421 | Why should we pray to Mary? | 1 Tim 2:5 | Norrie | 26706
Come to think of it, now that you mention it, we would have had our butts tore up if we misbehaved in church. :) We were good kids. :)
422 | Why should we pray to Mary? | 1 Tim 2:5 | Norrie | 26703
"Catholics spend too much time in church, too much time in prayer, stress sacraments too much, spend too much time doing good works. Which makes us sound like we're preparing for the biblical equivalent of the eco-challenge. HAhahaha!" "Then they say - all you need is Jesus." "Then the same people want to come along and say Mary distracts us. So which is it? We're doing too much or too little?" I think the point people are trying to make is you do too much that doesn't make a difference instead of focusing on what does. :) Lisa, maybe you aren't lost but there are sooooo many Cath who are, I used to be one, my whole family was too. If you aren't told the plan of salvation the way the Bible lays it out, how are you supposed to know??? You can spend all your time in church, take sacraments, do good works, be an exemplerory person, pray to every saint and Mary for intercession, live on your knees, but if you don't personally know Jesus, it's a waste of time, you're still going to hell. That's the point I believe. |

Assumption??? Isn't that what Mary did into Heaven??? :)
424 | Why should we pray to Mary? | 1 Tim 2:5 | Norrie | 26542
Let's not try splitting too many hairs now. :) If I was devoted to my husband, kids, country, computer, golf game, football team, etc. to the point to where they had place over God, that is still breaking the first commandment. OK, what if my religions thought maybe Abraham was the greatest thing since sliced bread, after all, w/him, the covenant was introduced, God thought he was great enough to pick to make His covenant with and because of him, we get all God's promises, I think I will devote all my time to Abraham-is this right? The answer is NO! Sure, Abraham was a great man, he was the Father of Faith but he is not greater than Jesus-get my point??? |

Why should we pray to Mary? Emmaus said he wanted to start a new thread, here goes. BIBLE ANSWER MAN BROADCAST: Eric Svendsen on the Bible Answer Man. For most of the Protestant world, Mary, the mother of Jesus, remains an enigma. Who is this woman of whom the Scriptures tells us very little? Is she the model of the ideal disciple of Christ, or simply a vessel from which the Savior took His humanity? For the Catholic, there is no equivocation: She is the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven -- the Divine Mediatrix. What is the correct view, and how are we to approach this most intriguing New Testament figure? Be sure to listen to the Bible Answer Man broadcast on Thursday and Friday, December 13 and 14, when author and co-director of New Testament Restoration Ministries, Eric Svendsen joins Hank on the program. They will be taking your calls and discussing Eric's new book, Who Is My Mother?. For more information, click here: http://www.equip.org/special/ |

431 | When did the catholic church go wrong? | Bible general Archive 1 | Norrie | 26013
A little ritual never hurt anybody. :) Shoot, back then, singing all the high masses in Latin was kinda neat, it just didn't sound the same when they changed to English. Of course after that I started HS and that's when the priest said that about Bible competeing w/mythology, he and I went at in out in the hall. :) I never got into the church any more after that, just went because Mama made me go. I was 19 before I told her I'm not going any more and you can't make me. Poor Mama, she had to give up her dream of me being a nun. :)

We had a guy that could really do O Holy Night too, just a kid. We were in the kid choir, I did love that part, we always sang the midnight mass at Cmas. I loved the Holy Saturday mass when they finally got to it after all the saints litany, etc, when the mass actually started, they'd start ringing the bells and we'd sing the Gloria and I loved that part. I always wanted to be an altar boy so I could ring the bells. :) Course Mama had hopes I'd be a nun and my brother a priest. :) We were the first to defect. :)

I just got a handout the other day. Here's what it said: TRADITIONS AND THE YEAR THEY WERE DECREED AD431 Proclamation that infant baptism regenerates the soul. (Baptismal regeneration) AD500 The Mass instituted as a reenactment of the sacrifice of Jesus. (Jesus dies at every mass) AD1000 Attendance at Mass made mandatory under the penalty of mortal sin. AD1215 Transubstantiation, proclaimed by Pope Innocence III and confession of sins to priests, instituted by Pope Innocence III. The bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Christ. Both Elements are worshipped. AD1229 Bible reading forbidden by RCC AD1231 Inquisition begins. ********* I remember then holding that monstance thing up that had the host in it, it looked like a giant sunburst, in high masses the incenmse would be going, it was a really big deal. Anyway, my opinion, how can children be baptized and it take since they haven't consciously made decision to follow Christ? I know when I was 2 wks old, I doubt I made a conscious decision to follow my mama! So if people were bacically being born Christian, what did they have to accept? I know that the whole time I was in RCC, I never once heard the plan of salvation as it truly is. I was going to hell and didn't know it, just thought I was right w/the church. Remember that Chick tract Somebody goofed-that would have been me. |

434 | what is baptism | Bible general Archive 1 | Norrie | 25422
A Bible teacher said today that baptism to the new covenant is the same as what circumcision was in the old covenant, a sign. Baptism is a sign that you are a believer of Jesus. I guess I can really get people started if I mention he said Sat. was the sabbath for old covenant and Sun sabbath for new covenant. :) |

Hi There, Daddy's first cousin is a priest, he was in same city, was over for all major holidays plus inbetween too. Then our church has 2 regular priests plus Springhill College is in town so some of their Jesuits would come there too. Then there were bunches of nuns, they were the main religion teachers. Then in high school there were nuns and priests. It was the priest teaching religion that said bible was just stories to combat mythology. By this time our church happened to have this priest's brother there too. So I'd say I had more than 1 priest's influence. :) I did ask a bunch of Xcath today at Bible study if the Cath did teach the mortal sin/hell and veniel sin/purgatory and they all said yes, that's what they were taught too so... |

We were discussing first century church today in Bible study. Their main focus was on worship and decipleship. Nonbelievers didn't go there, they'd get them saved in marketplaces, then they could come. They usually preformed the Lord's Supper in remembrance of him too. There were only 2 things Jesus taught us to do, pray and how to do Lord's Supper. There are only 2 ordinances he has us do too, Baptism and Lord's Supper. I heard it mentioned today that baptism is the new covenant equivilant of circumcision in the old covenant, it's our sign. The Lord's Supper is done in remembrance of Jesus' death. There was an Xcath lady who asked if there were any rules considering Lord's Supper about fasting, Cath have to fast first. I think they dropped the time limit to a few hours but still there was a fast involved. He explained there are no rules set forth in Bible. Anyway, since Lisa accussed me of making up the junk about if you die w/mortal sin you go to hell and veniel sin gets you purgatory, I asked if that was what the Cath taught and there were many Xcath there who said yes it was what they taught so... |

437 | When did the catholic church go wrong? | Bible general Archive 1 | Norrie | 25678
I read where the RCC didn't actually come into being till Constantine converted around 300AD. I posted an article on The Bones of Peter earlier that was showing how Peter never even made it to Rome anyway. Saw a handout today that said infant baptist was decreed in 431, 500 was when mass was instituted and 1000 was when it became mortal sin not to attend. 1231 was inquisition. I don't have handout in front of me so dates may be a few yrs off but close. :) I know-DUCK!!! I'm fixin to get clobbered!!! |

No, Dear, this is what I was taught in religion class-fact! Our priest also usually made us say 3 Hail Marys for pentence after confession too. I was called a liar before for saying that too because this other person's priest did Our Fathers. I'm stating facts that I grew up with, if you don't like it, I'd tell you go talk to the priests and nuns who taught me but even if you could find them, they're prob all dead anyway. So, don't call me a liar, I'm just parroting them, call them a liar if you want to call anyone one, OK.
