261 | What were the rights of widows? | 1 Tim 5:3 | Makarios | 222109
Greetings Diomede, Perhaps the best passages from Scripture that touch upon the subject of the provision for widows are: Exodus 22:22; Deut. 26:12; The Book of Ruth; 1 Timothy 5:3-16; Mark 12:42-44; Luke 2:36-38 and 21:1-4; and John 19:25-27. As for what a widow could or could not do (expectations as far as the church was concerned), there is no better passage for study than 1 Tim. 5:3-16. It is also highly instructive to review the Gospel accounts: John 19:25-27 showing Jesus providing for Mary, a widow, while dying on the cross. The Book of Ruth is a book about widows: how they lived, what they did, and how they were viewed by society, as well as showing God's provision and ultimate grace. Blessings to you, Makarios |

262 | Hairiest man | Gen 25:25 | Makarios | 221949
Greetings LucyJax, You ask, "Who is the hairiest man known in the Bible?" Both Esau (Genesis 25:25; 27:11) and Elijah (2 Kings 1:8) were hairy, but Esau even had hair on his hands (Genesis 27:23). Therefore, Esau gets my vote as 'hairiest man in the Bible.' Blessings to you, Makarios |

265 | Did Jesus argue/dispute with anyone? | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 221618
Greetings Quizzy, You ask, "Did Jesus ever argue/dispute with anyone? Did any man righteously in the bible argue/dispute with anyone?" This sounds like a Homework question. This forum is not intended nor designed for such a purpose as helping people with such questions - you are much better served by reading the Gospels and finding the answers you need on your own. 266 | Does God approve of race marriage. | 1 Corinthians | Makarios | 221601
Greetings GaryMcC! I believe that the Bible supports interracial marriage as long as both the man and the woman are believers (1 Cor. 7:10-17). Blessings to you, Makarios |

268 | no death b4 adam what hap to dinosaurs? | Rom 5:12 | Makarios | 221497
Greetings Pop2nljj, You ask, "If there was no death before Adam what happened to the dinosaurs?" According to Romans 5:12, death did not even enter the world until after Adam's sin. And the fossil record, more than anything else, is a record of death. The very nature of fossilization thus seems to require catastrophism. There was death on a worldwide scale (Genesis 7:23). At the end of creation (Genesis 1:31), God pronounced everything as "very good." Therefore, the "record of death" (see Romans 8:22), or the fossil record, must be dated Biblically as occurring after man's sin and God's curse on man's dominion (Genesis 3:15). The great worldwide catastrophe was the great Flood, when every living thing was destroyed (Genesis 7:23). Every living thing that was not in Noah's ark, including the dinosaurs, died in the Flood. The Bible does provide arguable clues towards a contemporaneous existence between that of humans and dinosaurs (see Job 41:1; Psalm 74:14, 104:26; Isaiah 27:1). Therefore, instead of a long, geologic evolution of life over time, the Bible is rather pointing to its polar opposite - the rapid extinction of life as a result of God's judgment (see 2 Peter 3:6). As for the disappearance of the dinosaurs, perhaps that also would be evidence pointing to the curse on mankind, since the plants started to change, producing thorns and thistles (Genesis 3:18), and mankind itself was tending much more towards being carnivorous (Genesis 9:3-4). Blessings to you, Makarios |

269 | Biblical basis for pro-life initiatives? | Genesis | Makarios | 220753
Greetings Arundel! In 1996, I personally participated in that very same annual Pro-Life "Walk for Life" in Washington, D.C., that went all the way from the National Mall to the gates of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! When I participated, I witnessed a large participation from both Catholics and Evangelicals. But even if things are not as polarized politically today as they were back then, I believe that this is an important issue that believers should still be involved in. As for Bible verses to support pro-life initiatives, there are quite a few. Scripture is clear that everything God has created reproduces after its own kind (Genesis 1:21,24) and human beings are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). This means that at the moment of conception, what is in the womb is truly human. Scripture supports that the baby in the womb is a human being (Psalm 51:5; 139:13-15; Jeremiah 1:5; Exodus 21:22-24). Obviously, the time of birth and the fact that the baby is out of the womb does not change the fact that a baby's essential nature is that of a human being. Also, scripture teaches that a person born with a physical deformity may end up glorifying God in a great way - see the blind man of John 9 of which Jesus said, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life" (John 9:3). Also, one cannot justify that abortion is acceptable in the case of rape. While rape is a terrible sin, two wrongs never make a right. We also have a body and soul, both of which are marvelous creations of God (see 1 Thess. 5:23 and Heb. 4:12). Scripture also says that God "formed the spirit of man within him" (Zechariah 12:1; Isaiah 42:5; Psalm 139:14-16). We know that these components of body, soul and spirit have to be given by God before a person is born. There is no doubt that the Bible points to a baby's consciousness - Jacob and Esau "struggled together" before they were born (Genesis 25:22,23) and John the Baptist "leaped" in Elizabeth's womb (Luke 1:41,44) when Mary arrived. In fact, Ecclesiastes 11:5 arguably points to divine authentication of prenatal consciousness. Pregnancy has been an answer to prayer (Genesis 25:21; 1 Samuel 1:11), and a pregnant woman had rights under the law (Exodus 21:22). The Bible speaks of protecting the child by avoiding alcohol (Judges 13:2-4) and God knows the time of birth (Psalm 22:9; Isaiah 66:9). The fetus is in God's care (Isaiah 44:2). Childbirth is a joy! (John 16:21) Blessings to you, Makarios |

Greetings Lightedsteps and Wejlly, According to www.blueletterbible.org, the Greek (Strongs #G4469) appears only once in the NT, here in Matthew 5:22, but the OT comparison (H7386) appears 14 times: Genesis 37:24, 41:27; Deut. 32:47; Judges 7:16, 9:4, 11:3; 2 Sam. 6:20; 2 Kings 4:3; 2 Chr. 13:7; Nehemiah 5:13; Prov. 12:11, 28:19; Isaiah 29:8; Ezekiel 24:11. 271 | Luke 16:18 | Luke 16:18 | Makarios | 220585
Greetings Aileen, Perhaps a bit of context about this passage will help explain. In Luke 16:18, Jesus is speaking to the worldly minded Pharisees, who while professing to be guardians of the Law, ignored the teachings of the Law about divorce, allowing it for any trivial cause. But Luke only stresses the main issue while Matthew (5:31-32; 19:3-9) expands more fully on the topic of divorce; making clear that Jesus permitted divorce in cases of 'unchastity' (Matt. 5:32, NASB). I believe that Jesus forgives divorce (John 4:17-19) even though the consequences of divorce remain and are a great hurt for people, families and the church at large. Blessings to you, Makarios |

272 | David's age when anointed by Samuel? | 1 Sam 16:13 | Makarios | 220583
Greetings Casb40, David could not have been too old as he was the youngest (1 Samuel 16:11-12; 1 Chronicles 2:13-15). One such reason why Samuel somewhat secretly anointed David to be king before his family and house first was for David's protection and to train him for the office that he would eventually hold - King of Israel. David would then be noticed by Saul as a musician and later be his armor bearer, making David an associate of the king and his inner circle. God directed the events of David's life and would shape his path as His chosen King, and God starting doing this with David at an early age. Blessings to you, Makarios |

273 | What is the theme of 1 Timothy? | 1 Tim 3:14 | Makarios | 220548
Greetings Yannah, The theme or purpose of 1 Timothy can be summed up in the following two verses: 1 Timothy 3:14-15 "I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long; but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth." (NASB) 1 Timothy could be broken down as follows: Chapter 1 - Instructions for False Doctrine Chapter 2 - Instructions for Worship Chapter 3 - Instructions for Church Leaders Chapter 4 - Instructions for false teaching Chapters 5 and 6 - Instructions for various duties Paul gave very practical and insightful instructions to the support and ministry of the Gospel in Ephesus. Paul charges Timothy (6:13-16) to preach the true Gospel without stain or reproach in the wake of false doctrine which was already a threat to the faith. Blessings to you, Makarios |

278 | what if you get excommunicated? | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 220346
Greetings Vnct Blzn, Perhaps the best clue for an answer to your question is the word "knowingly." If the other church knows about and has recognized the reasons for your excommunication but still does not hold it against you (and can do so Biblically), then I would assume that you would be a full member of the new congregation. But even if they accept you, there is still that matter with the other church that would seem to still be unresolved/unforgiven. Blessings to you, Makarios |
