2481 | What is a counted all joy in trials? | James 1:2 | Mommapbs | 199480
Greetings Doc - as I study James and ponder this notion of joy in trials, I'm wondering if we need to look at the little word "it." What does "it" refer to? Might "it" be referencing verse 12 - "Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him." We rejoice because our names are written in Heaven (Luke 10:20);we take joy in knowing that regardless of what we are going through now, our reward is in Heaven (Mt 5:12) - so we can be glad as we wait patiently (endure) here in this life. Is there a connect here? (see also 1 Peter 1:7) Blessings, mommapbs |

2482 | Wisdom - Salvation in Christ? | James 1:5 | Mommapbs | 121048
Might James be addressing unbelievers here? After quite a study on the wisdom of God, it seems possible that the wisdom he notes is referencing salvation. See Job 28: 12-28; Prov 9:10; 1 Cor 1:18-31 and "you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." 2 Tim 3:15 |

2483 | Wisdom - Salvation in Christ? | James 1:5 | Mommapbs | 121079
Greetings EdB! You wrote: "God intends that trials will drive believers to greater dependency on Him, by showing them their own inadequacy." Do you think that God may uses the "trial" that accompanies unconfessed sin in the life of a believer to show them their own inadequacy? Is unbelief a sin that believers struggle with in certain ares of their lives? - (James reminds us that when we ask God for wisdom, we are to ask in faith, not doubting! v6). I think there is much more to the wisdom of God than we understand and as such, we don't even realize that we aren't depending upon it (or in other words, we lack it). Just some thinking . . . 2485 | Wisdom - Salvation in Christ? | James 1:5 | Mommapbs | 121124
Rowdy - God's Word is for everyone, not just believers! Jesus is the Word. Christ died once for ALL! The issue here is God's wisdom vs man who tends to desire to be wise in his own eyes. From all that I have read, Christ is the wisdom of God. Those who desire to please God will exercise faith in WHO He is, what He has done, and what He has promised. (Heb 11:6) mommapbs |

2486 | How does this verse apply to today? | James 1:13 | Mommapbs | 145587
Great post Aixen7z4! Recently I have been engaged in a study about faith and I am convinced that our "trials" are God given opportunities for us to "test our faith" and in doing so, to please God - "for without faith it is impossible to please Him" (Heb 11:6). With this perspective on difficulties, we can "count it all joy when we encounter various trials" (James 1:2-4) When we choose to believe God; to trust Him through the circumstance, we please Him. Giving our our attention to God - His supremacy and His sufficiency - takes the focus off of self and the situation. Oh that we would learn to practice this - what rest and peace we would have in the midst of the storms of life. Blessings to you Nobel! t |

2487 | What is the "perfect law?" | James 1:25 | Mommapbs | 133534
We are told in Romans 6:14 that we are not under the law but under grace. What is the "perfect law, the law of liberty?" How does one "look intently" at this? Does the worldly concept of the word "law" interfere with what God intends for His children? (imo, punishment is the deterrent for would-be law breakers; how does this compare to the perfect law?)
2488 | What is the "perfect law?" | James 1:25 | Mommapbs | 133590
Thanks for this wonderful reply Batunde - I'm wondering how many believers desire to experience this change, to evaluate themselves and others with God's standards rather than their own? Truly, the Word is liberating! Blessings, mommapbs |

2489 | biblical defination of widow/orphan? | James 1:27 | Mommapbs | 199410
Hi Rubygirl - See 1 Timothy 5 for some more spcifics on widows. When I read this verse I am reminded that only Jesus is "pure", "undefiled" and "unstained by the world." I suspect that these terms (widows and orphans in their distress) are used to identify what they need most. This is expressed by what they lack - a husband and an father. These could also be used in contrast to and to emphasize who we are IN Christ - the bride and adopted children. When Christ followers submit to His work in us, we become the conduit of His love as a Bridegroom to the widow and the Everlasting Father to the orphan. Blessings, mommapbs |

2490 | Avoiding paritality in soul care | James 2:1 | Mommapbs | 53190
In James 2 we are admonished not to show partiality in our treatment of others. When we consider "soul care," I'm wondering, do we show partiality when we offer more care and concern for the downtodden as opposed to those who "seem" to have it made? Since when does worldly wealth equal spiritual health? When we look at others of "means," do we see the dollar sign or the soul behind those bars? Comments? |

2491 | Avoiding paritality in soul care | James 2:1 | Mommapbs | 53213
Greetings David! Welcome to the Forum! Yes, Jesus hung out with people from all walks of life; He is our EXAMPLE! However the thrust of my query is that we, as believers, are not following it! Blessings, Mommapbs |

2492 | Avoiding paritality in soul care | James 2:1 | Mommapbs | 53219
Greetings Hank! In a recent experience with the church, the call was placed, pleasantries were exchanged and the pitch for funding a project was thrown without raising any concern or interest in my husband's spiritual walk. I suspect most of us portray an "appearance" of strength as we are naturally resistent to reveal our weaknesses to others. And my husband, like so many, seems to have it all together. But underneath it all, he freely admits that he has issues that need addresssing. He needs someone to tend to his soul too. (I guess that would be me now wouldn't it?) However, the minister,by showing no regard for the state of my husband's soul, focused on his own agenda, and his own "needs." Perhaps the "appearance" of wealth that my husband represented caused the minister to believe that this was "God's means" to fulfill "God's will."(?) This was disappointing and hurtful. Yet God allowed this to happen for His purpose . . . I guess when we place expectations upon others we set ourselves up for this. But is it wrong to expect our pastor to be the overseer of our soul? Blessings, Mommapbs |

2493 | Avoiding paritality in soul care | James 2:1 | Mommapbs | 53240
Thank you for your encouragement 2nd Samuel 22. Ministers who seek to build up the Kingdom must be concerned with proper stewardship of the Saints - their gifts (both spiritual and physical). Sadly, too many of the Beloved fall through the cracks in the church because their gifts are not esteemed. Here is but another example of showing "partiality!" Paul admonishes us to value all parts of the body, for each one is necessary! (1 Cor 12) Blessings, Mommapbs |

2495 | How does mercy triumph over judgment? | James 2:13 | Mommapbs | 133856
When is/was judgment rendered? Since Christ bore the judgment of sin, God's mercy has indeed triumphed. So imo, unless one accepts the mercy of God while it is still "today," the only thing left is God's judgment. How do you see this?
2496 | How does mercy triumph over judgment? | James 2:13 | Mommapbs | 133902
Colin: the cross is a triumph of God’s mercy meant to lead us to repentance so that we may not be judged according to His wrath. mommapbs: AMEN Colin: We are given a choice. We rebel. God entreats us, warns us and wants to show us mercy. If we ignore His entreaties, at some point, bang!, we be lithified. mommapbs: Chapter and verse for the term "lithified" please!! :-) How is God's mercy eternal and His judgment not? Mercy without the possibility of justice isn't mercy is it? God's judgment is a reflection of His nature. God is both merciful and just. He is also unchangeable. Just some thoughts. Blessings, mommapbs |

2498 | Second hand faith is workless! | James 2:14 | Mommapbs | 143937
Is "second hand faith" an example of faith without works? What "work" is missing here? |

2499 | Second hand faith is workless! | James 2:14 | Mommapbs | 143996
Greetings lionheart - an example of second-hand faith is believing what we are "told" or taught to believe without a "testing" or trying of our faith - kind of like going to the gym and just looking at all the equipment but never stepping up to use it. I'm interested in the "works" of this verse and v 17 "Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself." Blessings, mommapbs |

2500 | Second hand faith is workless! | James 2:14 | Mommapbs | 144014
Lionheart - I'd like to delve into this a little more - What about "works?" Most often "fruit pickers and fruit watchers" link works with good deeds that result from a life devoted to God.(I suspect that this attitude can lead to an addiction to service apart from trusting God aka second hand faith). . . But men who are unbelievers also can do "good things." Or can they? (Luke 18:19)See also 1 Cor 3:7-15. If God isn't in the work we will suffer loss. I'd like to suggest that faith, apart from the work(s) of God is dead. Because the word work is plural, I'd like to suggest that this may reference the work of the Trinity. The work of God the Father, the work of God the Son and the work of God the Holy Spirit are the "works" that give life to our faith - for His good pleasure!(Phi 2:13) Faith is a gift from God as well. (Roman 12:3) Eternity has been set in our hearts (Ecc 3:11) so that we are aware of Something more . . . Romans 1 affirms the God-given awareness we have of Him. And all that God calls us to do with the faith He has given us is to choose (Choose this day who you will serve) . . . perhaps our free will is our "work?" If we choose self, faith remains by itself. If we choose God, faith works! God works! "Apart from Me," Jesus said, "You can do nothing!" (John 15 :5)We are God's workmanship, created in Christ unto good works which God has prepared in advance for us to do. (Eph 2:10) This whole faith thing is ALL about God, this whole works thing is ALL about God too. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. God not only gives us the faith, but the Object to place our faith in as well - I suspect that many of us don't understand that the trials and challenges that God allows us to experience are actually opportunities for us to trust Him, to place our faith in Him, to please Him! My 2 cents. Blessings, mommapbs PS: I realize I'll probably incur the wrath of the leadership here for my "speculation" but I do believe that this is worthy of at least consideration. It is all about God and not at all about me. |
