7-11 "At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it; if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it. Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it; if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it. So now then, speak to the men of Judah and against the inhabitants of Jerusalem saying, 'Thus says the LORD, "Behold, I am fashioning calamity against you and devising a plan against you. Oh turn back, each of you from his evil way, and reform your ways and your deeds." I’d say it balances itself out quite nicely. Ocelot |

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Joshua 24:15 "If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” Deut 30:19 "I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,” Isaiah 1:16-20 "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight…Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool. If you consent and obey, You will eat the best of the land; But if you refuse and rebel, You will be devoured by the sword. Truly, the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” Revelation 22:17 “The Spirit and the bride say, "Come." And let the one who hears say, "Come." And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.” John 1:12 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,” Titus 2:11 “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,” Ezekiel 33:11 "Say to them, 'As I live!' declares the Lord GOD, 'I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?'” |

35 | Can Satan read our minds? | Ps 94:11 | Ocelot | 172804
Thanks Mark, But I can't take any credit. I stumbled across that accidentally (or was it?) while I was trying to approach the question from an entirely different angle. That’s one of the best things about this forum, it encourages digging into the Word of God (which can only lead to great things). Ocelot |

36 | Can Satan read our minds? | Ps 94:11 | Ocelot | 172800
Hello annamrowe, I’m no Greek scholar, but here are two verses that I found that I believe logically prove that only God is able to search hearts and read minds. “…and He [The Holy Spirit] who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:27 And then in Revelation, Jesus says: “… And all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.” Revelation 2:23 In the first verse God the Holy Spirit is described as “…He who searches the hearts…”, and in the second verse God the Son is described as “…He who searches the minds and hearts…” If Satan (or any one else but God) was able to “search hearts and minds”, then the descriptive titles in those verses would be deceptive, in that God would not be the ONLY one who is able to search hearts and minds. But God doesn’t lie. Only God is able to read our minds. Ocelot |

38 | Adam born a man or baby | Bible general Archive 3 | Ocelot | 172792
Hello mrb7610, From all Biblical indications, Adam was created a fully formed and functional adult man (minus a belly button). For anyone to assume otherwise would be purely speculation, and not very good speculation at that, since the Bible seems to imply that Adam named all of the animals and got married on his first day of life :-) Ocelot |

39 | what if i can't pay all of my tithes? | Mal 3:10 | Ocelot | 172727
Hello vocab3802, And welcome to the forum. You asked quite a few questions. But I’ll try and address them. First off, I know from reading a few other threads on this forum, that not all Christians believe that tithing is necessary. Some believe that tithing was required of the Jews only. You clearly don’t believe that (incidentally neither do I), and so I’ll write this with that in mind. So here are a few verses from scripture that may help you figure this one out. Mark 12:41-44: “And He [Christ] sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on." Matthew 6:25-33 "For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?' For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” And finally, here is a beautiful promise. Malachi 3:10 "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” God said “Test Me”. Do you believe that God is telling the truth? Why not test Him in this? In Christian Love, Ocelot |

40 | "I'd like to use a lifeline" | Not Specified | Ocelot | 172430
Has anyone else noticed that it seems that there are a lot of people posting questions on the forum that sound a lot like they’re playing “Who Wants to be a Millionaire: Bible Edition”? :-) Is the Study Bible Forum a lifeline? Why would someone ask “What word is in the Bible four times?” Why would they think that there was such a word if they were not playing some kind of Bible “trivia” game? I don’t mean to offend anyone at all. I just find it somewhat amusing and curious. Any thoughts? In Christian Love, Ocelot |
